Bepaling van vers- en drooggewicht van sla op basis van RGB-camerabeelden met een convolutional neural network (CNN)

Sla (Lactuca sativa L.) is wereldwijd één van de belangrijkste bladgroenten met een breed scala aan toepassingen, van salades tot medicinale producten. In het jaar 2023 bedroeg de wereldwijde productie van sla ongeveer 28,08 miljoen ton. De teelt van sla is een interessante teelt voor vele telers aangezien sla een relatief winstgevend gewas is omdat de teeltperiode kort is en de opbrengsten relatief hoog zijn. Sla is over het algemeen een belangrijke en veelzijdige groente die verschillende voordelen biedt en een belangrijke rol speelt in de voedselvoorziening en de gastronomische keuken. Bovendien stijgt de wereldproductie van sla jaarlijks, met gemiddeld ca. 248.333 ton in de afgelopen jaren, wat onder andere te wijten is aan de toenemende vraag naar voedsel ten gevolge van de bevolkingstoename in de wereld. 

Door de jaarlijkse toenemende vraag naar sla wereldwijd zijn slatelers genoodzaakt om de productie ervan efficiënter te maken. Dit kan behaald worden door het ontwikkelen van gewasmodellen die de sla-telers helpen voor het verbeteren van klimaat-, nutriënten- en irrigatiebeheerstrategieën om een optimale slaproductie te verkrijgen. Deze gewasmodellen kunnen onder andere bekomen worden door het meten van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla die fungeren als groei-indicatoren omdat deze nauw verband houden met de transpiratie en fotosynthese van de slaplant. Bovendien kunnen deze groei-indicatoren, vers- en drooggewicht van sla, de sla-telers helpen bij het bepalen van geschikte oogsttijden wat zorgt voor de verbetering van de economische status van de slatelers. De traditionele methoden, waarbij doorgaans plantenmonsters worden verzameld en analytische instrumenten in een laboratorium worden gebruikt, voor het meten van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla zijn tijdrovend, arbeidsintensief en destructief. Hierdoor is het gebruik van accurate en niet-destructieve meetmethodes voor het meten van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla noodzakelijk. 

Vanwege de nood aan onder andere accurate en niet-destructieve meetmethodes voor het ontwikkelen van gewasmodellen kent de glastuinbouw, waar de teelt van sla onderdeel van uitmaakt, een stelselmatige verschuiving van de traditionele glastuinbouw naar precisietuinbouw onder glas. Momenteel wordt er al veel gebruik gemaakt van computervisie-gebaseerde methoden voor het schatten van groeigerelateerde kenmerken van land- en tuinbouwgewassen. Deze beeldgebaseerde methoden extraheren specifiek laag-niveau kenmerken, zoals kleur- en structuurgerelateerde kenmerken, uit digitale beelden en leggen een verband tussen deze lage-niveau kenmerken en handmatig gemeten groeigerelateerde eigenschappen. Ondanks dat verschillende computervisie-gebaseerde methoden veelbelovende resultaten opleveren voor het schatten van groeigerelateerde kenmerken kampen deze methoden met enkele problemen. Ten eerste zijn deze methoden gevoelig voor ruis wat de beeldsegmentatie en extractie van kenmerken beïnvloedt en de schattingsnauwkeurigheid mogelijks doet afnemen. Omdat het vastleggen van beelden in praktijkomstandigheden gepaard gaat met ongelijkmatige belichting en rommelige achtergronden is ruis onvermijdelijk. Daarnaast zijn computervisie-gebaseerde methoden sterk afhankelijk van handmatig ontworpen beeldkenmerken en zorgt hierdoor voor een grote rekenkundige complexiteit. Bovendien is het generalisatievermogen van de geëxtraheerde lage-niveau beeldkenmerken beperkt. 

