En ik dan? - Hoe kinderen zelf hun gezin beleven

We praten vaak óver kinderen: ouders, leerkrachten of hulpverleners vertellen hoe het thuis loopt. Maar wat gebeurt er als we kinderen zelf aan het woord laten? Dat was de centrale vraag in mijn masterthesis in de klinische psychologie aan de VUB. 

 

Spelen met gevoelens

Het onderzoek gebeurde binnen het FACE©-kader, een kindgerichte manier om gezinsbeleving en zelfexpressie te onderzoeken. Hiervoor werd de Familie Relatie Test (Bene & Anthony, 1957) ingezet, waarbij kinderen kaartjes met korte, gevoelsmatige boodschappen krijgen. Het kind beslist zelf of dat kaartje naar mama, papa, een sibling, zichzelf of, als het niet past, naar de fictieve figuur Meneer Niemand gaat.

Op die manier konden kinderen gevoelens van betrokkenheid, afhankelijkheid en positieve en negatieve emoties uitdrukken zonder dat er verbale communicatie vanuit het kind nodig was.

 

Honderd kinderen in Antwerpen

Ik onderzocht 100 kinderen uit het regulier basisonderwijs in de provincie Antwerpen (51 jongens, 49 meisjes), allemaal tussen zes en acht jaar oud. Hen vroeg ik naar hun gevoelens tegenover mama, papa, broers en zussen, én naar zichzelf. Hun antwoorden werden vergeleken met achtergrondgegevens: leeftijd, geslacht, gezinssamenstelling, culturele context. Daarnaast vulden hun ouders en leerkrachten vragenlijsten in over opvoedingsstijl, gezinsfunctioneren en het sociaal-emotioneel functioneren van het kind. Zo kon ik het beeld van de kinderen koppelen aan hun omgeving. 

 

Wat blijkt?

De kaartjes lieten zien dat kinderen elk gezinslid op een eigen manier beleven:

  • Mama kreeg het vaakst de gevoelens van betrokkenheid, gevolgd door siblings en daarna vader.
  • Moeder werd ook het meest positief benaderd: ze kreeg de meeste positieve gevoelens én afhankelijkheid.
  • Negatieve gevoelens werden het vaakst aan Meneer Niemand toegeschreven. Daarna volgden vader, siblings, moeder en het kind zelf.

 

De kracht van verschillen

Niet alle kinderen keken op dezelfde manier naar hun gezin. Uit de analyses kwamen enkele verschillen naar voren:

  • Leeftijd en geslacht maakten geen algemeen significant verschil, al plaatsten jongens en oudere kinderen wel vaker afhankelijkheidsgevoelens buiten het gezin.
  • Siblingpositie telde wel: middenkinderen uitten minder positieve gevoelens naar hun siblings.
  • Aantal siblings en siblinggeslacht speelden mee: kinderen met uitsluitend zussen rapporteerden meer positieve gevoelens naar hun moeder.

  • Gezinssamenstelling had impact: kinderen uit gescheiden gezinnen plaatsten minder afhankelijkheidsgevoelens buiten het gezin dan kinderen uit kerngezinnen.

     

    Ook cognitieve en sociaal-emotionele factoren speelden een rol:

  • Kinderen met lager cognitief functioneren plaatsten meer gevoelens buiten het gezin.
  • Kinderen met sociaal-emotionele problemen beleefden hun relatie met vader vaker negatief, maar voelden zich juist méér afhankelijk en betrokken bij hun moeder.
  • In gezinnen met een minder goed functionerend klimaat werden meer positieve gevoelens buiten het gezin geplaatst, terwijl siblings net meer betrokkenheid toonden naar elkaar.

 

Waarom dit belangrijk is

Het belang van deze resultaten reikt verder dan de academische wereld.

Voor de klinische praktijk bieden de resultaten aanknopingspunten om kinderen spelenderwijs hun gevoelens te laten tonen. Het toont daarbij het belang van de Familie Relatie Test als enig Nederlands genormeerd instrument om de gezinsbeleving wetenschappelijk onderbouwd te onderzoeken.

Voor beleid is dit onderzoek een pleidooi om kindgerichte instrumenten standaard in te zetten bij gezinsondersteuning, en om onderzoek naar speelse methoden van kindbeleving verder te stimuleren.

 

En ik dan?

Mijn masterproef, getiteld “En ik dan? Het kindperspectief in de context van opvoeding en gezin in de provincie Antwerpen bij kinderen van 6 tot 8 jaar”, toont aan dat het kindperspectief unieke informatie geeft die we niet uit ouder- of leerkrachtrapporten halen. Door zowel beschrijvende patronen als verbanden met demografische, gedragsmatige en contextuele factoren in kaart te brengen, liet ik zien hoe breed en divers gezinsbeleving kan zijn.

De titel van mijn thesis "En ik dan?" vat daarbij alles samen. In gezinnen, scholen en hulpverlening wordt er vaak over kinderen gesproken. Voor dit werk mocht ik de Jeanine Segersprijs van de VUB ontvangen; een erkenning die onderstreept dat luisteren naar kinderen geen bijzaak, maar noodzaak is.
