Fact or fake? Een kwantitatief online survey onderzoek naar het vertrouwen in online nieuwsberichten

Online media: een zegen of vloek voor het vertrouwen in nieuws?

Dat de afgelopen twee jaar onstuimig waren, zal niemand ontkennen. Aan de uitspraken ‘Bill Gates zit achter de pandemie’, ‘De coronavaccins veranderen de menstruatiecyclus’ of ‘Cocaïne helpt tegen het coronavirus’ was geen ontsnappingspoging mogelijk.

Zowel de traditionele media als online media leken nog maar enkel over Covid-19 te berichten.

Sinds de opkomst van digitale mediaplatformen kwam nieuws steeds meer naast andere media-inhoud te staan. Door die overvloed aan informatie en het feit dat tegenwoordig iedereen nieuws kan verspreiden via socialemediakanalen vervaagt de grens tussen waarheid en fake news steeds meer.

Een verhaal van ons allen

Betrap je jezelf wel eens op het geloven van onwaarheden online? Wel, dan is er goed nieuws. Uit onderzoek (Farkas & Schou, 2018)  blijkt dat je helemaal niet de enige bent. De intrede van sociale media maakt dat deze online platformen meer en meer de belangrijkste nieuwsbronnen geworden zijn voor een toenemend aantal mensen en lijken nieuwsconsumenten steeds meer moeite te hebben om correcte van valse informatie te onderscheiden.

Een dalend vertrouwen van het publiek in traditionele berichtgeving met als gevolg. Volgens Imec.Digimeter 2021 is het vertrouwen in nieuws bij de bevraagde Vlamingen gedaald van 63% in 2020 naar 58% in 2021. De Vlaming lijkt zich het liefst via digitale nieuwskanalen te informeren, maar er heerst bezorgdheid omtrent het vertrouwen ervan. Academici benoemen het als de ‘waarheidsparadox’.

Je zou denken dat jongeren als digital natives, net diegenen zijn die zich goed kunnen wapenen tegenover fake news, omdat ze opgegroeid zijn met digitale media en sociale media. Voor informatiegaring beroepen zij zich het meest op socialemediakanalen en komen eerder passief in contact met nieuws en informatie.

In mijn onderzoek wordt deze problematiek verder bestudeerd. Mijn scriptie gaat na welke factoren een invloed hebben op het vertrouwen in online nieuwsberichten op digitale mediaplatformen bij Vlaamse jongvolwassenen.

Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd bij 18-34-jarige Vlamingen die gebruikmaken van sociale mediaplatformen. Het begrip ‘sociale mediaplatform’ werd breed genomen in het onderzoek, en bijgevolg niet beperkt tot één specifiek platform. De data werden grondig onder de loep genomen via meervoudige regressieanalyse en Pearson Correlaties.

Hieruit blijkt dat leeftijd een negatieve invloed heeft op het vertrouwen in online nieuwsberichten. Hoe ouder de respondent is, hoe kleiner de voorspelde verwachting van het vertrouwen in dat online nieuwsbericht. Met andere woorden, het lijkt erop dat de oudere leeftijdsgroepen (25-34-jarigen) minder vertrouwen hebben in online nieuwsberichten tegenover de jongere leeftijdsgroepen (18-24-jarigen). Ga maar eens na bij jouw eigen omgeving zoals je neven, nichten, tantes of nonkels. Hoe zit het met hun vertrouwen in online nieuwsconsumptie?

Daarnaast blijkt dat socialemediacontacten een grotere rol spelen in de voorspelling van het vertrouwen in online nieuwsberichten. Familieleden, leeftijdsgenoten, vrienden, partners en collega’s hebben in dit onderzoek ook een positieve invloed op het vertrouwen. Dit betekent dat als een online nieuwsbericht gedeeld wordt door bijvoorbeeld jouw beste vriend, er een hoger vertrouwen wordt gesteld in dat nieuwsbericht tegenover wanneer je het online tegenkomt van een onbekend iemand.

Daarnaast hangen ook het aantal likes, shares en comments van een bericht op digitale mediaplatformen positief samen met het vertrouwen. Als een online nieuwsbericht gekenmerkt wordt door een hoger sociale media feature (hoge likes, shares en/of comments) dan kent dit opnieuw een hoger vertrouwensniveau. Net zoals het vertrouwen positief samenhangt met de mate waarin de respondent datzelfde bericht verder zou delen, liken of herschrijven. Zo is het vertrouwen positief verbonden met de mate waarin men in interactie zou gaan met dat online bericht.

Zegen of vloek?

Uit deze scriptie kan geconcludeerd worden dat online media een zegen zijn voor ons allen. We kunnen nieuws consumeren via diverse kanalen en hebben als burger meer de vrijheid gekregen om zelf content te publiceren en te kiezen welk nieuws te consumeren alsook hoe en waar.

Het is misschien te verregaand om te stellen dat online media een vloek zijn voor het vertrouwen in nieuws. Het zal afwachten zijn hoe deze digitale platformen in de toekomst evolueren.

Eén ding is alleszins duidelijk. Journalisten en traditionele media zullen moeten meevechten in de grote media war in het winnen van het vertrouwen van de nieuwsconsument tegenover de digitale mediakanalen.
