De man is een jager, de vrouw is zijn prooi. Pornografiegebruik en seksuele genderstereotypering bij jongeren
Ongeveer 42% van de surfers bekijkt wel eens pornografische beelden op het internet. Op het eerste zicht misschien een onschuldige bezigheid, maar toch kan dit rekenen op heel wat kritiek. Één van de grootste bezorgdheden is dat zich onder deze surfers ook een groot deel jongeren bevinden. De vrees bestaat dat zij uit deze beelden wel eens een vertekend beeld over seksualiteit kunnen krijgen.
Adolescenten, oftewel jongeren tussen 10 en 18 jaar oud, beginnen rond de leeftijd van 14 jaar kennis te maken met seksualiteit. Ze verkennen hun eigen lichaam, ontdekken wat ze plezierig vinden en bovenal hoe ze zich dienen te gedragen ten opzichte van anderen. Voor dit laatste halen jongeren voornamelijk kennis uit interacties met vrienden en wat ze zien in de media. Onder vrienden worden ervaringen en denkbeelden gedeeld. In de media kan via beelden rechtstreeks afgeleid worden wat de heersende normen zijn in de maatschappij. De media, en in het bijzonder pornografie, geven echter een nogal genderstereotiepe afbeelding van seksualiteit. Zo moet de man bijvoorbeeld dominant zijn en op vrouwen jagen, terwijl de vrouw vooral onderdanig moet zijn en er sexy uitzien. Naast genderstereotiep, zijn deze beelden ook objectiverend ten opzichte van vrouwen. Dit wil zeggen dat er enkel gefocust wordt op het lichaam van de vrouw. Zulke beelden weerspiegelen duidelijk niet hoe het er in de werkelijkheid aan toe zou moeten gaan. De vraag reist daarom of jongeren die meer pornografie kijken er ook een meer genderstereotiepe denkwijze op nahouden.
Pornografie en seksuele genderstereotiepe attitudes
Wat zijn seksuele genderstereotiepe attitudes nu eigenlijk en worden ze aangewakkerd door blootstelling aan pornografie? Seksuele genderstereotiepe attitudes zijn de denkbeelden over hoe mannen en vrouwen zich moeten gedragen in seksuele relaties. Over het algemeen wordt aangenomen dat de man de rol van dominante jager op zich moet nemen. Ze moeten het voortouw nemen en zijn vooral gericht op kortstondige seksuele interacties met vrouwen. Vrouwen daarentegen moeten zich vooral onderdanig opstellen. Ze spelen met hun uiterlijk om een man te kunnen verleiden en zijn bovendien gericht op langdurige, romantische relaties. Ze zien seksuele interacties als een uiting van liefde.
Een hoger pornografiegebruik blijkt over het algemeen niet in verband te staan met meer genderstereotiepe attitudes. Opvallend is echter wel dat als jongens en meisjes apart onder de loep worden genomen, er bij jongens wel een verband wordt vastgesteld. Jongens met een hoger pornografiegebruik vertonen dus meer genderstereotiepe attitudes. Bij meisjes is dit niet het geval. Niet enkel de verschillen in geslacht, maar ook die in opleidingsniveau werden onderzocht. Zo blijkt dat er geen verschil bestaat tussen leerlingen uit het BSO en leerlingen uit het ASO op vlak van genderstereotypering bij een hoger pornografiegebruik.
Pornografie en objectivering van vrouwen
In pornografie wordt er niet enkel genderstereotiep gedacht, ook worden vrouwen erg geobjectiveerd. Maar wat is objectivering nu juist? Het objectiveren van vrouwen wil zeggen dat er sterk gefocust wordt op het lichaam van de vrouw. Zij wordt hierbij enkel gebruikt als een middel om de seksuele behoeften van mannen te bevredigen.
In tegenstelling tot genderstereotiepe attitudes, valt er bij een hoger pornografiegebruik wel een hogere mate van seksuele objectivering ten opzichte van vrouwen op te merken. Deze bevinding verschilt niet tussen jongens en meisjes, wat wilt zeggen dat zowel jongens als meisjes die meer pornografie bekijken vrouwen ook meer objectiveren. Opleidingsniveau blijkt ook hier, net zoals bij seksuele genderstereotiepe attitudes, geen rol te spelen. Leerlingen uit een lager opleidingsniveau zullen dus bij een hoger pornografiegebruik niet meer objectivering tegenover vrouwen vertonen dan leerlingen uit een hoger opleidingsniveau.
De rol van vrienden
Ten slotte speelt niet enkel pornografie, maar ook de mening van vrienden een rol in denkbeelden over seksualiteit. Jongeren delen ervaringen onder elkaar en nemen daarom ook gedragingen van elkaar over. Zo blijkt dat ook de perceptie van genderstereotiepe attitudes bij vrienden in verband staat met de eigen seksuele genderstereotiepe attitudes. Adolescenten waarvan de peers dus genderstereotiep denken, zullen zelf ook een hoge mate van seksuele genderstereotypering vertonen. Hoewel dezelfde denkbeelden gedeeld worden, is het niet zo dat genderstereotiepe attitudes van vrienden een rol speelt in het verband tussen pornografiegebruik en genderstereotypering. Adolescenten die denken dat hun vrienden hoog scoren op genderstereotypering, zullen dus niet meer genderstereotiepe attitudes vertonen bij een hoog pornografiegebruik dan adolescenten die denken dat hun vrienden laag scoren op genderstereotypering.
Conclusie
Kort samengevat vertonen adolescente jongens met een hoog pornografiegebruik ook meer genderstereotiepe attitudes, meisjes niet. Daarnaast vertonen adolescenten die pornografie consumeren ook meer objectivering ten opzichte van vrouwen. Niet enkel media zijn belangrijk. Adolescenten die genderstereotiepe denkbeelden waarnemen bij hun peers, zullen zelf ook sterkere stereotiepe attitudes vertonen. De genderstereotiepe attitudes van peers spelen echter geen rol in het verband tussen pornografiegebruik en seksuele genderstereotypering.
De uitkomsten van deze masterproef geven meer inzicht in de rol van pornografie op seksuele attitudes. Hoewel de verbanden die gevonden werden klein zijn, is het toch belangrijk om jongeren kritisch te leren omgaan met dit soort beelden. De ouders en de school kunnen adolescenten mogelijk sensibiliseren in het omgaan met pornografie, zodat mogelijk negatieve effecten van genderstereotypering gereduceerd kunnen worden.
