Wanneer geluk en verdriet samenkomen
Het krijgen van een meerling wordt vaak gezien als een wonder. Achter dat geluk kan echter diep verdriet schuilgaan. In haar bachelorproef vroedkunde onderzocht Sofie De Roeck een thema waar nauwelijks over gesproken wordt: het verlies van een kind binnen een meerlingzwangerschap.
Uit cijfers blijkt dat de perinatale sterfte in Vlaanderen bij meerlingen ruim drie keer zo hoog ligt als bij eenlingen: 20,2 ‰ tegenover 6,2 ‰. Achter deze cijfers schuilen verhalen van ouders die zowel vreugde als rouw ervaren. Ze verwelkomen één of meerdere kinderen, maar verliezen tegelijk een kind waar ze al toekomstplannen voor maakten. Deze emotionele tweestrijd maakt het rouwproces extra complex en zwaar.
Dubbel verdriet
Het verlies van een kind is altijd ingrijpend, maar bij meerlingen is het rouwproces bijzonder complex. Ouders moeten rouwen om hun overleden kind, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd zorgen voor het overlevende kind. Dit veroorzaakt een mix van verdriet, vreugde, schuldgevoel en verwarring. Vaak stellen ouders hun eigen rouw uit om zich volledig te richten op de zorg voor het overlevende kind. Tegelijkertijd herinnert het overlevende kind hen voortdurend aan het gemis. Elke mijlpaal kan bijvoorbeeld herinneringen aan het verlies oproepen en emoties versterken, waardoor het verlies een blijvende invloed op het gezin heeft. Gevoelens van eenzaamheid en onbegrip komen daardoor vaak naar voren. Uit onderzoek en getuigenissen blijkt dat ouders van een overleden kind uit een meerlingzwangerschap vaak onvoldoende erkenning krijgen voor hun verlies. Daarnaast wordt hun verdriet door de omgeving vaak onderschat, omdat de aandacht vooral uitgaat naar het overlevende kind. Dit kan het rouwproces bemoeilijken en zorgen voor een langdurige emotionele belasting.
Hoe rouwen ouders?
Rouw is een individueel, veelzijdig proces dat doorheen de tijd verandert. Het verwerken van het verlies van een kind uit een meerlingzwangerschap verloopt voor elk gezin anders. Sommige ouders stellen hun rouw uit omdat de zorg voor de pasgeborene alle aandacht vraagt. Voor anderen overheerst net het verdriet, waardoor de band met het levende kind onder druk komt te staan. Het rouwproces verloopt bovendien vaak verschillend tussen mannen en vrouwen. Waar vaders de neiging hebben om zich te richten op praktische zaken, gaan moeders vaker actief steun zoeken en emoties intenser gaan beleven. Deze verschillen kunnen extra druk zetten op een relatie.
Maatschappelijke blinde vlek
In de samenleving krijgt het verlies van een kind binnen een meerlingzwangerschap vaak te weinig aandacht. Omdat er nog een levend kind is, verwacht de omgeving dat ouders vooral dankbaar zijn. Voor veel ouders kan deze reactie uit de omgeving kwetsend zijn. Ouders rouwen niet alleen om hun kind, maar voelen zich ook niet gehoord wanneer hun verdriet nauwelijks wordt erkend. Net die erkenning maakt een groot verschil: het geeft hun emoties bestaansrecht en ruimte. Wat zij nodig hebben, is een samenleving die hun verhaal in zijn geheel ziet: een verhaal waarin vreugde en verlies onafscheidelijk met elkaar verweven zijn.
Onmisbare rol van de vroedvrouw
Een van de belangrijkste bevindingen van het onderzoek is dat vroedvrouwen een sleutelrol spelen in dit proces. Hun nabijheid tijdens zwangerschap en geboorte maakt hen vaak tot de eerste vertrouwenspersonen. Het geven van erkenning, het gebruik van de naam van het overleden kind, het geven van duidelijke informatie en emotionele ondersteuning worden door ouders als zeer waardevol ervaren. Ook doorverwijzing naar gespecialiseerde zorg en continuïteit in de zorg kan helpen. Veel vroedvrouwen geven echter aan zich onzeker en onvoldoende voorbereid te voelen om met dit soort verlies om te gaan, terwijl juist zij een groot verschil kunnen maken door ouders te ondersteunen in deze ingrijpende situatie. Extra scholing, begeleiding en sensibilisering zijn daarom nodig om hen beter voor te bereiden en ouders een betere ondersteuning te kunnen bieden.
Getuigenissen in podcastvorm
Om de stilte rond het verlies van een meerling te doorbreken, werd een podcast ontwikkeld waarin drie moeders -Annelies, Muriel en Marieke- hun persoonlijke verhaal vertellen. Hun ervaringen laten zien hoe verschillend rouw kan verlopen, maar ook welke noden telkens terugkeren en hoe waardevol het is om gehoord te worden. Ze spreken open over schuldgevoel, de strijd om erkenning en de zoektocht naar een evenwicht tussen rouw en zorg voor het overlevende kind. De verhalen zijn intiem en soms confronterend, maar tegelijkertijd hoopvol. Ze tonen hoe elke ouder een eigen weg zoekt om met het verlies om te gaan. Voor luisteraars die zelf iets soortgelijks hebben meegemaakt, biedt de reeks herkenning en troost. Voor zorgverleners en omstaanders opent de podcast een venster naar een vaak onzichtbare realiteit en reikt hij praktische tips aan om ouders beter te ondersteunen in deze moeilijke periode. Naast de getuigenissen van ouders bieden een psychologe gespecialiseerd in rouw en verlies en een vroedvrouw professionele duiding in de podcast. Zij plaatsen de ervaringen van de moeders in een bredere context en reiken concrete handvaten aan voor zorg en begeleiding van getroffen gezinnen. Een belangrijke boodschap van de psychologe en de vroedvrouw wordt samengevat in het acroniem “NIVEA”: Niet Invullen Voor Een Ander. Zorgverleners, maar ook vrienden en familie, doen er goed aan steeds te vragen wat ouders nodig hebben, in plaats van dat zelf in te vullen.
Steun van vroedvrouwen, familie en de samenleving kan een groot verschil maken voor ouders die een kind verliezen.
Nood aan meer aandacht
Het onderwerp krijgt nog steeds te weinig aandacht in onderzoek, in opleidingen van zorgverleners en in de samenleving. Hoewel dit rouwproces vaak onderbelicht blijft, kan aandacht en steun van vroedvrouwen, familie en de samenleving een groot verschil maken voor ouders. Literatuur en persoonlijke verhalen tonen duidelijk aan dat erkenning, open communicatie en blijvende ondersteuning cruciaal zijn. Door meer bewustzijn te creëren en zorgverleners beter op te leiden, kan zorg geboden worden die écht aansluit bij de noden van ouders in een periode waarin geluk en verdriet onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn
