Waarom tekeningen werken: geadopteerden aan het woord in nieuwe studie

In een recente studie werd onderzocht hoe het gebruik van tekeningen kan bijdragen aan inclusievere berichtgeving. Wat blijkt? ‘Tekeningen zijn een uiterst geschikte tool om gevoelige thema’s onder de aandacht te brengen’, aldus Emma Van den Hoof, onderzoekster aan de KU Leuven.

Gevoelige thema’s zoals adoptie blijven een vaste waarde in de media. Dat bleek opnieuw dit najaar, toen de VRT een nieuw televisieformat aankondigde waarin bekende Vlamingen samen met experts op zoek gaan naar vermiste familieleden. De aankondiging leidde tot felle kritiek vanuit de adoptiecommunity. Volgens hen is het hoog tijd dat het zoeken naar familieleden ernstig wordt genomen en niet langer als entertainment wordt verkocht. ‘We hebben geen nood aan emo-tv, maar aan een beleid dat geadopteerden beschermt en ondersteunt’, klinkt het scherp.
Tekeningen boven tekst
Die kritiek sluit aan bij recent onderzoek aan de KU Leuven, waarin een alternatieve manier van berichtgeving over gevoelige thema’s werd onderzocht. In het kader van dat onderzoek sprak onderzoekster Emma Van den Hoof met twaalf volwassen geadopteerden over hun adoptie en de impact ervan op hun leven. Thema’s als identiteit, verlies en familiebanden stonden daarbij centraal. In plaats van deze verhalen enkel in tekst weer te geven, vertaalde Van den Hoof de interviews naar tekeningen, telkens vergezeld van een quote uit het gesprek.
Anonimiteit en nuance
Volgens Van den Hoof bieden tekeningen een belangrijk voordeel bij het vertellen van gevoelige verhalen. ‘Illustratie laat toe om emoties te tonen zonder ze vast te pinnen op één gezicht of één moment’, zegt ze. ‘Dat creëert afstand én herkenning tegelijk.’ In tegenstelling tot televisiebeelden, die vaak expliciet en confronterend zijn, laten tekeningen ruimte voor interpretatie en nuance. Ze maken het mogelijk om ervaringen te tonen die moeilijk te vatten zijn in woorden of realistische beelden. Bovendien maken illustraties anonimiteit mogelijk, iets wat met foto’s veel moeilijker is. Al merkt de KU Leuven-onderzoekster hierbij wel op dat totale anonimiteit niet altijd de beste optie is: ‘Verschillende geadopteerden gaven aan het belangrijk te vinden hun eigen naam te zien en geconfronteerd te worden met hun eigen woorden. Dat maakte het voor hen net persoonlijker’, stelt ze.
Co-auteurschap
Een cruciaal element in het onderzoek was participatie. De tekeningen werden telkens opnieuw voorgelegd aan de geadopteerden, die feedback gaven op wat ze herkenden, misten of anders wilden zien. ‘Door hen actief te betrekken bij het tekenproces, ontstond een vorm van gedeeld auteurschap’, aldus Van den Hoof. ‘Het zorgde ervoor dat het eindresultaat niet alleen mijn interpretatie was, maar een weergave waar de deelnemers zich in konden vinden.’ Enkele geadopteerden vertelden hoe de tekeningen zowel pakkend als confronterend waren: ‘Ik vond dat super confronterend om die tekeningen te zien maar tegelijk ook helend. Ik begon precies opnieuw na te denken over mijn eigen adoptie en gevoelens.’
Betekent dit dat foto’s of andere beeldvormen volledig uit den boze zijn? ‘Nee, zo ver zijn we nog niet’, nuanceert Van den Hoof. ‘Maar het loont wel om deze manier van vertellen ernstig te nemen en verder te onderzoeken. In een medialandschap waarin persoonlijke verhalen steeds vaker worden geformatteerd, tonen tekeningen dat het ook anders kan.’
