Tijd voor vertrouwen: patiënten aan het roer van hun medicatie

Bachelorstudenten verpleegkunde stellen zelfbeheer van thuismedicatie tijdens opname in vraag
Patiënten willen zelfstandiger zijn. Verpleegkundigen willen tijd winnen. Maar wie beheert dan de pillen? Een groep studenten onderzocht of patiënten tijdens hun ziekenhuisverblijf hun medicatie zelf kunnen beheren. Dat blijkt minder vanzelfsprekend dan gedacht.
Waarom dit iedereen aanbelangt
Stel je voor: je komt op de chirurgische afdeling terecht voor een geplande ingreep. Je bent gewend om thuis zelf je medicatie te nemen. Maar het moment dat je bent opgenomen, nemen de verpleegkundigen dat helemaal over. Logisch? Misschien. Maar wat als dat ook anders kan en beter? In de bachelorproef wordt onderzocht of het mogelijk is om patiënten ook in het ziekenhuis hun thuismedicatie zelf te laten beheren. Het doel: autonomie verhogen en werkdruk verlagen.
Wat het onderzoek precies onderzocht
De studenten kozen voor een mixed-methods aanpak. Ze combineerden interviews met verpleegkundigen, tijdmetingen op de werkvloer en een enquête over attitudes rond zelfbeheer van medicatie. Daarnaast ontwikkelden ze een prototype van een informatieve site. Daarmee willen ze verpleegkundigen beter informeren en hun terughoudendheid verminderen. Want die terughoudendheid is wel degelijk voelbaar.
Verpleegkundigen twijfelen: “Wie is er verantwoordelijk?”
Verpleegkundigen zien wel voordelen: tijdswinst, meer betrokken patiënten, en minder druk tijdens medicatiemomenten. Maar er zijn ook zorgen. “Wat als een patiënt iets fout doet?” vraagt een verpleegkundige zich af. “Als er iets misloopt, kijken ze toch naar ons.” Zorgverleners vrezen voor medicatiefouten, het verlies van controle en onduidelijke verantwoordelijkheidsverdeling. De onderzoekers concluderen: zonder heldere protocollen is zelfbeheer niet realistisch.
Wat het kan betekenen voor de zorg
Dit project heeft potentieel. Zeker met het gekende personeelstekort en de hoge werkdruk. Maar het is niet geschikt voor elke patiënt. “We moeten goed inschatten wie bekwaam is en wie niet,” zegt een van de studenten. “En verpleegkundigen moeten hierin ondersteund worden.” De tool die ze ontwikkelden, is een eerste stap. De werkvloer heeft nood aan duidelijke richtlijnen, kennis en vertrouwen.
Het onderzoek als startschot
De bachelorproef was kleinschalig. Er is nog geen implementatie. Maar de studenten leggen wel een belangrijke basis. Ze tonen aan dat het onderwerp leeft. En dat de zorg klaar is om anders te kijken naar het klassieke beeld van medicatiebeheer.
Pillen, vertrouwen en de toekomst van de zorg
De hoofdvraag blijft: durven we patiënten meer vertrouwen geven tijdens hun opname? Dit onderzoek laat zien dat het kan. Met goede voorwaarden. De mogelijkheid is er, maar het vraagt doordachte keuzes. En vertrouwen, van beide kanten.
