Een tussenjaar wordt vaak gezien als een periode om jezelf beter te leren kennen, zelfstandiger te worden of nieuwe ervaringen op te doen. Mijn onderzoek toont echter dat zo’n jaar over meer gaat dan persoonlijke groei alleen. De verhalen van jongeren laten zien dat de waarde van een tussenjaar vooral zit in de mensen die ze onderweg ontmoeten. In een samenleving die sterk inzet op het individu, herinneren zij ons eraan dat betekenis eerder ontstaat in verbinding met anderen.
Je hebt je secundair diploma op zak. Familieleden vragen wat je volgend jaar gaat studeren en vrienden schrijven zich in voor een opleiding. Iedereen lijkt al te weten welke richting hij uit wil. Maar wat als je dat zelf nog niet weet? Steeds meer jongeren in Vlaanderen kiezen ervoor om na het middelbaar eerst een tussenjaar te nemen. De aula maakt plaats voor een reis, een job, vrijwilligerswerk of simpelweg tijd om na te denken over de toekomst.
Toch roept die keuze vaak vragen op bij de omgeving van deze jongeren. “Ga je wel nog weten hoe je moet studeren?” of “Is dat geen verloren jaar?” zijn opmerkingen die velen te horen krijgen. Een tussenjaar past immers niet in het beeld van de klassieke levensloop waarin je na het middelbaar meteen verder studeert. Maar ervaren jongeren hun tussenjaar zelf ook als een verloren jaar? Dat onderzocht ik in mijn masterproef.
Voor mijn onderzoek sprak ik met vijftien jongeren die de afgelopen vijf jaar een tussenjaar namen tussen het secundair en hoger onderwijs. Ik wilde weten welke betekenis het jaar voor hen had gekregen en welke zaken voor hen van belang waren. Hoewel hun verhalen sterk van elkaar verschilden, kwamen enkele thema’s telkens terug.
Het eerste thema gaat over de motieven om een tussenjaar te nemen. Sommige jongeren hadden nood aan rust na jaren van studeren en de stress die dat met zich meebracht. Anderen wilden reizen, werken, nieuwe ervaringen opdoen of waren gewoonweg nog niet klaar om een studiekeuze te maken.
Toch zat achter die verschillende redenen eenzelfde gevoel. Veel jongeren vonden dat ze jarenlang vooral hadden gedaan wat van hen verwacht werd. Het tussenjaar gaf hen de kans om stil te staan bij wat ze zelf wilden. Dus of jongeren nu op zoek waren naar rust of juist naar avontuur, het vertrekpunt was vaak hetzelfde: ze voelden dat ze nood hadden aan iets anders dan nog een jaar aan de schoolbanken.
Wat jongeren het meest waardeerden aan hun tussenjaar was de mogelijkheid om zelf keuzes te maken. Voor het eerst konden ze grotendeels zelf bepalen hoe hun dagen eruitzagen. Ze kozen waar ze heen gingen, welke job ze deden en wat ze zelf belangrijk vonden om te doen. Tegelijk beseften velen dat ze dat niet volledig alleen deden. Ouders speelden vaak een belangrijke rol, bijvoorbeeld door financiële steun te bieden of praktisch mee te helpen organiseren.
Die keuzevrijheid kwam echter niet zonder verantwoordelijkheid. Wie alleen reist, moet zelf problemen oplossen en voor zichzelf zorgen. Wie kiest voor vrijwilligerswerk, moet dit zelf regelen en afspraken nakomen. Wie überhaupt kiest voor een tussenjaar, moet bovendien vaak uitleggen waarom die keuze de juiste beslissing was. Voor de jongeren in dit onderzoek gingen vrijheid en verantwoordelijkheid daarom hand in hand. Zelf keuzes maken betekende ook dat je de gevolgen van die keuzes moest dragen.
Wanneer mensen over een tussenjaar praten, gaat het vaak over persoonlijke groei of jezelf vinden. Ook in mijn onderzoek kwam dat thema naar voren. Jongeren vertelden hoe nieuwe ervaringen hen hielpen om beter te begrijpen wat ze belangrijk vonden. Sommigen ontdekten nieuwe interesses, anderen leerden omgaan met onzekerheid of kregen meer vertrouwen in zichzelf.
Wat mij vooral opviel, was dat de betekenis van het tussenjaar niet alleen lag in het individu. De deelnemers blikten vaak terug op ontmoetingen met andere mensen. Ze vertelden over nieuwe vriendschappen, collega’s, gastgezinnen en medereizigers. Die contacten bleken vaak waardevoller dan de activiteiten zelf. Zo werd een reis betekenisvol door de mensen die ze onderweg leerden kennen en werd een job belangrijk door de collega’s waarmee ze samenwerkten. Zelfs tijd alleen kreeg betekenis doordat bestaande relaties op een andere manier werden beleefd.
Op het eerste gezicht lijkt een tussenjaar een afwijking van het normale studietraject. Toch valt het ook op dat de verhalen van de jongeren net aansluiten bij waarden die vandaag sterk aanwezig zijn in onze samenleving: jezelf ontwikkelen, verantwoordelijkheid nemen en het actief vormgeven van je eigen leven. Het tussenjaar is in die zin dus minder rebels dan het soms lijkt en kan eerder optreden als een soort voorbeeld waaruit we dingen kunnen leren voor onze maatschappij. Waar zingeving bijvoorbeeld vandaag de dag vaak wordt voorgesteld als een individuele opdracht en een na te streven doel, tonen de verhalen van de jongeren uit dit onderzoek dat het zinvolle hem misschien net zit in de verbinding met anderen.
Misschien moeten we daarom stoppen met een tussenjaar te bekijken als een jaar waarin jongeren even niets doen, want voor velen is het net een periode waarin ze leren wat er echt toe doet. En dat maakt het niet zozeer een verloren jaar, maar eerder een jaar dat iets oplevert wat moeilijk in studiepunten of diploma’s te meten valt.
