De verborgen biodiversiteit in een waterdruppel

Wanneer we naar een rivier, meer of waterval kijken, zien we vooral water, zonder misschien te beseffen dat elke druppel een complete leefwereld bevat, bestaande uit wel duizenden microscopischLichtmicroscopisch beeld waarin verschillende soorten diatomeeën zichtbaar zijn. kleine organismen. Een van de belangrijkste groepen zijn de kiezelwieren (ook wel diatomeeën genoemd), eencellige algen opgebouwd uit een prachtig glazen skeletje van pure silica. Hoewel ze onzichtbaar zijn voor het blote oog, spelen deze kiezelwieren een cruciale rol in veel ecosystemen. Door hun fotosynthese vormen ze een belangrijke voedselbron voor andere organismen en dragen ze wereldwijd aanzienlijk bij aan de zuurstofproductie. Elke soort verkiest haar eigen leefomgeving, zodat diatomeeën ons, onderzoekers, veel kunnen vertellen over het milieu waarin ze leven. Hoewel diatomeeën over de hele wereld voorkomen, blijken ze toch vaak een beperkte verspreiding te hebben. Net daarom is het belangrijk om te weten waar in de wereld welke soorten voorkomen en in welke omstandigheden. 

 

Op zoek naar een verborgen biodiversiteit

In mijn masterthesis onderzocht ik de diversiteit van zoetwaterdiatomeeën in de Westfjorden van IJsland, één van de meest afgelegen en minst onderzochte regio's van dat land. Kaart van de Westfjorden in het noordwesten van IJsland, met de ligging van het onderzoeksgebied binnen IJsland.Hoewel er in het verleden al uitgebreid onderzoek werd gedaan naar diatomeeën in IJsland, dateert de laatste grote studie al van vijftig jaar geleden. Deze werd uitgevoerd door de Deense onderzoeker Niels Foged. Sindsdien is onze kennis van deze mini-juweeltjes in onze natuur sterk toegenomen, maken moderne microscopen kleinere details zichtbaar en hebben wetenschappers ontdekt dat sommige soorten die vroeger als één soort werden beschouwd, in werkelijkheid uit meerdere verschillende soorten bestaan. Bovendien waren de Westfjorden een blinde vlek in Fogeds historische studie. Dit maakte de interesse in de kiezelwieren die in dit gebied voorkomen, alleen maar groter.

 

Het uitgangspunt in mijn masterstudie was om een zo volledig mogelijk beeld te krijgen van de diatomeeëndiversiteit in de Westfjorden. Welke soorten vond je onder welke omstandigheden? Wie deelt zijn habitat met wie? En zouden er ook unieke soorten in het gebied voorkomen? Om dit uit te zoeken, werden meer dan 60 monsters verzameld uit uiteenlopende habitats. Naast rivieren, meren en watervallen onderzocht ik ook vochtige mossen waarin heel typische diatomeeëngemeenschappen kunnen leven. Zo kreeg ik een inkijk in de grote verscheidenheid aan leefomgevingen die de regio rijk is.

Het onderzoeken van kiezelwieren in mossen bleek bijzonder interessant. Kiezelwieren hebben een waterige omgeving nodig en worden dus bij uitstek in het water van meren en rivieren gevonden. Maar toch bestaan er ook soorten die uitstekend overleven tussen vochtige moskussens, waardoor deze kleine leefgebieden een unieke omgeving vormen die je nooit kan aantreffen in de omliggende rivieren of meren. En dat bleek ook uit de resultaten van mijn verdere analyses.

 

Eenmaal terug in het labo begon het echte speurwerk. Met behulp van een lichtmicroscoop werd elke diatomee zorgvuldig geanalyseerd en vergeleken met wetenschappelijke literatuur om haar op naam te krijgen. Dat bleek meer dan eens een enorme uitdaging, omdat veel diatomeeën op het eerste gezicht sterk op elkaar lijken en slechts in minuscule details van elkaar verschillen. Om die details zichtbaar te maken, werden sommige individuen onderzocht met een rasterelektronenmicroscoop, die zelfs de kleinste details onthulde. Op die manier slagen wetenschappers erin om soorten te onderscheiden die vroeger vaak over het hoofd werden gezien.

