Donkere wolken tijdens het ouderschap: over de rol van parentificatie, motivatie en ouderlijke identiteit bij ouderlijke burn-out

HELP! IK BEN OP ALS OUDER! Het belang van identiteit en motivatie in de strijd tegen ouderlijke burn-out.

Voel jij je ook soms uitgeput als ouder? Is het ouderschap je soms allemaal wat teveel? Je bent niet alleen! 

In een recente studie naar gevoelens van ouderlijke burn-out bij Vlaamse ouders kwam naar voor dat 1 op de 3 ouders wel eens worstelt met deze gevoelens. 1 op de 20 ervaart ze wekelijks en 1 op de 25 zelfs dagelijks.

Ben je uitgeput door de taken en verantwoordelijkheden die bij je rol als ouder horen? Voel je je niet meer verbonden met je kinderen? Heb je het gevoel geen goede ouder te zijn? Deze kenmerken wijzen op de aanwezigheid van ouderlijke burn-out. Het ontstaat na een langdurige blootstelling aan ouderlijke stress.

Welke ouders hebben een verhoogd risico voor een ouderlijke burn-out? Wat kan ons beschermen? Wij vonden 472 Vlaamse ouders (waarvan 53,6% moeders) bereidt om een online vragenlijst in te vullen. Zij kregen vragen voorgeschoteld over de identiteit als ouder, de motivatie voor het ouderschap en de eigen kindervaringen.

 

Onderschat het belang van kindervaringen niet.

 

Kunnen je ervaringen als kind ervoor zorgen dat je later als ouder een groter risico hebt om gevoelens van ouderlijke burn-out te ervaren? In ons onderzoek werden ervaringen van parentificatie bevraagd. Parentificatie doet zich voor wanneer kinderen één of meerdere taken vervullen die eigenlijk de ouder toebehoren, zoals het zorgen voor de ouder of het creëren van goede levensomstandigheden. Een kind kan uiteraard voldoening vinden in het helpen of ondersteunen van de ouders, maar wanneer dit verandert in een langdurige en structurele ondersteuning kan de ontwikkeling, op korte én lange termijn, ernstig verstoord worden.

Deze kinderen verliezen het vertrouwen in zichzelf en ervaren een overweldigende stress die gepaard gaat met onzekerheid en angst. Later kan het leiden tot emotionele en/of fysieke uitputting in het ouderschap. Uit ons onderzoek bleek dat ouders die meer ervaringen van parentificatie rapporteerden ook meer gevoelens van ouderlijke burn-out ervoeren. Het is dus belangrijk om toekomstige ouders met een verleden van parentificatie op te volgen in hun overgang naar het ouderschap.

 

Echter ervaart niet elke ouder met een verleden van parentificatie deze gevoelens van ouderlijke burn-out. In ons onderzoek gingen we op zoek naar de rol van identiteit en motivatie hierin.

 

Wie ben ik als ouder?

 

Tijdens ons leven nemen we verschillende identiteiten aan, zoals de identiteit als partner, als werknemer, maar ook als ouder. Een identiteit is een beeld dat we van onszelf hebben. Het is belangrijk dat we ons verbinden met onze identiteit en dit wordt het best voorafgegaan door een fase van exploratie. Sommige mensen komen vast te zitten in dit exploratieproces en hierdoor ontstaat een blijvend gepieker. Dan wordt er gesproken van piekerende of ruminatieve exploratie. Uit de resultaten van ons onderzoek bleek dat ouders die aangaven meer te twijfelen over hun ouderlijke rol ook meer gevoelens van ouderlijke burn-out rapporteerden.

Eerder onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat de onzekerheden en angsten die geparentificeerde ouders in hun kinderjaren ervoeren zich kunnen doorzetten in de rol die ze als ouder opnemen. Dit werd in ons onderzoek bevestigd. Ouders met een voorgeschiedenis van parentificatie exploreren wel, maar ze komen vast te zitten in dit exploratieproces. Hoewel ze zich lijken te binden met hun identiteit als ouder blijven ze ook twijfelen en in tweestrijd verkeren over hun ouderschap.

 

Kies voor het ouderschap omdat je dat zelf wilt!

 

Waarom kies je ervoor om moeder of vader te worden? De verschillende motieven die mensen hiervoor hebben, kunnen opgedeeld worden in autonome en gecontroleerde motieven. Autonome motivatie ontstaat wanneer je kiest om moeder of vader te worden omdat je dit leuk en waardevol vindt in je leven. Wanneer de verwachtingen van anderen een belangrijke rol spelen in de keuze om moeder of vader te worden, is er sprake van gecontroleerde motivatie. In ons onderzoek bleek autonome motivatie een beschermende factor voor ouderlijke burn-out terwijl gecontroleerde motivatie een risicofactor was. Ouders die hoog scoorden op gecontroleerde motivatie ervoeren namelijk meer gevoelens van ouderlijke burn-out. De ouders die daarentegen hoog scoorden op autonome motivatie ervoeren net minder gevoelens van ouderlijke burn-out.

Hoe zit het met ouders die in hun kindertijd parentificatie ervoeren? Deze ouders nemen de ouderrol voor een deel op omwille van vrijwillige redenen, maar ook voor een deel omdat het moet. Ze lijken dus opnieuw dubbel te staan tegenover het ouderschap en heen en weer geslingerd te zijn tussen positieve en negatieve gevoelens.

 

Voorkomen is beter dan genezen

 

De reden waarom ouders met een verleden van parentificatie gevoeliger zijn voor burn-out is omdat ze meer twijfelen over hun rol als ouder en ook meer druk ervaren om deze rol op te nemen. Net zoals deze ouders in hun gezin van oorsprong wellicht onduidelijkheid ervoeren over hun rol in het gezin en ook druk ervoeren om taken op zich te nemen waarvoor ze niet klaar waren, ervaren ze nu in hun eigen gezin ook rolverwarring en een gevoel van verplichting om hun eigen kind(eren) te helpen.

 

In ons onderzoek werd bewust aandacht besteed aan veranderbare factoren, namelijk ouderlijke identiteitsontwikkeling en motivatie voor het ouderschap. De resultaten van dit onderzoek bieden handvatten voor preventie en interventie van ouderlijke burn-out. Zo is het belangrijk om ouders met twijfels over hun rol als ouder te begeleiden. Het is in de huidige samenleving vaak niet makkelijk om twijfels over het ouderschap te uiten. Hieraan meer aandacht besteden en openheid rond creëren is een eerste stap richting preventie. Daarnaast is het als ouder ook belangrijk om stil te staan bij de redenen die je hebt om voor het ouderschap te kiezen. Is het een vrijwillige keuze omdat je het zelf belangrijk en waardevol vindt in je leven? Of omdat je je meer onder druk gezet voelt door je omgeving of de maatschappij?

Het ouderschap kan voldoening geven, maar kan ook uitputtend zijn. Ouders bij wie de balans te veel en te lang uit evenwicht is, verdienen de nodige aandacht.

Niet alleen de mentale gezondheid van je kinderen is belangrijk. Ook die van jou als ouder telt!
