Een huis vol kennis: Vlaamse studenten en Gambiaanse jongeren bouwen samen aan seksuele voorlichting in Basse

In ons laatste jaar van de bacheloropleiding Toegepaste Psychologie besloten we onze horizon te verbreden door een internationale ervaring op te doen. We kozen ervoor om ons derde jaar af te ronden met een Mobility Window Project in Basse, URR, Gambia. De centrale onderzoeksvraag van dit project luidde: “Wat zijn de kansen en uitdagingen bij het geven van seksuele voorlichting aan jongeren in Basse, URR, Gambia?”
We startten het project met een grondig onderzoek naar heersende opvattingen, culturele gevoeligheden en het kennisniveau over seksualiteit, voortplanting en persoonlijke grenzen binnen de Gambiaanse context. Deze inzichten vormden de basis voor het ontwikkelen van educatieve sessies, die we in samenwerking met lokale partners voorbereidden, uitwerkten en uitvoerden over een periode van 15 weken. Tijdens dit proces leerden we beter begrijpen hoe jongeren deze thema’s ervaren, welke vragen en zorgen ze hebben en in hoeverre ze openstaan voor dialoog over seksualiteit.
Om de inhoud van onze sessies te structureren, ontwikkelden we een visualisatie die als rode draad door het project liep: het huismetafoor. Het dak van het huis symboliseerde het overkoepelende thema ‘seksuele voorlichting’, terwijl de bouwstenen de verschillende onderwerpen vertegenwoordigden die we behandelden, zoals biologie en voortplanting, puberteit en menstruatie, seksueel overdraagbare aandoeningen (soa’s), anticonceptie, vrouwelijke genitale verminking (VGV), instemming en grenzen. Deze thema’s werden zorgvuldig gekozen in samenspraak met onze lokale partners en op basis van gesprekken die we voerden in lokale scholen, zodat we konden inspelen op de specifieke noden, vragen en gevoeligheden binnen de gemeenschap. Elke sessie richtte zich op één specifiek onderwerp en werd op een toegankelijke en cultuur sensitieve manier gegeven. Door zowel jongens als meisjes actief te betrekken, moedigden we deelnemers aan om kritisch na te denken over stereotypen en de invloed van traditionele en religieuze opvattingen op hun kijk op seksualiteit.
Daarnaast legden we waardevolle contacten met een imam en lokale organisaties zoals de Gambian Red Cross Society en Basse Got Talent. Dankzij deze samenwerkingen konden we onze sessies cultuursensitief organiseren en misvattingen over soa’s, menstruatie en anticonceptie corrigeren. Voorbeelden van misvattingen waren het geloof dat je niet zwanger kunt raken tijdens de eerste keer seks of tijdens menstruatie, en dat het gebruik van twee condooms veiliger zou zijn. Deze partnerschappen waren niet alleen essentieel voor het uitwisselen van kennis, maar ook om een brug te slaan naar de gemeenschappen binnen Basse.
Onze begeleiding werd verzorgd door Rita Vancoillie, voorzitster van vzw Contano en verbonden aan Hogeschool VIVES. Dankzij haar dubbele rol konden we bij haar terecht voor zowel academische ondersteuning als persoonlijke begeleiding.
Naast de professionele inzichten bracht dit project ook veel persoonlijke groei met zich mee. We leerden om niet te focussen op wat ontbreekt, maar op wat wél mogelijk is. Waar infrastructuur en comfort in België vaak als vanzelfsprekend worden gezien, zagen we in Gambia hoe belangrijk gemeenschapszin, flexibiliteit en creativiteit zijn.
