Vandaag groeien bijna drie op de tien basisschoolkinderen in Vlaanderen en Brussel op met een andere thuistaal dan het Nederlands. Deze toenemende talige diversiteit stelt logopedisten voor een belangrijke uitdaging. Neem bijvoorbeeld Sofia, zij spreekt thuis Roemeens en op school Nederlands. Wanneer haar Nederlands nog niet zo sterk is, stelt zich de cruciale vraag: heeft zij een taalontwikkelingsstoornis (TOS) waardoor zij moeite heeft met het leren van taal of heeft ze gewoonweg meer tijd nodig omdat ze gelijktijdig twee talen aan het leren is. Het antwoord is minder eenvoudig dan men zou denken.
Meertalige kinderen met een typische taalontwikkeling maken gelijkaardige taalfouten als eentalige kinderen met TOS. Bovendien zijn de meeste taaltesten en bijhorende normeringsgegevens waar logopedisten vandaag op steunen, ontwikkeld voor eentalige kinderen. Een tweetalig kind beoordelen aan de hand van deze eentalige normeringsgegevens is zoals meten met een meetlat waarvan de schaalverdeling niet klopt: de meting levert geen betrouwbaar resultaat op. Je kan immers een kind dat meerdere talen tegelijk leert niet zomaar vergelijken met een kind dat slechts één taal leert. Dit stelt logopedisten voor een complexe diagnostische uitdaging, terwijl handvaten om die aan te pakken nog ontbreken. Het risico op een verkeerde of gemiste diagnose neemt bijgevolg toe.
Om logopedisten meer houvast te bieden tijdens taaldiagnostiek bij tweetalige kinderen tussen vijf en acht jaar werd het Protocol Identificatie Tweetalige Taalontwikkelingsstoornis en Ontwikkelingsdysfasie (PITTO) ontwikkeld. Het PITTO, een testcombinatie waarmee TOS op een snelle en betrouwbare wijze geïdentificeerd kan worden, bestaat uit vier testen: een zinsherhalingstaak, een begripstaak voor taalkundige concepten, een taaluniversele non-woordherhalingstaak en een oudervragenlijst over de moedertaalontwikkeling. Echter, er ontbreekt nog een cruciaal puzzelstuk om het PITTO klinisch hanteerbaar te maken: een meetlat aangepast aan tweetalige kinderen met een drempelwaarde die ons betrouwbaar toont of een tweetalig kind wel of geen TOS heeft. Zonder een drempelwaarde blijft het immers onduidelijk vanaf welke testscore er sprake is van TOS. Vergelijk dit met het meten van iemands lichaamstemperatuur. Vanaf een drempelwaarde van 38°C spreken we van koorts. Zonder die drempelwaarde zou een lichaamstemperatuur van 38°C op zich weinig betekenis hebben.
De drempelwaarde vastleggen is geen evidente zoektocht. Een kind is immers complexer dan één score. Neem opnieuw het voorbeeld van Sofia, zij groeit op in een gezin met twee hoogopgeleide ouders en leert van jongs af aan zowel Roemeens als Nederlands. Daarnaast is er Adam, een oudere jongen op Sofia’s school. Zijn ouders gingen na het middelbaar onderwijs meteen aan het werk. Hij woont inmiddels twee jaar in Vlaanderen, spreekt thuis Arabisch en komt enkel op school in aanraking met het Nederlands. Dit illustreert dat de tweetalige populatie erg divers is. Er kan niet gesproken worden van hét tweetalige kind; elk tweetalig kind heeft een uniek taalverhaal. Het taalniveau dat je kan verwachten bij een kind hangt niet alleen af van de leeftijd, maar ook van andere factoren: de leeftijd waarop het kind voor het eerst met het Nederlands in contact komt (taalverwervingsleeftijd), de hoeveelheid Nederlands dat het dagelijks hoort en spreekt, en de socio-economische context.
Eerlijke taaldiagnostiek vraagt dat we de tweetalige diversiteit erkennen bij het ontwikkelen van de drempelwaarden voor het PITTO. Wij onderzochten welke factoren de scores op de PITTO-testen beïnvloeden. Deze informatie vormde het uitgangspunt voor het ontwikkelen van drempelwaarden waarin de context van het kind verankerd zit. We maakten hiervoor gebruik van eerder verzamelde gegevens en vulden deze aan met nieuwe data van tweetalige kinderen tussen vijf en acht jaar.

Onze resultaten bevestigen dat er achter een testscore meer schuilgaat dan een getal. Er zit een verhaal achter. Leeftijd, socio-economische status en de taalverwervingsleeftijd beïnvloeden de score op verschillende PITTO-testen. Voornamelijk de zinsherhalings- en begripstaak blijken gevoelig voor deze factoren. Een lagere score hoeft dus niet automatisch te betekenen dat er sprake is van TOS; we moeten ook de invloed van deze factoren in acht nemen. Eénzelfde score kan voor het ene kind binnen de verwachtingen vallen, terwijl deze voor een ander kind aanleiding geeft tot uitgebreider taalonderzoek.
Dit brengt ons bij een volgende uitdaging: hoe vertaal je deze diversiteit naar eerlijke drempelwaarden? Er is te veel diversiteit om slechts één drempelwaarde voor de gehele tweetalige doelgroep te hanteren. We kunnen niet simpelweg uitgaan van één drempelwaarde voor alle tweetalige kinderen, zoals we dat wel doen bij bijvoorbeeld lichaamstemperatuur.
We ontwikkelden voor twee taken, de zinsherhalings- en begripstaak, drempelwaarden die meegroeien met de leeftijd van het kind. We reiken bovendien voor deze twee taken ook een correctie van de score voor de verwervingsleeftijd van het Nederlands aan. Voor de overige twee testen, de non-woordherhalingstaak en de oudervragenlijst over de moedertaal, doen we suggestie tot één drempelwaarde. Hoewel we de diversiteit van tweetalige kinderen zo nauwkeurig mogelijk willen meenemen in het opstellen van eerlijke drempelwaarden, bleek het praktisch niet haalbaar om elke beïnvloedende factor in rekening te brengen. De voorgestelde drempelwaarden vormen een gebalanceerd evenwicht tussen precisie en gebruiksvriendelijkheid.

In een samenleving waarin tweetaligheid niet langer een uitzondering is, moet ook de taaldiagnostiek mee evolueren. Het PITTO biedt logopedisten een concreet kader voor het identificeren van TOS bij tweetalige kinderen. Onze masterproef benadrukt dat testresultaten pas betekenis krijgen wanneer ze geïnterpreteerd worden binnen het unieke verhaal van het kind. De voorgestelde drempelwaarden reiken hiervoor concrete handvaten aan omdat ze rekening houden met de tweetalige taalontwikkeling. Hoewel verdere verfijning nodig blijft, vormen de huidige bevindingen een belangrijke stap naar een eerlijke diagnose. Deze begint niet met één meetlat voor iedereen, maar met aandacht voor het unieke verhaal van elk kind.
