Cohabitatie als alternatief voor het huwelijk
Tot nog toe leek er in Vlaanderen geen verschil in relatiekwaliteit te bestaan tussen gehuwden en samenwonenden. Dit is merkwaardig aangezien deze “cohabitation gap” wel bestaat in buurlanden.
Dit onderzoek heeft als doel dit opnieuw na te gaan en wijkt van voorgaand onderzoek af door de groep samenwonenden als een heterogene groep te beschouwen. Voorheen werden de samenwonenden als één groep ten opzichte van de gehuwden geanalyseerd. Dit gaat voorbij aan de verschillende motivaties en fases in de samenwoning. Partners kunnen cohabitatie als een test voor het huwelijk zien en als deze test succesvol is, trouwplannen maken. Daarnaast zijn er ook nog de samenwonenden die geen intentie om te trouwen hebben en het dus als een alternatief op het huwelijk zien.
In navolging van buitenlands onderzoek komen er verschillen in relatiekwaliteit van gehuwden met samenwonenden aan het licht wanneer de groep met trouwplannen onderscheiden wordt van de samenwonenden zonder. Samenwonenden met trouwplannen vertonen immers een vergelijkbare relatiekwaliteit als gehuwden. Maar ook de opdeling volgens huwelijkswens van de samenwonenden zonder trouwplannen blijkt nuttig.
Zo komen er verschillen in partnervoorkeuren en progressiviteit aan het licht van deze groeiende groep samenwonenden. Dit ondersteunt de stelling dat er twee motivaties zijn om te cohabiteren en gedateerde theorieën over succesvolle matches met bijhorende verklaringen van relatiekwaliteit niet zomaar voor alle samenwonenden gelden. Cohabitatie als test voor het huwelijk laat zich vooral door het traditionele socio-economisch perspectief verklaren en cohabitatie als alternatief voor het huwelijk laat dat vooral doen door het perspectief van de Tweede Demografische Transitie.
