Kijken mannen écht graag naar gewelddadige pornografie?
Keek u vandaag al naar porno? Of eerder naar een serie op Netflix? Ik zet mijn geld in op het eerste. Maak u geen zorgen, ik heb uw zoekgeschiedenis niet geraadpleegd. Het is gewoon kansrekenen! Pornhub staat al jarenlang bovenaan de lijst van meest bezochte websites in België en de rest van de wereld. Met de groeiende aanwezigheid van gewelddadige termen als hardcore, BDSM, choking en spanking in titels van pornovideo’s is het tijd om ons af te vragen: weet de pornoconsument wel waar hij op klikt?
Wat niet weet, niet deert?
Om de populariteit van gewelddadige pornografie te onderzoeken creëerde ik fictieve titels van pornovideo’s en legde die voor aan 430 mannen - meer dan 70% van de Pornhub-bezoekers zijn nu eenmaal mannen. De titels gingen van relatief onschuldig, bijvoorbeeld “Boyfriend fucks girlfriend”, tot – op zijn zachtst gezegd – aanstootgevend, zoals “He wanted to beat me to satisfy himself: I said yes”. Een belangrijke vraag was of de gemiddelde consument de duidelijk gewelddadige titels óók als aanstootgevend beschouwde. De resultaten tonen aan dat het merendeel van de bevraagde mannen een duidelijke voorkeur had voor pornotitels zonder geweld. Toch bleek dat 29% van de mannen zouden klikken op de fictieve titels die verwezen naar zware vormen van geweld. Dat is opvallend, want amper 10% van de mannen had in het onderzoek aangegeven dat ze graag naar gewelddadige pornovideo’s keken! Waarom klikte 19% van de deelnemers op titels die verwezen naar brutal sex, strangling of beating, terwijl ze beweerden niet van gewelddadige porno te houden? Misschien hadden deze mannen helemaal niet door dat ze op een gewelddadige pornovideo klikten, simpelweg omdat ze weinig aandacht besteedden aan de betekenis van de titels. Ignorance is bliss, toch?
Rode oortjes of rode wangen
Het zou natuurlijk ook kunnen dat deze mannen stiekem wél graag naar gewelddadige pornografie kijken, maar zich schamen om daar voor uit te komen. Ondanks de immense populariteit van pornowebsites blijft het immers nog steeds een taboe om over eigen pornogebruik te praten, laat staan dat men zijn voorliefde voor gewelddadige pornografie eerlijk zou toegeven voor dit masterproefonderzoek.
Onschuldig…
Of de mannen in het onderzoek nu bewust of onbewust op titels van gewelddadige pornovideo’s klikten, het feit blijft dat ze klikten. In de realiteit zouden ze vervolgens een video te zien krijgen waarin een vrouw het voorwerp werd van spanking, choking of andere vormen van pijniging en vernedering. Deze acties lijken misschien onschuldig, het is tenslotte maar fictie. Uit mijn onderzoek bleek echter dat de mannen die op gewelddadige titels klikten ook negatievere meningen hadden over vrouwen. Zij gingen bijvoorbeeld vaker akkoord met uitspraken zoals “vrouwen maken mij vaak boos” of “veel vrouwen zijn misleidend”. Plots lijkt het klikken op gewelddadige pornotitels dan toch niet meer zo onschuldig.

Meer nog, het onderzoek bevatte niet louter pornotitels met geweld waar beide partners mee konden instemmen, maar ook titels die verwezen naar een verkrachting. “Boyfriend rapes girlfriend”, viel er bijvoorbeeld te lezen. Een glashelder voorbeeld van seksueel geweld, zou u denken. Toch gaf 7% van de mannen aan dat ze op de titel zouden klikken. Zelfs uit de groep mannen die beweerden dat ze níét graag naar gewelddadige pornovideo’s keken zou 4% op de titel hebben geklikt. Deze percentages lijken misschien verwaarloosbaar, maar dat zijn ze allesbehalve. Op Pornhub is het zelfs onmogelijk gemaakt om rape of verkrachting op te zoeken, juist omdat de inhoud zo schadelijk kan zijn. Wanneer men dat toch probeert krijgt men een boodschap te zien van het Instituut voor de Gelijkheid van Vrouwen en Mannen, waarin gewaarschuwd wordt voor beelden van seksueel misbruik. Hoewel dat een vooruitgang is, blijven veel beelden van seksueel (kinder-)misbruik beschikbaar, vaak onder ‘schuiltitels’ met begrippen zoals “finally 18” als verwijzing naar de betrokkenheid van een (net niet) minderjarige en “surprise sex” als eufemisme voor verkrachting. Het is dus duidelijk dat pornowebsites onvoldoende beveiligd zijn om de verspreiding van gewelddadige beelden te voorkomen, zelfs wanneer consumenten niet de intentie hebben om gewelddadige pornovideo’s te bekijken. Wat denkt u, morgen dan toch maar voor die Netflix-serie gaan?