 

Een onverwachte schat aan biodiversiteit

De resultaten overtroffen de stoutste verwachtingen. Hoewel ‘slechts’ 62 monsters werden onderzocht, vond ik maar liefst 403 verschillende soorten kiezelwieren, wat er duidelijk op wijst dat zelfs deze afgelegen regio een opmerkelijk rijke en gevarieerde flora van diatomeeën bevat. Bovendien toonden mijn resultaten ook aan dat er nog veel te ontdekken valt over deze kleine organismen. Meer dan een kwart van de onderzochte soorten kon ik niet op naam brengen, ondanks de meters boeken, de expertise van mijn begeleiders en de state-of-the-art apparatuur waarmee ik kon werken. Dit onderstreept nog maar eens hoe onvolledig onze kennis van deze verborgen biodiversiteit blijft. Vooral omdat extrapolaties op basis van mijn resultaten aan het licht brachten dat de werkelijke biodiversiteit van de Westfjorden waarschijnlijk nog groter is dan waargenomen in mijn studie. 

 

Een andere opvallende vaststelling was de grote zeldzaamheid van veel soorten. Meer dan de helft van de aangetroffen diatomeeën werd slechts in een handvol monsters teruggevonden. Kiezelwieren stellen dus duidelijk zeer specifieke eisen aan hun leefomgeving! Sommige kwamen uitsluitend voor in een bepaalde waterval, één enkele rivier of slechts enkele mospartijen, terwijl ze ontbraken in op het eerste gezicht vergelijkbare biotopen. Deze opmerkelijke verscheidenheid aan gespecialiseerde soorten benadrukt eens te meer hoe gevarieerd de leefomstandigheden in de Westfjorden wel zijn voor diatomeeën. Omdat veel soorten hun eigen milieuvoorkeuren hebben, wezen mijn resultaten er ook op dat er in de Westfjorden specifieke diatomeeëngemeenschappen voorkwamen, met soortensamenstellingen die sterk verschilden tussen de onderzochte habitats. Elke leefomgeving bleek haar eigen karakteristieke diatomeeëngemeenschap te hebben. Soorten die veel voorkwamen in snelstromende rivieren werden nauwelijks of helemaal niet teruggevonden in stilstaande poeltjes en meren. Zelfs op vochtige mossen leefden soorten die elders in de studie nauwelijks werden aangetroffen. 

 

En bijzondere soorten? Die heb ik ook gevonden. Een van mijn meest opmerkelijke ontdekkingen was de identificatie van een soort die volledig nieuw voor de wetenschap bleek te zijn en die ik mee de naam Planothidium islandicum mocht geven, een verwijzing naar IJsland, waar ze werd gevonden. De beschrijving van deze nieuwe soort toont aan dat zelfs in Europa, en in een relatief toegankelijk land als IJsland, een nog onbekende biodiversiteit verborgen kan zitten.

Hoewel deze studie al meer dan 400 soorten aan het licht bracht, suggereren de resultaten dat de diatomeeënflora van de Westfjorden nog lang niet volledig in kaart is gebracht en verder onderzoek zal nodig zijn om deze verborgen diversiteit verder te ontdekken. De resultaten dragen bij aan een betere kennis van de biodiversiteit in subarctische gebieden. Daarom is deze studie niet alleen een belangrijke aanvulling op onze kennis van de IJslandse natuur, maar biedt ze ook een waardevolle basis voor toekomstig diatomeeënonderzoek. De verborgen wereld in een druppel water is een beetje minder verborgen gebleken maar blijkt toch nog veel rijker en complexer dan op het eerste gezicht gedacht.
