Proper water lijkt vanzelfsprekend, maar dat is het niet. Ook wanneer water helder oogt, kunnen er stoffen in aanwezig zijn die we niet met het blote oog zien. Denk aan resten van geneesmiddelen, pesticiden, verzorgingsproducten en PFAS. Vooral PFAS krijgen de laatste jaren veel aandacht. Deze stoffen worden vaak “forever chemicals” genoemd, omdat ze zeer moeilijk afbreken en daardoor lang in het milieu aanwezig kunnen blijven.
PFAS is geen naam voor één stof, maar voor een grote groep chemische verbindingen. Eén daarvan is PFOA, een historisch veelgebruikte PFAS-verbinding die in mijn masterproef werd onderzocht. Daarnaast werkte ik ook met ciprofloxacine, een veelgebruikt antibioticum voor mens en dier. Dat antibioticum wordt niet altijd volledig verwijderd in klassieke waterzuiveringsprocessen. Resten ervan kunnen zo in het milieu terechtkomen en mogelijk bijdragen aan ecologische risico’s, zoals de toenemende antibioticaresistentie.
De uitdaging is dus niet alleen om zulke stoffen uit water te halen, maar vooral om ze echt af te breken. Dat is bij PFAS bijzonder moeilijk. In deze moleculen zitten zeer sterke bindingen tussen koolstof en fluor. Je kan die bindingen zien als een soort stevig slot dat moeilijk open te krijgen is. Daardoor zijn veel klassieke zuiveringstechnieken niet krachtig genoeg om PFAS volledig af te breken.
In mijn masterproef onderzocht ik daarom een andere aanpak: water behandelen met ultrasone golven, een oxidant en een katalysator. Ultrasone golven of ultrasound, is geluid met een frequentie die hoger ligt dan wat mensen kunnen horen. Wanneer zulke golven door water bewegen, ontstaan microscopisch kleine belletjes. Die belletjes groeien en klappen daarna met grote kracht in elkaar. Dat proces heet cavitatie.
Op het niveau van zo’n imploderend belletje ontstaan heel kort extreme omstandigheden. Je kan het zien als kleine hotspots in het water. Die kunnen helpen om reacties op gang te brengen die onder normale omstandigheden veel moeilijker verlopen. Ultrasound alleen is meestal niet genoeg, daarom combineerde ik het met persulfaat. Dat is een oxidant: een stof die, wanneer ze geactiveerd wordt, zeer reactieve deeltjes kan vormen die vervuiling kunnen aanvallen.
Om die activatie te verbeteren, testte ik ook katalysatoren. Een katalysator helpt een reactie sneller of efficiënter verlopen zonder zelf volledig opgebruikt te worden. In totaal maakte en onderzocht ik drie katalysatoren: koper(II)oxide, magnetiet en een combinatie van beide. Magnetiet kwam daaruit als de meest interessante keuze. Het is een magnetisch ijzermineraal dat persulfaat goed kon activeren en bovendien praktisch is, omdat het na behandeling met een magneet uit het water kan worden gehaald.
Daarna onderzocht ik onder welke omstandigheden het systeem met ultrasound, persulfaat en magnetiet het best werkte. Ik varieerde onder meer de zuurtegraad van het water, de hoeveelheid magnetiet en de hoeveelheid persulfaat. Voor ciprofloxacine bleek vooral de zuurtegraad belangrijk. Onder zure omstandigheden werd meer dan 80% van het antibioticum verwijderd binnen één uur. Ook bij neutrale pH werd een hoge verwijdering gemeten. Dat is interessant, omdat echte afvalwaterstromen meestal niet sterk zuur zijn.
Toch moet voorzichtig worden omgedaan met het woord “verwijderd”. Wanneer een stof niet meer wordt teruggevonden in de meting, betekent dat niet automatisch dat ze volledig verdwenen is. Ze kan ook omgezet zijn in kleinere tussenproducten. Daarom keek ik niet alleen naar hoeveel ciprofloxacine overbleef, maar ook naar aanwijzingen dat de stof verder werd afgebroken. De beste onderzochte conditie gaf niet alleen een hoge verwijdering, maar ook de sterkste aanwijzingen voor verdere afbraak.
Daarna paste ik hetzelfde systeem toe op PFOA. Daar werd meteen duidelijk waarom PFAS zo berucht zijn. PFOA was veel moeilijker aan te pakken dan ciprofloxacine. De hoogste gemiddelde verwijdering bedroeg ongeveer 50%, maar de resultaten vertoonden een grotere spreiding. Dat toont aan dat een techniek die veelbelovend is voor een antibioticum niet automatisch sterk genoeg is voor PFAS. Forever chemicals vragen robuustere behandelingen en blijven daardoor een groot wetenschappelijk en maatschappelijk vraagstuk.
Ik onderzocht ook wat er gebeurt wanneer het water meer lijkt op echt afvalwater. In echt water zit namelijk niet alleen de doelverontreiniging, maar ook allerlei andere stoffen. Sommige daarvan kunnen de behandeling verstoren. In mijn experimenten hadden bepaalde waterbestanddelen een duidelijke negatieve invloed op de verwijdering van ciprofloxacine. Dat is belangrijk, want een systeem dat goed werkt in zuiver laboratoriumwater moet uiteindelijk ook kunnen presteren in complexere waterstromen.
Ook het hergebruik van magnetiet werd onderzocht. Dat is belangrijk voor de praktische toepassing: een katalysator die je telkens opnieuw moet vervangen, is minder aantrekkelijk. Magnetiet bleef meerdere cycli actief, maar de werking nam wel af. Dat kwam waarschijnlijk onder meer doordat geen echte regeneratiestap werd toegepast tussen de cycli. In vervolgonderzoek zou dus bekeken moeten worden hoe magnetiet beter kan worden gereinigd, gestabiliseerd of opnieuw geactiveerd.
Mijn onderzoek levert geen kant-en-klare oplossing voor alle watervervuiling, daarvoor zijn de uitdagingen nog te groot. Vooral PFAS moeten vollediger worden afgebroken, afbraakproducten moeten beter worden geïdentificeerd en het energieverbruik van ultrasound blijft een belangrijk aandachtspunt. Toch toont deze studie dat de combinatie van ultrasoon geluid, persulfaat en magnetiet een veelbelovende piste is voor de behandeling van hardnekkige verontreinigingen.
Misschien ligt een deel van de toekomstige waterzuivering dus niet alleen in grotere filters of extra zuiveringsstappen, maar ook in iets wat we niet kunnen horen: kleine imploderende belletjes die op microschaal hardnekkige vervuiling aanvallen.
