Tackling CLIL challenges: a digital perspective

Loont een digitale aanpak in CLIL-klassen?

Hoorde u reeds van de nieuwe onderwijsaanpak ‘CLIL’? De afkorting staat voor Content and Language Integrated Learning, een innovatieve methode waarbij een niet-taalvak zoals bv. geschiedenis gegeven wordt in een vreemde taal zoals bv. Engels (Coyle, 2010). Hoewel CLIL een gouden kans vormt om de taalvaardigheden van leerlingen extra te doen groeien (Martens, 2017), brengt CLIL ook heel wat uitdagingen met zich mee (Bruton, 2011). Hoe kunnen CLIL-leerlingen hier maximaal in ondersteund worden? Recent onderzoek stond stil bij het potentieel van digitale tools in de CLIL-klas (Albero-Posac, 2019).

CLIL: hip en trendy

Misschien kent u zelf wel een CLIL-leerling of -leerkracht? De kans is niet onbestaande, want sinds september 2021 zijn er meer dan 140 CLIL-scholen in Vlaanderen (Vlaams Ministerie van Onderwijs, 2021). De stijgende populariteit van CLIL hoeft niet te verwonderen, aangezien belangrijke instanties als de Europese Commissie (2003) CLIL reeds hadden aanbevolen als “een doeltreffende opportuniteit voor leerlingen om hun nieuwe taalvaardigheden in te zetten”. Leerlingen die geschiedenis in het Engels volgen, verwerken bovendien een heleboel Engelse vakspecifieke woorden. Zo’n uitgebreide woordenschat kan best van pas komen als voorbereiding op ons sterk verengelste hoger onderwijs.

Het is niettemin oppassen geblazen voor valkuilen. Door de populariteit en hipheid van het CLIL-concept, dreigen kritische stemmen onder de mat te worden geschoven (Perez Canado, 2016). Het risico is dan dat er aan eventuele uitdagingen niets gedaan wordt omdat ze onopgemerkt blijven. Zo werd er jarenlang geclaimd dat “CLIL geen negatieve impact heeft op de verwerving van de vakinhoudelijke leerstof” (Spratt, 2011: 6). Deze bewering werd echter ontkracht door een reeks kwaliteitsvolle maar toch onderbelichte studies (Bruton, 2013; Dallinger, 2016). CLIL-klassen hebben meer tijd nodig om dezelfde leerplandoelstellingen te bereiken als niet-CLIL-klassen, zo bleek uit een onderzoek bij 1800 Duitse CLIL- en niet-CLIL-leerlingen (Dallinger, 2016). In feite is dit de logica zelve, want CLIL veronderstelt dat er geregeld lestijd wordt vrijgemaakt voor het expliciet behandelen van taaldoelen (Coyle, 2010), wat vaak ten koste gaat van de vakinhoud.

Eureka?

Geconfronteerd met deze uitdaging van een “negatief CLIL-effect” (Dallinger, 2016: 30) werd er naar mogelijke remedies gezocht. In het digitale tijdperk hoef je evenwel niet al te ver te zoeken. De methode van flipping the classroom (FTC), waarbij leerlingen reeds voor de les een filmpje bekijken (i.p.v. huiswerk na de les), heeft in het verleden al meermaals zijn vruchten afgeworpen (Van Alten, 2019). Bijgevolg drong de vraag zich op: in welke mate kan FTC een meerwaarde bieden voor CLIL-leeromgevingen? Om dit te onderzoeken werd digitaal CLIL-materiaal ontworpen voor 15 lesonderwerpen (zie <http://sites.google.com/view/clilhistory>), zoals bv. op maat gemaakte kennisclips op YouTube met Engelse ondertitels, Google Forms met controlevragen over deze clips, Quizlets en woordenlijsten, enz. Dit digitaal CLIL-materiaal werd gebruikt tijdens twee stageperiodes van samen 44 CLIL-lessen in de Broederschool Humaniora Sint-Niklaas, alsook buiten deze stageperiodes in de lessen van de CLIL-leerkrachten aldaar. Via een Google Forms werd na afloop van elke lessenreeks gepeild naar de percepties van zowel leerkrachten als leerlingen over het digitale materiaal.

Resultaten

De eindresultaten waren over het algemeen eerder positief. Alle betrokken leerkrachten gaven aan akkoord te gaan met de stelling dat “het voorbereidende digitaal materiaal een meerwaarde had voor de les of lessenreeks”, en dan vooral in de zin dat “de les vlotter verliep” (33%), dat “de leerlingen de inhouden sneller begrepen” (33%) en dat “de taal minder een hindernis vormde” (17%). Van de 308 bevraagde leerlingen gaf 54,5% aan akkoord te gaan met de stelling dat “het digitaal materiaal hen geholpen had tijdens de les”. Dit getemperde enthousiasme kan misschien deels verklaard worden doordat leerlingen het kijken van een YouTube-filmpje als extra werklast ervaren. Bovendien moet opgemerkt worden dat het aantal leerlingen dat ‘niet akkoord’ ging met de bovenvermelde stelling minder dan 6% bedraagt.

Besluit

Uit dit alles kan besloten worden dat FTC wel degelijk een meerwaarde heeft voor CLIL-leeromgevingen. Tegelijkertijd mag het effect ervan niet overschat worden: FTC is geen wondermiddel. Wellicht kan het ook slechts in beperkte mate compenseren voor het “negatieve CLIL-effect op inhoudverwerving” (Dallinger, 2016). Verder onderzoek is dus nodig: zowel kwantitatief (op een grotere schaal) als kwalitatief (met meer controlegroepen, rekening houdend met andere variabelen). Bij dezen dus een warme oproep aan onze Vlaamse CLIL-deskundigen om de handschoen op te nemen.
