#MeToo? Het verband tussen pornografiegebruik enerzijds en genderstereotypen, de acceptatie van verkrachtingsmythes en een negatieve attitude tegenover de #MeToo beweging bij Vlaamse adolescenten anderzijds.

#Metoo?Hoe pornografiegebruik de steun aan de metoo-beweging bij Vlaamse adolescenten doet dalen.

“Women are being believed for the first time ever”. Deze lovende woorden komen uit de kritische mond van vrouwenrechten activiste Gloria Steinem die het heeft over de metoo- beweging. Een golf in beweging gebracht na de klachten van 85 vrouwen tegen één van Hollywood’s succesvolste producenten, Harvey Weinsten. Zij beschuldigden hem namelijk allemaal van seksuele intimidatie op de werkvloer. En dit was slechts het begin. 

Algauw deelden miljoenen vrouwen hun ervaringen met seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag via de hashtage #metoo op sociale media. Zo namen ze de controle terug over hun eigen ervaringen en lichamen. Voor het eerst werd het verhaal van de vrouw niet gedomineerd door het perspectief van de man. Als deze beweging 60 jaar eerder had plaatsvonden had Simone de Beauvoir, de moeder van het feminisme (en niet enkel levensgezel van Sartre), het geprezen voor de manier waarop de vrouw zich in de rol van het ‘subject’ en niet het ‘object’ plaatst. Ook mannen reageerden op deze hashtags en deelden gelijkaardige ervaringen, anderen erkenden dan zelf hun wangedrag met de #Ihave. De hashtag werd het symbool voor de discussies omtrent de heersende verkrachtingsmythes en, bijgevolg, victim blaming in de huidige maatschappij. Fenomenen die onder andere juridisch zware gevolgen voor het slachtoffer kunnen hebben. Victim blaming en verkrachtingsmythes kunnen er namelijk toe leiden dat bepaalde verkrachtingszaken afgewezen worden omdat de schuld niet bij de dader maar het slachtoffer wordt gelegd. Een recent voorbeeld hiervan zijn de controversiële uitspraken van een Spaanse rechter over een verkrachting die had plaatsgevonden in 2016. In deze zaak hadden vijf mannen een 18- jarige vrouw verkracht en dit gefilmd, maar de rechter oordeelde dat dit niet om een effectieve verkrachting ging aangezien de vrouw zich niet voldoende had verdedigd. Hierdoor werden de daders vrijgesproken van hun misdaad en werd de verantwoordelijkheid bij het slachtoffer gelegd. 

Het onderzoek

Hoe staan Vlaamse adolescenten tegenover de metoo-beweging? Vinden ze dat deze vrouwen overdrijven of moedigen ze dit soort sociale veranderingen net aan? Het onderzoek legt hier dus , onder andere, de focus op de beoordeling van deze metoo-beweging en brengt dit in verband met het pornografiegebruik van de Vlaamse adolescenten. Een negatieve beoordeling van de beweging wordt namelijk gezien als een tijdsspecifieke uiting van seksuele genderstereotypen en verkrachtingsmythes. Het onderzoek ging ervan uit dat adolescenten die meer pornografie bekijken, ook meer die genderstereotiepe attitudes koesteren, verkrachtingsmythes aanvaarden en negatief staan tegenover de metoo-beweging. Dit omwille van de inhouden waaraan de adolescenten worden blootgesteld wanneer ze pornografie consumeren. Het zijn namelijk vooral inhouden waarin de vrouw onderdanig is, geobjectiveerd wordt en dus, kortom, voldoet aan de genderstereotypen. Seksueel onervaren adolescenten kunnen deze verhaallijnen gebruiken als leidraad voor hun eigen (seksuele) leven en attitudes. 

Resultaten

Over het algemeen staat de Vlaamse adolescent positief tegenover de beweging. Ze gaven bijvoorbeeld aan dat ze de slachtoffers, die hun verhaal deelden, moedig vinden. Maar wanneer dit in verband werd gebracht met hun pornografiegebruik bleek dat de beoordeling van het debat negatiever werd. De veronderstelling van het onderzoek werd dus bevestigd: de blootstelling aan seksueel geobjectiveerde vrouwen in pornografie doet de steun aan een feministische beweging zoals de #metoo, dalen. Ook bleek dat deze daling loopt via twee andere ideeën, namelijk het koesteren van genderstereotype attitudes en het aanvaarden van verkrachtingsmythes. Opvallend is dat deze daling hetzelfde was bij zowel jongens als meisjes. Meisjes verzetten zich dus niet meer dan jongens tegen deze negatieve beoordeling van de feministische beweging. 

Deze resultaten zijn van maatschappelijk en communicatiewetenschappelijk belang. Nog nooit eerder werd het metoo debat onderzocht in het communicatiewetenschappelijk domein en werden inzichten verworven over de houding van Vlaamse adolescenten tegenover deze beweging. Het geeft ons een indruk over hoe pornografiegebruik gekoppeld kan worden aan de manier waarop adolescenten denken over de man-vrouw relatie in de huidige maatschappij. Het is van groot belang dat hieruit geleerd wordt en dat adolescenten, maar ook volwassenen, stilstaan bij de impact van hun pornografiegebruik. Dit kan, onder andere, door dit bespreekbaar te maken in seksuele opvoedingslessen en hierbij de juiste cijfers te gebruiken. Adolescenten en volwassenen hebben geen baat bij informatie van sensatiezoekers of personen die enkel spreken over de meest extreme gevallen. Het consumeren van pornografie maakt je niet onmiddellijk de grootste seksist of vrouwenhater, pornografie kan je inspireren, doen fantaseren of bijleren over de menselijke anatomie… als je het op een kritische manier gebruikt. Houd in het achterhoofd dat de blootstelling aan deze specifieke objectiveringen en genderstereotypen in deze specifieke inhouden slechts een klein deel zijn van een groot geheel aan blootstellingen en invloeden. En houd in het achterhoofd dat het deze kleine, onopvallende invloeden misschien wel deze gedachte in uw hoofd kan oproepen de volgende keer dat leest een verkrachtingszaak in uw krant:“Pffff, die overdrijft zeg”
