Zit de microchip binnenkort letterlijk of figuurlijk bij u onder de huid?

Het geklungel met de huis- of autosleutels die nog liever dan een kind verstoppertje spelen is u vast bekend. Voor sommigen behoort dit probleem echter tot het verleden. Niet omdat ze uiterst ordelijk zijn, maar omdat ze hun sleutels in hun hand hebben geïmplanteerd.

Het gaat over de onderhuidse microchip die de grootte heeft van een kleine rijstkorrel. De microchip kan naast deuren openen ook betalingen uitvoeren of dienen als vervoersbewijs op de trein. Op dit moment is de technologie nog een randfenomeen, maar mogelijk hebben we over enkele jaren allemaal een microchip onder onze huid.

Bezorgdheden

Met de onderhuidse microchip bevindt de technologie zich in het lichaam en wordt de mens een beetje een robot. Een supermens, als het ware. De microchip zou het leven gemakkelijker maken en tijd besparen. Toch staan veel mensen weigerachtig tegenover de technologie. Dit is deels te wijten aan bezorgdheden over de gezondheid en privacy. Er wordt namelijk gevreesd dat de chips kunnen worden getrackt. De complottheorie over het vaccin dat een microchip zou bevatten, is een mooie illustratie van de ongerustheid en gevoelens over de technologie.

Toch hebben enkele duizenden mensen wereldwijd zo’n microchip geïmplanteerd. Met een wereldbevolking van zeven miljard is dit aantal relatief klein, maar de technologie heeft een potentieel dat niet mag worden onderschat. Denk maar aan de gsm, die enkele decennia geleden mijlenver verwijderd was van de alomtegenwoordige technologie die het vandaag de dag is.

Innovatief Vlaanderen?

In een thesisonderzoek werd nagegaan hoe groot het potentieel van de onderhuidse microchip in Vlaanderen is. De doelgroep was Vlaamse jongvolwassenen, die via een online survey werd bevraagd. De respondenten werden ingedeeld in groepen op basis van hun mening over onderhuidse microchips en hun antwoord op de vraag of ze de microchip voor verschillende doeleinden zouden implanteren. Er werden vier groepen geïdentificeerd.

De twijfelaars

Een eerste groep bestaat uit jongvolwassenen die twijfelen over de voordelen van de onderhuidse microchip. Ze zien wel het potentieel, maar weten niet of ze de microchip zelf zouden implanteren. 31% van de respondenten behoorde tot deze groep. Deze groep kan worden overtuigd, maar heeft nood aan een extra duwtje in de rug.

De weigeraars

De weigeraars blijven zelfs met een duwtje in de rug standvastig staan. Deze groep bestaat uit jongvolwassenen die de microchip niet accepteren en is met 39% de grootste. Ze vinden de microchip onethisch, hebben minder positieve verwachtingen over de mogelijkheden en voelen meer negatieve emoties wanneer ze aan de technologie denken. Ze zijn ook bezorgd op de medische gevolgen van de microchip.

De goochelaars

Er zijn ook enkele mensen die de onderhuidse microchip wel omarmen, al zijn zij wel in de minderheid. Slechts 14% van de respondenten heeft een positieve mening over de technologie en wil de microchip zelf implanteren. De goochelaars zijn minder bezorgd om de veiligheid en privacy en vinden de microchip een leuke gadget. 

De gezondheidsbeminnaars

Een laatste groep is die van de gezondheidsbeminnaars. Deze mensen zouden de onderhuidse microchip enkel implanteren voor gezondheidsredenen. Het openen van deuren of uitvoeren van betalingen vinden zij niet interessant. 17% van de respondenten behoort tot deze groep.

In het algemeen, bleek dat Vlaanderen het meest open stond voor de microchip wanneer deze wordt gebruikt voor de gezondheid. De interesse voor de microchips als vervoersbewijs bleek eerder beperkt, aangezien 64% van de respondenten aangaf niet geïnteresseerd te zijn in deze functie.

Onzekere toekomst

Uit de resultaten van het onderzoek bleek dat Vlaanderen de onderhuidse microchip nog niet volledig binnenlaat, maar de deur wel op een kier houdt. Een grote groep Vlaamse jongvolwassenen zijn niet geïnteresseerd, maar ook een aanzienlijke groep toont enige twijfel en kan mogelijk wel warm worden gemaakt voor de technologie. Er zijn ook enkele fans te bespeuren, met een grotere acceptatie wanneer de microchip gezondheidsgerelateerd is. De toekomst zal uitwijzen hoe de onderhuidse microchip verder evalueert en of we uiteindelijk gaan naar een wereld waarin sleutels enkel in musea te vinden zijn.
