Virtual reality als hulpmiddel om een fietsvriendelijke stad te creëren

Lang zullen we leven

Hoe vaak wensen we elkaar een goede gezondheid bij een verjaardag of een jaarwisseling? Droom jij er ook van om gezond oud te worden?

Het waarmaken van deze wens vormt een belangrijke uitdaging in onze vergrijzende maatschappij. De stijgende levensverwachting gaat gepaard met een toename van chronische aandoeningen zoals hart- en vaatziekten. Naast de persoonlijke impact op de levenskwaliteit creëert dit een grote druk op ons gezondheidszorgsysteem. Een actieve levensstijl kan bijdragen tot gezond oud worden. De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie beveelt 65-plussers aan minstens 150 minuten per week te bewegen met een matige intensiteit zoals wandelen of fietsen. Bij lichaamsbeweging met een hoge intensiteit -bijvoorbeeld joggen of spitten- volstaan 75 minuten per week. Ondanks de voordelen beweegt minder dan de helft van de Vlaamse 65-plussers voldoende. Meteen rijst de vraag: hoe kunnen ouderen gestimuleerd worden om meer te bewegen?

Alle ouderen de fiets op

Ouderen kunnen zich een gezondere levensstijl eigen maken door hun verplaatsingen op een actieve manier te doen: te voet of met de (elektrische) fiets. Beiden zijn door ouderen gemakkelijk te implementeren in hun dagelijkse gewoontes zoals het doen van boodschappen. Aangezien fietsen een hogere intensiteit vereist dan wandelen, is het aannemelijk dat de gezondheidsvoordelen van fietsen groter zijn. Zo heeft fietsen een gunstige invloed op het gewicht, het cognitief functioneren en de mentale gezondheid. Actieve ouderen zouden daarnaast een groter netwerk behouden en minder snel sociaal geïsoleerd raken. Bovendien blijft koning auto thuis waardoor brandstofkosten uitgespaard en lucht- en geluidsvervuiling gereduceerd worden. Er is nog ruimte om fietsen als actief transport bij ouderen te promoten. Hoewel de helft van de verplaatsingen die 65-plussers afleggen korter is dan drie kilometer, gebeurt slechts één op drie verplaatsingen op actieve wijze.

Impact van de omgeving

Wat maakt dat iemand kiest voor de auto of fiets? Enerzijds wordt ons gedrag beïnvloed door persoonsgebonden factoren. Zo moet men bijvoorbeeld over de vaardigheden beschikken om te fietsen. Anderzijds spelen omgevingsfactoren een belangrijke rol. Een beleid dat fietsen promoot, bijvoorbeeld aan de hand van fiscale voordelen, kan het fietsgedrag beïnvloeden.

Om actief transport bij 65-plussers te bevorderen is het onder meer nodig een aantrekkelijke en veilige fietsomgeving te creëren. De macro-omgeving omvat structurele kenmerken zoals de stratenconnectiviteit. Met andere woorden: hoe gemakkelijk kan men zich verplaatsen van punt A naar punt B? Wijzigingen aanbrengen in het stratenpatroon van een stad is vaak zeer moeilijk en duur. Daarentegen zijn aanpassingen in de micro-omgeving vaak goedkoper en gemakkelijker waar te maken. De micro-omgeving kan gezien worden als specifieke straatkenmerken zoals de staat van het wegdek, de aanwezigheid van groen en afval in het straatbeeld. Onderzoek naar straatkenmerken die een gunstige invloed hebben op het fietsgedrag is reeds gebeurd. Aan de hand van foto’s (2D) moesten de participanten straatkenmerken beoordelen. 

VR: een goed idee?

De huidige technologie laat toe verschillende omgevingen te simuleren in 3D. In vergelijking tot onderzoek via foto’s, maakt 3D interactie tussen de gebruiker en de virtuele omgeving mogelijk en wordt de realiteit sterker benaderd. Zo is de impact van de omgeving op het fietsgedrag meer accuraat te bestuderen. Binnen ons onderzoek, in samenwerking met stad Gent, werden twee toepassingen van virtuele realiteit met elkaar vergeleken: enerzijds een VR-bril en anderzijds een 3D-CAVE. Bij een 3D-CAVE doen drie wanden, opgesteld rondom de proefpersoon, dienst als projectiescherm van de virtuele omgeving. Beide toepassingen proberen de indruk te wekken dat de gebruiker zich in de gesimuleerde realiteit bevindt. Welke toepassing is het meest geschikt om de invloed van straatkenmerken te onderzoeken?

Om beide toepassingen te vergelijken, evalueren we hun presence. Presence is de mate waarin men ervaart deel uit te maken van een bepaalde virtuele omgeving, hoewel men fysiek in een andere omgeving aanwezig is. Wanneer het bewustzijn zich voornamelijk focust op de virtuele omgeving en in mindere mate op de reële ruimte waarin men zich bevindt, is er sprake van een hoge mate van presence. De toepassing waarbij de proefpersonen een hogere mate van presence ervaren, kan in de toekomst gebruikt worden om verder onderzoek te doen naar de invloed van verschillende omgevingsfactoren op het fietsgedrag. 

Concreet maakten alle proefpersonen gebruik van beide toepassingen in willekeurige volgorde. Dit wil zeggen dat sommige ouderen tijdens de eerste test gebruik maakten van de VR-bril en anderen van de 3D-CAVE. Bij de tweede test kregen ze de andere toepassing toegewezen. Tijdens beide testen fietsten ze door middel van een fiets op rollen doorheen drie virtuele Gentse straten. Na iedere fietsproef werd een vragenlijst afgenomen waaruit de mate van presence werd bepaald. Ruim honderd 65-plussers namen deel aan het experiment.

Wat blijkt uit de resultaten? De mate van presence is hoger gebruikmakend van de VR-bril in vergelijking met de 3D-CAVE. Opvallend is echter dat ouderen een hogere mate van presence ervaren bij hun tweede test. Wanneer participant A eerst gebruik maakte van de VR-bril en nadien van de 3D-CAVE, ervaarde hij of zij een grotere mate van presence bij de 3D-CAVE. Omgekeerd, wanneer participant B eerst gebruik maakte van de 3D-CAVE en nadien van de VR-bril, ervaarde hij of zij een grotere mate van presence bij de VR-bril.

Daarnaast bleek de mate van presence negatief beïnvloed te worden door simulator sickness. Dit zijn symptomen die de VR-gebruiker kan ervaren zoals duizeligheid, overmatig zweten of braken. Hoe meer men deze symptomen ervaart, hoe lager de mate van presence.

Louter rekening houdend met de mate van presence kan de VR-bril met enige voorzichtigheid aangeraden worden. Verder kunnen we besluiten dat een gewenningsperiode aan de 3D-omgeving een positieve invloed heeft. Naast de mate van presence moeten ook andere factoren in rekening gebracht worden bij het adviseren van een VR-toepassing. Simulator sickness en/of de persoonlijke voorkeur van de participant kunnen tevens doorslaggevende argumenten zijn. Het is bovendien aangewezen in de toekomst te onderzoeken hoe simulator sickness beperkt kan worden. Zo kan toekomstig onderzoek naar de straatkenmerken beter uitgevoerd worden. 

Stap per stap wordt de droom om gezond ouder te worden in een veilige en fietsvriendelijke stad misschien werkelijkheid!
