Love at second sight: The impact of addressing the secondhand luxury market as a luxury brand on desirability and brand attitudes

Goed nieuws voor de modeliefhebber én het klimaat. Luxemerken die ook tweedehands artikelen van hun merk verkopen blijken erg goed in de smaak te vallen bij het modepubliek. Lang vreesden luxemerken dat klanten hen hierdoor als minder exclusief zouden aanzien, maar niets is minder waar.

Het nieuws slaat ons om de oren dat klimaatverandering ons weldra de das om zal doen. De grafieken staan in het rood, het regent klimaatakkoorden en de jeugd komt op straat. Het is vijf na twaalf, maar bij velen heerst de vraag ‘Wat kan ik daar zelf aan doen?’.

Om deze vraag te beantwoorden keek deze studie simpelweg naar de kleding die we dragen. De mode-industrie is een van de meest vervuilende ter wereld, dus hier valt nog het één en ander goed te maken. Het stemmetje in ons achterhoofd zegt ons dat fast fashion al helemaal op de onderste trede van de duurzaamheidsladder staat, maar wat zijn de andere opties? Honderden, misschien wel duizenden euro's neertellen voor een luxemerk? Dat is voor veel mensen simpelweg geen optie. En daarbij, zijn die blinkende luxemerken dan zoveel beter? De oplossing hiervoor is het kopen van tweedehands luxemode. Op vlak van prijs-kwaliteit is het een geweldige deal en er is niets duurzamer dan stuks kopen die zich al in ons midden bevinden.

 

Win-win voor iedereen?

Tweedehands luxemode klinkt dus als een win-win voor de modeliefhebbers, maar is dit ook zo positief voor de luxemerken zelf? Deze thesis zocht het uit aan de hand van een literatuurstudie en 142 vragenlijsten bij luxeklanten. Het doel van dit onderzoek is om luxemerken te overtuigen om deze duurzame stap te nemen. Meer nog, zo kunnen ze de duurzame trendsetter van de mode-industrie worden, want trends gestart door luxemerken worden algauw door de rest van de modewereld overgenomen.

 

Is luxemode dan zoveel beter?

Eerst werd de luxemarkt even onder de loep genomen om te achterhalen of luxe kopen op zich al dan niet de meer verantwoorde keuze is. Aan de ene kant is luxe wel degelijk duurzamer omdat luxe artikelen vaak tijdloos zijn en een leven lang mee gaan. Ook zijn de stuks vaak in lokale ateliers vervaardigd - denk maar aan het Hermès atelier in Parijs waar de tassen van begin tot eind handgemaakt worden. Dat betekent minder transport tussen fabrieken over de wereld en geen sweatshops in zicht.

Aan de andere kant is de luxemarkt gekend voor het gebruik van bont, exotisch leder en zeldzame edelstenen die vaak niet op een ethische manier verkregen worden. Ook zorgt de luxesector nog steeds voor heel wat afval en vervuiling om hun pracht en praal te creëren. De modeshows waar genodigden de wereld voor rondvliegen en de uitvoerige verpakkingen van de stuks zijn hier het voorbeeld van.

 

Waarom kopen we luxe?

Om te achterhalen of het een goed idee is dat luxemerken ook tweedehands luxe verkopen, bekeek dit onderzoek ook waarom mensen nieuwe of tweedehands luxe kopen. Een eerste reden om nieuwe luxe te kopen is de uitstekende kwaliteit. Ook kunnen luxeklanten een hogere status uitstralen omdat de stuks enorm exclusief zijn. Naast die uitstraling naar anderen, bezorgt het hen ook meer zelfvertrouwen en een hoger zelfbeeld. Verder is er de luxe-beleving die luxeklanten motiveert om luxe te kopen. Niet alleen het paar schoenen zelf is belangrijk, maar ook het volledige winkelbezoek. Luxeklanten worden hartelijk ontvangen in adembenemend mooie luxeboetieks en krijgen er de allerbeste VIP-service.

Klanten die tweedehands luxe kopen lijken enigszins op klanten van nieuwe luxe. Ook zij houden van de hoge kwaliteit en status die de stuks uitstralen. Daarnaast kiezen ze net voor tweedehands omdat de prijzen lager liggen, en omdat ze het duurzamer vinden. Ook houden klanten van tweedehands luxe ervan dat de stuks unieker zijn. Vandaag de dag kan iedereen een Gucci winkel binnenstappen om de nieuwe it-bag te kopen, maar bijna niemand loopt rond met dat zeldzaam exemplaar uit de jaren ’90.

Als een luxemerk dus ook tweedehands luxe zou verkopen, moeten ze ervoor zorgen dat bovenstaande zaken goed bewaard blijven. Als dit lukt, is het verkopen van tweedehands luxe ook voor het luxemerk een win-win. Het luxemerk kan een groter publiek aanspreken, meer omzet draaien en er ook nog eens op toezien dat er geen namaakartikelen verkocht worden.

 

Wat vinden luxeklanten?

Om na te gaan hoe klanten staan tegenover luxemerken die tweedehands luxe verkopen, werd een online experiment opgestart. De helft van de deelnemers kreeg een website te zien van een luxemerk dat zowel nieuwe als tweedehands luxe verkoopt, terwijl de andere helft de echte website van het luxemerk zag. Hierover kregen ze vervolgens een aantal vragen zoals ‘In welke mate vindt u deze handtas exclusief?’ en ‘Hoe leuk vindt u dit luxemerk?’. De antwoorden van 142 luxeklanten werden geanalyseerd om tot een aantal opmerkelijke conclusies te komen.

In het algemeen stonden luxeklanten veel positiever tegenover het luxemerk dat ook tweedehands luxe verkocht, dan wanneer dat luxemerk enkel nieuwe luxe verkocht. Ook vonden luxeklanten het luxemerk begeerlijker en waren ze meer geneigd om bij dat luxemerk te kopen. Daarnaast vonden de deelnemers de tweedehands handtas exclusiever, zeldzamer, kwalitatiever én duurzamer dan de nieuwe handtas. Dit staat in contrast met de verwachtingen van de luxesector. Die vreest namelijk dat tweedehands luxe verkopen hun exclusiviteit in gevaar kan brengen. Dit onderzoek toont luxemerken dus dat tweedehands luxe zowel een duurzaam als rendabel vooruitzicht biedt.

Groen licht voor groene luxe dus. Want we houden allemaal wel van een nieuw pareltje in onze kleerkast, maar dan zonder dat dat zeeniveau blijft stijgen.
