Steeds meer jongvolwassenen investeren hun spaarcenten in cryptomunten in de hoop op korte tijd veel geld te verdienen. Helaas zijn deze investeringen niet zonder gevaren en lijken twintigers over onvoldoende financiële kennis te beschikken om zich hier tegen te wapenen. De vraag luidt hierbij in welke mate deze risico's daadwerkelijk tot uiting komen in de huidige maatschappij.
Zorgen omtrent financiële kennis
Ondanks vele voorgaande cijfers, toonde dit Vlaamse surveyonderzoek bij jongvolwassenen aan dat het misschien toch niet zo slecht gesteld is met de financiële kennis van deze groep. Dat zou goed nieuws zijn, want deze kennis is belangrijk om financiële risico's af te remmen en meer rationele keuzes te maken. Ook blijkt het Vlaams onderwijssysteem, tegen alle verwachtingen in, een effectieve bijdrage te leveren aan deze financiële kennis.
Bovendien toont onderzoek aan dat niet alleen het onderwijs daarbij van belang is, maar dat het ook interessant kan zijn om vrijwillig deel te nemen aan workshops, boeken te lezen over geldzaken, websites te bezoeken enzovoort. Deze informele leeractiviteiten kunnen zelf onze financiële kennis op een betere manier bevorderen dan dat het formeel onderwijs dat kan, omdat het beter inspeelt op onze behoeften en vragen. Jammer genoeg wijst de survey uit dat deze leeractiviteiten nog heel zelden worden gebruikt door jongvolwassenen.
Problematische genderkloof
Via dit onderzoek hebben we helaas ook de problematische genderkloof tussen mannen en vrouwen moeten bevestigen. Zo zijn vrouwen minder financieel geletterd, hebben ze minder ervaring met cryptomunten, volgen ze minder vaak een economische opleiding enzovoort. Dit is verontrustend, omdat het hen mogelijk vatbaarder maakt voor financiële risico's het investeren in cryptomunten.
Kortom, moet zowel het formeel als het informeel onderwijs investeren in betere financiële kennis bij jongvolwassenen met het oog op het verkleinen van de kloof tussen mannen en vrouwen. Dit onderzoek was daarbij een eerste stap richting meer inzicht in deze crypto-hype, maar het is
belangrijk om hier blijvend aandacht voor te hebben.
