Borstvoeding zonder zwangerschap: kan dat echt?
Een moeder die haar adoptiekind voedt met haar eigen melk. Een transgender vrouw die haar baby aanlegt en voelt hoe de melk toeschiet. Een koppel waarin beide ouders borstvoeding geven. Voor velen klinkt het verrassend of zelfs ongelooflijk, maar het kan: dankzij “lactatie-inductie”, het proces waarbij melkproductie wordt opgewekt zonder voorafgaande zwangerschap.
“Borstvoeding gaat niet alleen over voeding,” zegt Lore Wuyts, bachelor in de vroedkunde. “Het gaat ook over hechting, zelfvertrouwen en inclusieve zorg. Toch weten veel mensen – zelfs zorgverleners – niet dat lactatie-inductie bestaat.”
Hoe melk ontstaat zonder zwangerschap
Bij lactatie-inductie worden de borsten gestimuleerd om melk te produceren zonder dat er een zwangerschap is geweest. Dat kan door herhaald kolven en borststimulatie, soms gecombineerd met medicatie of kruiden die de melkproductie ondersteunen. Het proces vraagt tijd, inzet en vaak begeleiding. Resultaten verschillen, maar zelfs kleine hoeveelheden melk kunnen bijdragen aan de voeding en vooral aan de emotionele band tussen ouder en kind.
Waarom nu relevanter dan ooit?
Onze samenleving kent steeds diversere gezinsvormen. Ouders worden dat via adoptie, draagmoederschap of binnen LGBTQ+-relaties. In zulke situaties kan lactatie-inductie een manier zijn om beide ouders een actieve voedende rol te geven. “Het maakt ouderschap gelijkwaardiger,” zegt Wuyts. “Voor adoptieouders kan het een manier zijn om de band met hun kind te versterken. Voor koppels waarin beide ouders voeden, geeft het praktische voordelen én een unieke gedeelde ervaring.”
Vroedvrouwen als gidsen in het voedingsavontuur
Hoewel het fenomeen internationaal bekend is, blijft lactatie-inductie in België vaak onderbelicht. Er bestaan weinig richtlijnen en veel zorgverleners zijn onvoldoende vertrouwd met het proces. Hier ligt een belangrijke kans voor vroedvrouwen.
“Vroedvrouwen staan dicht bij (wens)ouders,” legt Wuyts uit. “Zij kunnen informeren, begeleiden en motiveren. Hun rol is niet alleen technisch – zoals bij borststimulatie of het opvolgen van medicatie – maar ook emotioneel. Ouders hebben nood aan empathische, niet-oordelende begeleiding.”
Taboes, uitdagingen en doorzettingsvermogen
Het traject naar lactatie-inductie is intensief. Ouders moeten vaak meerdere keren per dag kolven, soms maanden voor de komst van hun kind. Dat vraagt discipline en kan emotioneel belastend zijn, zeker als de melkproductie traag op gang komt.
Daarnaast botsen ouders geregeld op onbegrip. Familie of vrienden twijfelen aan nut en haalbaarheid, en ook zorgprofessionals reageren soms sceptisch. “Dat gebrek aan erkenning kan zwaar wegen,” zegt Wuyts. “Ouders voelen zich dan onzeker of falen sneller met het traject.”
Een blik vooruit
In haar bachelorproef werkte Wuyts een concept uit onder de noemer “Voeden zonder Grenzen”, met drie pijlers: een opstartkit voor ouders, een online forum voor ervaringsuitwisseling en een educatief platform voor zorgverleners. “Het doel is om kennis en ervaringen samen te brengen, zodat lactatie-inductie meer bekend raakt en ouders zich gesteund voelen.”
Voeden voorbij de biologie
Lactatie-inductie gaat verder dan voeding. Het is een symbool van zorg op maat, van diversiteit en van liefde. Het toont dat ouderschap niet beperkt is tot biologie, maar dat er verschillende wegen zijn om nabijheid te creëren.
Zoals Wuyts het zelf samenvat: “Het gaat om liefde in vloeibare vorm – niet gedragen, maar wel gevoed.”