Een potentieel alternatief voor de traditionele methoden alsook voor de computervisie-gebaseerde methoden is het gebruik van convolutional neural networks (CNN’s), een techniek behorende tot het domein van artificiële intelligentie (AI). Een CNN is een artificieel model voor het verwerken van gegevens met een rasterpatroon, zoals afbeeldingen, en is ontworpen om automatisch en adaptief ruimtelijke hiërarchieën van kenmerken te leren. Het gebruik van RGB-camera’s (waar RGB staat voor Rood Groen en Blauw), voor RGB-beeldvorming, in combinatie met een CNN, voor de verwerking van RGB-beelden, bieden voor het bepalen van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla op een accurate en niet-destructieve manier potentieel. Dit aangezien RGB-camera’s breed toepasbaar zijn en CNN's visuele data, zoals RGB-afbeeldingen, met een accurate en hoge efficiëntie kunnen verwerken en analyseren. Het is dan ook nodig om de combinatie van deze twee zaken te onderzoeken en na te gaan of deze een accurate en efficiënte oplossing kunnen bieden voor het niet-destructief meten van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla in de praktijk.

Dit onderzoek valt binnen het project “Intelligente klimaatoptimalisatie met en voor tuinders (KlimOp-AI)” van het Expertisecentrum Energie van Thomas More Geel, waarbij AI-technieken worden toegepast op klimaatgegevens om glastuinbouwbedrijven meer inzichten te geven in de klimaatregeling van serres. Gerelateerd aan dit project werd in dit onderzoek het bepalen van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla, gedurende een gehele teeltronde onder praktijkomstandigheden, op basis van RGB-afbeeldingen met behulp van een CNN onderzocht.

Van verschillende sla-cultivars (Emeldia RZ, Limambo RZ en Volumia) werden RGB-afbeeldingen verzameld. De cultivars Emeldia RZ en Limambo RZ werden elks twee keer zelf opgekweekt om slaplanten afkomstig van twee verschillende teeltrondes te bekomen. Daarnaast waren de slaplanten van de cultivar Volumia afkomstig van een externe slateler en van éénzelfde teeltronde. Van de slaplanten werden RGB-afbeeldingen verzameld onder een camerahoek van 0°, 45° en 90° ten opzichte van het grondoppervlak. Na verzameling van de RGB-afbeeldingen van de slaplanten werd een CNN-model ontworpen met het meest accurate schattingsvermogen. Tenslotte werd het schattings- en generalisatievermogen van het ontwikkelde CNN-model onderzocht.

De resultaten tonen aan dat het meest accurate CNN-model, afgestemd op een relatief kleine dataset, bestond uit 5 convolutielagen en volgende hyperparameters: een leerfrequentie van 0,001; een batchgrootte van 10 en 200 epochs. Het ontwikkelde model schat het vers- en drooggewicht van sla accuraat, met R2 ~ 0,92 – 0,97 en NRMSE ~ 0,19 – 0,34, voor cultivars die in de trainingsdata aanwezig zijn en onder gelijkaardige omstandigheden werden geteeld, mits voldoende trainingsdata. De schattings- en generalisatieprestaties variëren echter sterk per cultivar, mogelijks door morfologische verschillen. Het model toont een zekere robuustheid voor variatie in camerahoeken, al resulteerden de beelden onder een camerahoek van 45° en 90° in de beste schattingen.

Dit onderzoek toont aan dat een CNN-model in combinatie met een RGB-camera als niet-destructieve meetmethode voor de bepaling van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla mogelijkheden biedt. Daarentegen blijft, onder andere door de wisselende generalisatieprestaties, de praktische toepasbaarheid voorlopig nog beperkt. Door verder onderzoek te doen naar CNN's in combinatie met RGB-camerabeelden voor de bepaling van het vers- en drooggewicht van sla en het vergroten van de trainingsdataset met camerabeelden van verschillende sla-cultivars onder diverse teeltomstandigheden, kan dit onderzoek een waardevolle bijdrage leveren aan de ontwikkeling van geautomatiseerde, niet-destructieve meetsystemen voor de precisieteelt van sla.
