Begrijpen we onze hond als we hem aaien?
Veel mensen kiezen om een gezelschapshond in huis te nemen. Als uiting van hun liefde, wordt hun geliefde viervoeter dikwijls geaaid en geknuffeld. Maar hoe ervaart de hond deze, goed bedoelde, liefkozingen? En zijn de eigenaars in staat om te begrijpen wat hun hond hen vertelt? Cheyenne Callens, een gepassioneerde studente agro- en biotechnologie optie dierenzorg aan de VIVES Hogeschool, onderzocht hoe Vlamingen de emotionele toestand van een hond evalueren wanneer de hond geaaid wordt.
De sleutel tot een sterke mens-hond-relatie
Honden worden steeds vaker als gezelschapsdieren gehouden, dit zorgt voor nieuwe wensen en verwachtingen van hondeneigenaren. De tevredenheid over het hondenbezit wordt onder andere beïnvloed door de mens-hond-relatie. Deze band kan tot stand komen door een veilige hechting. Daarnaast speelt communicatie tussen mens en hond ook een cruciale rol. Mensen missen vaak de subtiele lichaamstaal van honden, wat voor verkeerde interpretaties en negatieve interacties kan zorgen. Een betere interpretatie van het hondengedrag zal de mens-hond-relatie en het welzijn van beide partijen bevorderen.
Voor dit onderzoek werd een evenement georganiseerd waarbij deelnemers vijftien video’s te zien kregen, waarin telkens een hond geaaid werd door zijn eigenaar. Alle deelnemers gaven elke hond een score op basis van hoe aangenaam hij het aaien ervaarde en de daarbijhorende toelichting.
Resultaten
De meeste honden vertoonden tal van communicatieve signalen, desondanks baseerden de deelnemers hun scores vaak op een intentie (15%) of emotie (13,3%) zoals ‘hij vraagt om geaaid te worden’ of ‘hij geniet’. Objectief waarneembare gedragingen zoals communicatie via de ogen (8,5%) of staart (6,6%) werden veel minder benoemd.
Mensen zonder kennis over de lichaamstaal bij honden duiden veel minder vaak lichaamstaal aan dan mensen met kennis. Informatie verkregen via de staart en op de rug gaan liggen werden vaker gebruikt om in te schatten dat de hond het aaien aangenaam vond. Dat ondanks honden met hun staart zowel positieve als negatieve gevoelens kunnen weergeven. Bijkomend gaan honden net op hun rug gaan liggen om aan te geven dat ze zich ongemakkelijk voelen bij de interactie.
Noodzaak voor toekomst
Het onderzoek toont aan dat er ook in Vlaanderen nog veel gebrek is aan kennis met betrekking tot het herkennen en begrijpen van de lichaamstaal van honden. Aangezien elkaar goed begrijpen één van de belangrijke sleutels is om in harmonie samen te leven, benadrukt dit onderzoek de noodzaak voor het verspreiden van kennis omtrent hondentaal in Vlaanderen.
