Effects of E-commerce on the Value Chain: Conquering the Last Mile

E-commerce : de logistieke uitdaging van de 21e eeuw

Met 24% van de Belgen die maandelijks online aankopen doen, is de online verkoop voor steeds meer handelaars belangrijk geworden. De e-commerce markt is in België goed zijn voor zo’n twee miljard euro in 2014. Maar dit brengt heel wat logistieke problemen mee voor de handelaar: eens een product online gekocht is, hoe moet dit op een kosten-efficiënte manier tot bij de klant raken?

Deze vraag is niet zo eenvoudig en eenduidig te beantwoorden. De logistieke kostprijs van de levering hangt nu ook eenmaal af van de service die de handelaar wilt leveren. Thuislevering heeft een grotere kost dan levering in zijn winkel of een ander ophaalpunt. Bovendien verschilt de e-commerce visie van handelaar tot handelaar. Online boeken bestellen kan bijvoorbeeld gemakkelijk en gratis bij De Standaard Boekhandel, zolang je ze maar ophaalt in één van hun winkels. Thuislevering kan ook, mits je de verzendkosten zelf betaalt. Bij de online handelaar bol.com heb je gratis thuislevering voor hetzelfde product, op voorwaarde dat de totale waarde van het order groot genoeg is. In zijn eindwerk geeft Arne Somers, handelsingenieur KU Leuven, inzicht in het kostenplaatje van e-commerce logistiek en hoe het ook winstgevend kan.

Levering aan huis is één van de moeilijkste logistieke oefeningen die vele bedrijven moeten maken. Per bezorgingroute moeten er nu eenmaal genoeg orders kunnen geleverd worden om de kosten laag genoeg te houden. Dit betekent dat er een hoge dichtheid van online kopers moet zijn om rendabel te kunnen opereren. Voeg hierbij nog eens aan toe dat er in vele moderne gezinnen overdag niemand thuis is om het product in ontvangst te nemen, en de mogeljkheid van de klant om zijn gekochte producten terug te zenden (voor sommige producten loopt dit op tot meer dan 50%) en je begrijpt al vlug waarom e-commerce logistiek een complexe en dure aangelegenheid is

Vaak wordt daarom beroep gedaan op gespecialiseerde bedrijven die de e-commerce logistiek verzorgen. Deze logistieke bedrijven kunnen dankzij het groeperen van bestellingen een hogere leveringsdichtheid behalen, waardoor ze schaalvoordelen kunnen bekomen en aan een lagere kost kunnen leveren dan mogelijk zou zijn voor de retailers. Deze logistieke bedrijven doen overigens ook alle moeite om hun kosten laag te houden en komen hierbij vaak met innovatieve ideeën. Zo kun je bijvoorbeeld bij thuislevering kiezen om het order ‘bij de buren’ of ‘in het tuinhuis’ te laten leggen als je niet thuis bent. Iets dat zowel de klant tijd bespaart en de leverancier een tweede trip.

Anderen opteren om de thuislevering te vervangen door een ophaalpunt dat gemakkelijk is te bereiken voor de klant. Logistiek dienstverlener Kiala heeft meerdere bemande ophaalpunten in België en Bpost heeft dit jaar elektronische lockers geïnstalleerd op diverse publieke plaatsen zoals treinstations. Op deze manier kunnen de pakjes in bulk geleverd worden tijdens de dag, waarna de pendelende klant zijn pakje meepakt op de terugweg naar huis. Een kleine moeite voor de klant, maar een grote kostenbesparing voor de leverancier. Deze moet nu niet meer leveren bij de Belgen die graag verspreid wonen, maar kan zijn pakjes in bulk naar een ophaalpunt brengen. Deze lockers van Bpost kunnen ook voor andere dingen gebruikt worden, zoals het verzenden van pakketjes. Op deze manier kan Bpost aan de anders lege terugtocht toch nog een meerwaarde geven. Amazon heeft momenteel een proefproject lopen waar de thuislevering voor kleine goederen (tot 1kg) gebeurt met kleine ombemande vliegtuigjes of drones.

E-commerce is de ultieme logistieke uitdaging, dit goed organiseren zal cruciaal blijken voor de winst, groei en zelfs het voortbestaan van bedrijven uit diverse sectoren.
