Digitale prentenboeken kiezen om samen met je kleuters te lezen, geen evidentie! Veel keuze, veel mogelijkheden… Deze kijkwijzer helpt leerkrachten op weg.
Wie kent het niet: kleuters die geboeid kijken en luisteren naar een verhaal op de smartphone of tablet? Dankzij de technologische vooruitgang, is er een groot aanbod aan digitale prentenboeken binnen handbereik. Kleuters kunnen er zelf mee aan de slag, en het lezen van zulke prentenboeken kan de taalontwikkeling van kinderen stimuleren. Dus een meerwaarde voor leerkrachten en ouders? Ja… maar ook neen, want niet elk digitaal prentenboek is even geschikt om de taalontwikkeling te stimuleren.
Digitale prentenboeken, een meerwaarde voor leerkrachten en ouders? Ja… maar ook neen.
Het kiezen van digitale prentenboeken is daarmee een grote uitdaging voor leerkrachten en ouders: welk prentenboek moet ik nu inzetten om de taalontwikkeling van mijn kind(eren) te bevorderen? Deze keuze wordt bepaald door meerdere factoren: de inhoud van het verhaal, de interesse en vaardigheden van het kind, maar ook de vormgeving van het prentenboek zelf, en daar zijn veel mogelijkheden in. Geen evidente keuze… die wij wilden ondersteunen aan de hand van een kijkwijzer. We ontwikkelden een kijkwijzer die de verschillende elementen in kaart brengt die kunnen helpen bij het selecteren van digitale prentenboeken in functie van de taalstimulering.

De ontwikkeling van de kijkwijzer verliep niet van vandaag op morgen. We namen eerst de wetenschappelijke literatuur door. Wat zijn volgens wetenschappelijke bronnen belangrijke elementen om mee te nemen als je een prentenboek kiest? Vanuit deze bronnen werd de eerste versie van de kijkwijzer opgesteld. Nadien gingen we in dialoog met experten op vlak van de vroege taalontwikkeling en prentenboeken. Tot slot namen we de proef op de som: vinden kleuterleerkrachten de kijkwijzer een hulpmiddel om digitale prentenboeken te kiezen voor hun klas?
Al deze stappen samen resulteerden in een kijkwijzer bestaande uit 5 grote delen, met aandacht voor (1) het prentenboek, (2) het digitaal prentenboek, (3) mogelijkheden om de taalontwikkeling te stimuleren, (4) mogelijkheden om te differentiëren en (5) mogelijkheden binnen de applicatie.
In de kijkwijzer staan kenmerken en mogelijkheden van digitale prentenboeken beschreven die de taalontwikkeling van kleuters kunnen stimuleren. De kijkwijzer kan daardoor leerkrachten helpen bij het gericht selecteren van digitale prentenboeken, rekening houdend met het doel dat ze willen bereiken en met de kenmerken van hun kinderen.
Maar opgelet, de beste of enige goede keuze bestaat niet, er zijn veel mogelijkheden. De keuze voor een boek is afhankelijk van taaldoel, de kindkenmerken, en de specifieke vormgeving van het prentenboek. Het gaat om maatwerk, en dat lukt mogelijk sterker met de kijkwijzer die helpt digitale prentenboeken te kiezen rekening houdend met deze factoren.
Maar opgelet, de beste of enige goede keuze bestaat niet, er zijn veel mogelijkheden.
Alle leerkrachten die met de kijkwijzer aan de slag gingen, ervaarden deze als een meerwaarde. Ze gaven aan dat ze zich sterker bewust waren van de vele mogelijkheden van digitale prentenboeken. Daarnaast zou de kijkwijzer hen helpen om boeken te selecteren op basis van inhoud en vormgeving, en niet meer op basis van hun buikgevoel of de esthetiek van het boek.
Slechts 17 van de 22 leerkrachten zouden de kijkwijzer ook effectief gaan gebruiken. Het verschil tussen de ervaren meerwaarde, en het toch niet gebruiken van de kijkwijzer, is te wijten aan het beperkte aanbod van digitale prentenboeken zoals beschreven in de kijkwijzer. Wanneer leerkrachten zouden kunnen kiezen uit een groter aanbod aan digitale prentenboeken met meer mogelijkheden dan enkel een voorleesstem, zou het kader zinvoller zijn om te gebruiken.
De kijkwijzer kan volgens de leerkrachten een bron van inspiratie zijn voor het ontwikkelen van digitale prentenboeken. Zowel leerkrachten als ontwikkelaars van prentenboeken kunnen met behulp van de kijkwijzer gericht digitale prentenboeken ontwikkelen met het oog op het realiseren van specifieke doelen bij kinderen rekening houdend met hun competenties en noden. Zo kunnen digitale prentenboeken ter beschikking komen die helpen om de taalontwikkeling van kinderen maximaal te ondersteunen.
De kijkwijzer kan leerkrachten en ontwikkelaars inspireren bij het ontwikkelen van digitale prentenboeken.
De kijkwijzer kan leerkrachten ondersteunen bij het gericht selecteren van digitale prentenboeken, rekening houdend met het doel dat ze willen bereiken en met de kenmerken van hun kinderen. Zo worden digitale prentenboeken een krachtig middel om kinderen te ondersteunen in hun taalontwikkeling.
Het huidige aanbod mag dan nog beperkt zijn, de mogelijkheden zijn talrijk. De kijkwijzer kan daarmee niet alleen een basis zijn voor de selectie van prentenboeken, maar ook voor verder gesprek met leerkrachten en de ontwikkelaars van prentenboeken. Samen aan de slag!, want wie kent het niet, kleuters die geboeid naar een verhaal kijken en luisteren...
