The New York Times blijft op de vlakte over Black Lives Matter

De Amerikaanse krant The New York Times zet een genuanceerd beeld neer van de Black Lives Matter-protesten vlak na de dood van George Floyd. Dat de krant daarmee geen duidelijk standpunt inneemt, blijkt uit onderzoek naar nieuwsbeelden uit de eerste week na Floyds dood.

In het onderzoek werden 106 nieuwsbeelden uit 42 artikels geanalyseerd. De beelden werden in zes frames ingedeeld. Die frames gelden als een verzameling van terugkerende thematische, technische en betekenisvolle aspecten van de nieuwsbeelden. Nieuwsmakers gebruiken frames om elementen te benadrukken of net minder aan bod te laten komen in de nieuwsberichtgeving.

Het frame dat het vaakst voorkomt, is dat van het vredevolle protest. Het tweede grootste frame toont de Black Lives Matter-betogingen als een anoniem protest. Enkele kleinere frames bundelen de verhouding tussen demonstranten en ordediensten. Zo zijn er de frames ‘ordediensten in gereedheid’, ‘impasse tussen de demonstranten en de ordediensten’ en ‘conflict tussen de demonstranten en de ordediensten’. Het minst voorkomende frame focust op de verwondingen van demonstranten.

Gewelddadige relschoppers

De verzameling frames geeft duidelijk weer dat de berichtgeving over Black Lives Matter negatieve met positieve elementen combineert. Het aandeel positieve versus negatieve nieuwsbeelden is namelijk even groot. Waar er sprake is van geweld of politie-interventies valt de berichtgeving onder het zogenaamde protestparadigma. Dat is een paraplubegrip voor verschillende terugkerende aspecten in de berichtgeving over protesten, zoals een focus op geweld.

De demonstranten van de Black Lives Matter-protesten worden in het algemeen eerder neutraal of zelfs positief afgebeeld. Zo is er te zien hoe ze deelnemen aan vreedzame sit-ins of marsen. Bovendien impliceert The New York Times de demonstranten niet als daders wanneer er sprake is van vernielingen of rellen. Slechts uitzonderlijk brengen de nieuwsbeelden of hun bijhorende bijschriften de demonstranten in verband met de chaos en de ravage die met het protest gepaard gaan.

Ook de ordediensten worden in beperkte mate aangeduid als schuldigen. Uit de bijschriften blijkt dat zij soms de oorzaak van het conflict zijn, doordat zij de confrontatie met de demonstranten initiëren. Toch neemt The New York Times hier geen sterk standpunt in. Wanneer verwonde demonstranten getoond worden, worden de ordediensten daar op geen enkele manier mee in verband gebracht.

Ver-van-je-bed-show

Heel wat nieuwsbeelden tonen een grote afstand tussen wie of wat er vastgelegd werd op beeld en de camera. Door die grote sociale afstand is de relatie met de toeschouwer weinig intiem. Bovendien blijven de actoren, zowel de demonstranten als de ordediensten, in grote mate anonieme figuren in het protest. Zelfs in de bijschriften zijn ze naamloos. Het protest krijgt dus geen gezicht. Dat bemoeilijkt de identificatie van de toeschouwer met Black Lives Matter als protestbeweging. Op die manier wordt het protest voorgesteld als een ver-van-je-bed-show en nodigt het de toeschouwer niet uit om zich te engageren of om zich emotioneel open te stellen.

De nieuwsbeelden hebben daarnaast weinig aandacht voor de slogans, banners en borden van de demonstranten. Die staan vaak wel mee op de foto, maar zijn slechts zelden de focus van het beeld. Veel boodschappen gaan bovendien verloren doordat ze niet leesbaar zijn. Ook zo wordt de toeschouwer niet betrokken bij de protestbeweging en haar motieven en klachten.

De toon van de nieuwsbeelden beïnvloedt de perceptie van Black Lives Matter als protestbeweging. Doordat de protesten geassocieerd worden met verwondingen, vernielingen en clashes tussen de politie en de demonstranten, zal de protestbeweging dalen in de achting van het publiek. Op die manier wordt Black Lives Matter niet gezien als een legitiem politiek platform, maar als een bedreiging voor de samenleving. De manier waarop Black Lives Matter wordt neergezet in de media heeft dus een invloed op de boodschap van Black Lives Matter, die aan kracht verliest door de negatieve publiciteit. Hoewel de media-aandacht door The New York Times eerder genuanceerd is, zal de negatieve perceptie gemakkelijker onthouden worden door nieuwsgebruikers.
