Stel je voor dat het ontwikkelen van een medicijn tegen Alzheimer geen decennia meer duurt, maar slechts een paar weken. Of dat we het weer feilloos kunnen voorspellen, files verminderen en cyberveiligheid verbeteren. Kwantumcomputers beloven problemen op te lossen waar klassieke supercomputers op vastlopen. Maar die revolutie staat of valt bij het kunnen 'horen' van hun bouwstenen, de qubits. Om hun ultrazachte signalen te kunnen opvangen, werkte ik in mijn onderzoek aan een nieuw type versterker, geoptimaliseerd voor extreem lage temperaturen.

Computers voeren berekeningen uit met behulp van bits, 0 of 1. Kwantumcomputers gebruiken daarentegen 'qubits', die tegelijkertijd 0, 1 of een combinatie van beide kunnen zijn. Hierdoor kunnen kwantumcomputers veel mogelijkheden tegelijk testen in slechts één berekening. Zo lossen ze bepaalde problemen sneller op dan klassieke computers. Voordat we kwantumcomputers in de praktijk kunnen inzetten, moeten we de toestand van deze qubits nauwkeurig kunnen controleren en meten. Vanwege de extreme fragiliteit van qubits, vormt dit een grote uitdaging. Zelfs de kleinste hoeveelheid energie kan hen verstoren en laten vervallen tot een klassieke 0- of 1-toestand, waardoor hun rekenvoordeel ten opzichte van een normale computer verdwijnt. Om dit te voorkomen is een omgeving nodig waarin de externe energie tot een absoluut minimum wordt beperkt. Ter vergelijking, één enkel qubit-signaal is duizend keer zwakker dan de omgevingsruis die bij kamertemperatuur permanent aanwezig is.

De omgevingsruis is minimaal bij extreem koude temperaturen, ook wel cryogene temperaturen genoemd. Om de qubits stabiel te houden, worden ze daarom gekoeld tot -273°C. Het grootste deel van de koperkleurige cilinder, die kenmerkend is voor kwantumcomputers, heeft als functie om deze koude temperatuur te bereiken en behouden. Problematisch is dat conventionele signaal-versterkers onbruikbaar zijn in dit koude regime. Ze produceren te veel warmte en genereren zelfs extra ruis, waardoor het zwakke qubit-signaal verloren gaat. De ontwikkeling van een alternatieve versterker die toch optimaal functioneert in deze uitzonderlijk koude omstandigheden is daarom cruciaal.
Het tekort schieten van conventionele versterkers motiveert de zoektocht naar een alternatieve aanpak: parametrische versterking. Denk aan een kind op een schommel. Je kunt de schommel in beweging brengen door een duwtje van buitenaf, maar ook door op de juiste momenten je benen te buigen en te strekken. Dit verandert het systeem precies op de juiste momenten, waardoor de beweging toeneemt. Op dezelfde manier is parametrische versterking gebaseerd op het periodiek veranderen van een eigenschap van het systeem, een zogenaamde 'niet-lineariteit'. In dit onderzoek wordt een elektrisch veld toegepast op een dunne laag van het materiaal strontiumtitanaat (SrTiO3). De periodieke respons die hierdoor ontstaat, zal de gewenste versterking opleveren.
Al decennialang bestaan er verschillende typen cryogene versterkers. Het grote probleem is echter dat deze niet opschaalbaar zijn en daardoor ongeschikt voor massaal gebruik in kwantumcomputers. Onderzoeksgroepen wereldwijd zoeken dan ook al jaren naar een betrouwbaar alternatief. Eerdere bevindingen binnen onze onderzoeksgroep bij imec wezen het materiaal strontiumtitanaat aan als goede kandidaat. De verwachting was dat een dunne laag van dit materiaal, juist bij extreem lage temperaturen, een krachtige niet-lineaire respons vertoont in het frequentiedomein waarin qubits signalen uitzenden. Dat was echter nog niet experimenteel aangetoond en dat is precies wat ik in mijn thesis heb gedaan. Ik ontwikkelde een methode waarmee ik die respons kon meten en zo de vermoedens van onze onderzoeksgroep kon bevestigen. Op basis van deze resultaten ontwierp ik een versterker waarvan de theoretische modellen zeer veelbelovend zijn. Dat betekent nog niet dat er morgen een kant-en-klare opschaalbare versterker op de markt is, maar mijn onderzoek is wel een stapje vooruit in een mondiale zoektocht naar een werkende kwantumcomputer. Het geeft enorm veel voldoening om een kleine bijdrage te kunnen leveren aan zo’n cultuuroverstijgend onderzoek naar een wereldveranderende technologie.
Kwantumcomputers zullen miljoenen qubits tegelijk manipuleren en uitlezen.
In vervolgonderzoek zal het voorgestelde ontwerp grondig worden getest, waarbij zowel de materiaaleigenschappen van strontiumtitanaat als de architectuur van het ontwerp verder zullen worden geoptimaliseerd. Dit kan op termijn de weg vrijmaken voor grootschalige toepassingen, onmisbaar voor de uiteindelijke kwantumcomputer, die miljoenen qubits tegelijkertijd moet kunnen manipuleren en uitlezen.
