Wind Loading on Tensile Surface Structures – Experimental Approach

Veiligheid van tentzeilconstructies op festivals !?

Nood aan Europese norm inzake windbelasting voor tijdelijke constructies.

Waarom sneuvelen festivaltenten onder windbelasting? Hoe zit het met de veiligheid van deze constructies? Vragen die menig festivalganger of ouder zich ongetwijfeld stelt. Aanleiding tot deze bezorgdheid zijn de recente gebeurtenissen op Pukkelpop edities 2011 en 2014. Het blijft echter niet bij deze twee gevallen. Wereldwijd zijn er reeds verschillende ongelukken met tentzeilconstructies geregistreerd.

Door de recente opmars in het gebruik van tentzeilconstructies is er een achterstand op het vlak van expertise. Vooral op het gebied van windanalyse is er nood aan het accuraat modelleren van windbelastingen. De windbelasting op dergelijke membraanstructuren is een complex probleem. Vergeleken met conventionele gebouwtypes zijn deze structuren uiterst gevoelig voor wind als gevolg van de lage verhouding van het eigengewicht t.o.v. de belasting. De huidige normen inzake windbelasting geven bovengrenzen aan voor de conventionele constructies, maar de onzekerheid neemt toe wanneer de gebouwconfiguratie hiervan afwijkt. Bovendien worden membraanstructuren aangewend in een grote verscheidenheid aan vormen, afmetingen en verhoudingen, waardoor de structurele ingenieurs genoodzaakt zijn om vereenvoudigende veronderstellingen en benaderingen door te voeren tijdens de berekening onder windbelasting. Deze aannames leiden onlosmakelijk tot over- of onderdimensionering van de structuren. Overdimensionering heeft vooral impact op het economische aspect. De ingenieur van vandaag moet streven naar duurzaamheid en een optimaal gebruik van materialen door het beperken van een overmatige consumptie van grondstoffen. Onderdimensionering anderzijds brengt de veiligheid en het normale gebruik van de structuren in gevaar. Het gebrek aan kennis over deze relatief jonge constructies heeft wereldwijd reeds geleid tot een aantal incidenten. De afgelopen jaren hebben verschillende membraanstructuren het begeven onder de optredende windbelasting, met economisch en menselijk leed tot gevolg. De meest voorkomende oorzaken voor dit structurele falen kunnen ondergebracht worden in vier categorieën: falen van de membranen door scheuren, falen van de draagstructuur door het buigen van de steunen of het breken van de kabels, falen van de verbindingen tussen membraan en draagstructuur of falen van de funderingen met oplift van de gehele structuur. Merk op dat in de bepaalde gevallen het falen van één enkel element de instorting van de gehele structuur kan veroorzaken. De globale stabiliteit is immers afhankelijk van de interactie tussen alle samenstellende elementen. Tevens kunnen ook niet-destructieve problemen optreden die het gebruik en comfort van de structuren in het gedrang brengen.

GEBREK AAN ACCURATE WINDBELASTINGEN OP DUBBELGEKROMDE OPPERVLAKKEN

De huidige Europese norm inzake windbelasting voor gebouwen (EN 1991-1-4) illustreert drukcoëfficiëntverdelingen voor enkele basisvormen opgebouwd uit vlakke facetten. Aangezien de heersende normen zelfs de meest eenvoudige dubbelgekromde oppervlakken niet beschouwt, wordt de windberekening voor membraanstructuren vaak gebaseerd op benaderingen. Om de veiligheid van de dubbelgekromde tentzeilconstructies onder windbelasting in dezelfde mate te kunnen garanderen als voor de conventionele gebouwtypologieën is een meer precieze windanalyse noodzakelijk. Voor de 'typische' membraangeometrieën (hyperbolische paraboloïden, conische vormen, vormen ondersteund door bogen en golfvormen) zouden drukcoëfficiëntenverdelingen moeten opgemeten en gevalideerd worden. Deze informatie kan de constructeurs alvast toelaten een accuratere windberekening uit te voeren voor de meest voorkomende typologieën. Voor stadia, stations en andere grote constructies blijft het wel noodzakelijk windtunneltesten te doen.

FUNDAMENTEEL ONDERZOEK NAAR DE WINDBELASTING OP NIEUWE MEMBRAANTYPOLOGIEËN

Er is nog veel onderzoek noodzakelijk omtrent windbelastingen op membraanstructuren: gaande van algemene drukcoëfficiëntverdelingen voor de typische membraanvormen, over de verificatie van lokale effecten, tot de complexe analyse van de dynamische respons van deze flexibele constructies. In dit kader geeft de masterproef ‘Wind Loading on Tensile Surface Structures ­– Experimental Approach’ een eerste aanzet tot het bekomen van experimentele windtunneldata voor membraanstructuren, en specifiek voor de windbelasting op hyperbolische paraboloïdedaken en -afdaken. Uit het onderzoek is gebleken dat de windbelasting op membraanstructuren niet eenduidig te vatten is. Zeer kleine variaties in parameters als oriëntatie, hoogte, kromming en detaillering van de membraanrand hebben een aanzienlijke weerslag op de verdeling van de winddruk op de desbetreffende structuur. Tevens dient men rekening te houden met de verschillende toestanden waarin de tenten zich zullen bevinden: open, gesloten, of een tussenopstelling. Elk van de toestanden is immers geassocieerd met een specifieke windstroming rond en bijhorende windbelasting op de structuur. De onderzoeksresultaten hebben aangetoond dat het windontwerp van tentzeilconstructies een nodige, maar ook een zeer delicate materie is. De ontwerper dient vanaf de eerste schets rekening te houden met alle factoren en mogelijke variaties, zeker in het geval van festivaltenten waar de locatie, de oriëntatie en de toestand van de tenten steeds wijzigt. Het is van groot belang in de windberekening al de mogelijke toestanden te beschouwen om de veiligheid te garanderen in elke configuratie.

De behoefte aan nauwkeurige windbelastingsnormen voor tentzeilconstructies werd reeds in verschillende internationale publicaties benadrukt: enerzijds is er de ontoereikendheid van de huidige normen, en anderzijds is er voor de groeiende sector van zowel tijdelijke als creatieve membraanarchitecturen de noodzaak om over correcte winddrukcoëfficiëntverdelingen te beschikken. Het onderzoek naar windbelastingen op de eenvoudige basisvormen vormt een belangrijke startpunt voor een meer algemene Eurocode inzake het ontwerpen van membraanstructuren. Dit onderzoek kan gevoerd worden op basis van verschaalde windtunneltesten, testen op werkelijke grootte in buitensituaties of op basis van numerieke simulaties. De experimenteel verkregen drukcoëfficiëntverdelingen kunnen vervolgens gebruikt worden voor de berekening van windbelastingen op vergelijkbare constructies.
