Beroepskeuzespijt: Een blokkade of een kans in je nieuwe functie?

"Ik dacht dat ik een inschattingsfout heb gemaakt door dit carrièrepad te kiezen," verzuchtte een respondent in mijn onderzoek. Dit gevoel, bekend als beroepskeuzespijt, kan een enorme impact hebben op ons werk en leren, vooral wanneer we deze spijt meenemen naar een nieuwe functie. Stel je voor dat je vol enthousiasme een nieuwe baan begint, maar al snel twijfels krijgt over je keuze. Dit contrast tussen verwachting en realiteit kan leiden tot een verlammende spijt die je verdere ontwikkeling beïnvloedt.


Toen Jeroen zijn baan als ingenieur uitvoerde, begon hij al snel te twijfelen aan zijn keuze. Hij vond de technische aspecten minder interessant dan verwacht en de werkdruk benauwde hem. In de hoop op een betere match besloot hij over te stappen naar een creatieve rol in marketing, op zoek naar een spannende nieuwe uitdaging. Maar binnen enkele maanden in zijn nieuwe rol, bleven de gevoelens van spijt en teleurstelling uit zijn vorige functie hem achtervolgen. Deze beroepskeuzespijt maakte het moeilijker voor Jeroen om te leren en zich volledig in te zetten voor zijn nieuwe baan.


Beroepskeuzespijt ontstaat wanneer iemand terugkijkt op hun carrière en zich afvraagt of een andere keuze beter was geweest. Dit kan leiden tot gevoelens van frustratie en onzekerheid, wat de motivatie om nieuwe vaardigheden te leren kan ondermijnen. In mijn onderzoek vond ik dat dit spijtgevoel vooral invloed heeft op informeel leren door persoonlijke bronnen, zoals het vragen om feedback van collega's.


Leerdoeloriëntatie is de motivatie om voortdurend te leren en jezelf te verbeteren. Mensen met een hoge leerdoeloriëntatie zien uitdagingen als kansen om te groeien. Mijn onderzoek toont aan dat deze oriëntatie positief samenhangt met zowel formeel als informeel leren. Dit betekent dat zelfs als je spijt hebt van een carrièrekeuze, een sterke focus op leren je kan helpen om te blijven groeien.


In deze studie zijn 79 professionals in Nederland en België ondervraagt die recent een carrièreverandering hadden doorgemaakt. Ze vulden vragenlijsten in over hun ervaringen met beroepskeuzespijt, hun leerdoeloriëntatie en hun betrokkenheid bij werkgerelateerd leren.


Uit de resultaten blijkt dat beroepskeuzespijt negatief samenhangt met informeel leren door persoonlijke bronnen, zoals feedback van collega's. Aan de andere kant doen mensen met een hoge leerdoeloriëntatie meer aan informeel leren via omgevingsbronnen en zijn ze actiever in formeel leren. Dit suggereert dat organisaties baat kunnen hebben bij het stimuleren van een leerdoelgerichte cultuur om de negatieve effecten van beroepskeuzespijt te mitigeren en het werkgerelateerd leren te bevorderen.


Het begrijpen van de impact van beroepskeuzespijt en de rol van een sterke leerfocus kan organisaties helpen bij het ontwikkelen van betere trainingsprogramma's. Door een cultuur van continu leren te bevorderen, kunnen bedrijven hun werknemers helpen om met spijt om te gaan en zich te blijven ontwikkelen. Bovendien is het belangrijk dat organisaties erkennen dat gevoelens van spijt uit een voorgaande functie de leermogelijkheden in een nieuwe functie kunnen beïnvloeden. Door hier rekening mee te houden en passende ondersteuning te bieden, kunnen bedrijven de overgang voor hun werknemers soepeler maken en hun professionele groei bevorderen.


Jeroen ontdekte dat zijn aanvankelijke spijt hem niet hoefde tegen te houden. Door zich te richten op concrete leerdoelen en zichzelf te verbeteren, vond hij nieuwe motivatie en succes in zijn marketingrol. Dus, als je ooit twijfelt aan je carrièrekeuzes, onthoud: het is nooit te laat om te leren en te groeien. Omarm je spijt als een kans om jezelf opnieuw uit te vinden en te excelleren.
