Van conservatie naar conversatie:
Een theoretische en praktijkgerichte verkenning van erfgoed als levende grammatica van vergankelijkheid en transformatie.
In Antwerpen werd deSingel uitgebreid met subtiele ingrepen die imperfecties lieten bestaan. In Brugge verrees het Concertgebouw als nieuw baken naast historisch patrimonium. In Genk kreeg de mijnsite C-Mine een tweede leven. Telkens merken we dezelfde spanning tussen restaureren of vernieuwen en behouden of loslaten. Eeuwenlang zagen we erfgoed als iets dat moest standhouden tegen de tand des tijds. Restauratie was de reflex en conservering het dogma. Nu klinkt een steeds luidere roep om anders te kijken naar verval, verlies en verandering binnen onze huidige erfgoedstudies. Een stem die daarin zonder twijfel valt op te merken is die van Caitlin DeSilvey, een cultureel geografe, die meent dat net het “niet ingrijpen” als daad van zorg mag worden beschouwd.

In de architectuurtheorie heerst een groeiend besef dat taal meer is dan een hulpmiddel om vormen te beschrijven: woorden scheppen betekeniskaders en sturen hoe gebouwen en erfgoed worden begrepen. Opvallend aan DeSilveys werk is niet alleen de inhoud, maar vooral ook haar taalgebruik. Ze gebruikt woorden die botsen, paradoxen die dwingen tot nadenken. Begrippen als “porous archives” (doorlaatbare archieven) en “entropic practice” (erfgoed-/ontwerppraktijk die chaos omarmt) openen een vocabulaire dat de klassieke dichotomie van bewaren of verliezen doorbreekt. Haar taal schuurt tegen de traditionele noties van conservering en restauratie en opent ruimte voor een ‘grammatica van tijdelijkheid’.

De masterproef is opgevat als een essaybundel waarin vier thematische opstellen, elk gestuurd door een oxymoron of ogenschijnlijk tegenstrijdig tweeledig begrip (zoals hierboven een paar gegeven), de theorie van Caitlin DeSilvey belichten. Ze behandelen achtereenvolgens onze materiële herinneringscultuur (“ephemeral commemoration”), de rol van natuur en klimaat in verval (“mutable matter”), experiment en kunst als methodologie (“experimental preservation”), en de esthetisering van ruïnes (“ruin porn”). Elk essay koppelt DeSilveys publicaties aan casussen en biedt denkkaders voor de hedendaagse architectuur- en ontwerppraktijk, met als rode draad haar “postpreservation paradigm” (de shift van een reflex tot conserveren naar het omarmen van verval) en “anticipatory history” (het verleden benaderen met oog op toekomstig verdwijnen en dus leren herinneren wat ooit niet meer zal zijn). Als geografisch geschoolde onderzoeker ontwikkelde DeSilvey haar visie vanuit praktijkervaringen van non-interventie, wat leidde tot een kritische houding tegenover traditionele architectuurimpulsen. De centrale vraag van de thesis is of er methoden bestaan om deze stap van een statisch erfgoedbegrip naar een fluïde, procesmatige benadering te zetten en wat dit betekent voor ontwerp en behoud in een wereld van voortdurende transitie. Ter ondersteuning wordt per essay een lexicon toegevoegd met paradoxale termen en oxymorons uit DeSilveys werk, die samen de zoektocht naar adequaat en veelzeggend taalgebruik zichtbaar maken. Elk begrip toont hoe erfgoedtheorie zich verschuift van fixatie naar dynamiek. Impossible inventory bijvoorbeeld stelt dat elke inventaris per definitie onvolledig is. Constitutive absence benadrukt dat afwezigheid soms sterker herinnert dan aanwezigheid.
Vlaanderen en het (on)affe
De Vlaamse praktijk laat zien hoe actueel dit denken is. Industriële sites zoals C-Mine in Genk of (nieuwe) culturele instellingen in een erfgoedcontext zoals het Concertgebouw in Brugge illustreren de spanning tussen restaureren en vernieuwen of zelfs tussen bewaren en spektakelarchitectuur. Een voorbeeld: bij de uitbreiding van deSingel in Antwerpen koos Stéphane Beel voor een gereserveerde dialoog met het modernistische ontwerp van Léon Stynen. De ingrepen nestelen zich stilletjes tussen de bestaande structuren en laten ruimte voor imperfectie. Het taalgebruik en de theorie van DeSilvey (“benign neglect”, “transforming loss” …) helpt in te zien hoe Beels aanpak een zachte vorm van niet-ingrijpen en acceptatie van eindigheid suggereert. Op deze manier werden doorheen het hele onderzoek verbanden gelegd tussen DeSilveys theorie enerzijds en publiekelijk wijdgekende architectuur- en erfgoedprojecten in Vlaanderen anderzijds.
semantisch, maatschappijkritisch en zorgzaam loslaten
Het debat overstijgt daarmee de grenzen van architectuur en raakt aan een bredere maatschappelijke vraag: hoe gaat een samenleving om met eindigheid? De taal die men hanteert is nooit onschuldig. Spreken in termen van “restauratie” of “behoud” suggereert een streven naar eeuwigheid en fixatie; kiezen voor woorden als “curated decay” of “ephemeral commemoration” impliceert een ethiek van acceptatie en zorgzaam loslaten. De lexicons tonen dat taal niet enkel een beschrijving van erfgoed is, maar zelf erfgoed kan worden: een dynamische praktijk die meebeweegt met tijd, verlies en verandering. Zo verschuift erfgoed van een statisch bezit dat bevroren moet blijven naar een levende grammatica van vergankelijkheid, waarin elk woord een ontwerp is dat onze omgang met het verleden en onze verbeelding van de toekomst mede bepaalt.
de ruïne en haar ecologie
Het denken over erfgoed en verval schuift (eventueel onverwacht) ook aan bij het hedendaagse duurzaamheidsdebat. Waar duurzaamheid vaak gelijkstaat aan ‘bewaren voor later’, laat deze benadering zien dat het ook kan door energie, materialen en middelen níet te verspillen aan eindeloos herstel. Door het tijdelijke en onvolmaakte te aanvaarden, ontstaat een alternatief pad waarin circulair denken, ecologische continuïteit en adaptief hergebruik vanzelfsprekend worden. Het is een pleidooi om de levenscycli van gebouwen niet langer te forceren, maar ze te lezen als ecologische processen waarin transformatie, herbestemming en zelfs aftakeling een rol mogen spelen.
Stel je dus voor dat we erfgoed niet langer alleen redden, maar ook laten sterven. Misschien vinden we daarin juist een meer eerlijke manier om met ons verleden én onze toekomst om te gaan zonder de ‘ruïne-esthetiek’ persé commercieel uit te buiten.
