Onderzoek naar het potentieel van loopsnelheid in automatische systemen voor kreupelheidsdetectie bij melkvee

Kreupele koeien lopen langzamer

Kreupelheid bij melkkoeien is een belangrijk probleem in de moderne melkveesector. Zowel voor de dieren als voor de landbouwer zijn de effecten van kreupelheid sterk negatief. Manuele detectie is mogelijk maar deze aanpak is vaak te tijdrovend en bovendien subjectief. Daarom kan het gebruik van automatische kreupelheidsdetectiemodellen een oplossing zijn. In dit onderzoek werd het potentieel van loopsnelheid als nieuwe variabele in deze modellen onderzocht. Hoewel de loopsnelheid van kreupele koeien significant lager was dan voor gezonde dieren, leidde het gebruik van loopsnelheid in automatische kreupelheidsdetectiemodellen niet tot betere modellen.

De melkveesector is een belangrijk onderdeel van de Vlaamse landbouw. De laatste decennia zijn het aantal gespecialiseerde bedrijven en het aantal dieren in de Vlaamse melkveesector sterk gedaald. Zowel de totale als de individuele melkproductie daarentegen zijn gestegen en ook het gemiddeld aantal dieren per bedrijf is toegenomen. Deze trends zijn gekend als intensifiëring en schaalvergroting en zijn kenmerkend voor de meeste takken van de moderne Vlaamse landbouw. Samen met de toename in individuele melkproductie is ook het voorkomen van kreupelheid sterk gestegen. Deze trend maakt dat kreupelheid een actueel probleem is en de komende jaren nog aan belang zal winnen.

Wat is kreupelheid

Poot- en hoefaandoeningen vormen een belangrijk probleem op moderne melkveebedrijven. In een vroeg stadium blijven de effecten van deze aandoeningen beperkt, maar wanneer ze onbehandeld blijven hinderen ze de koe. Het stappatroon van de koe wijzigt door de pijn die een poot- of hoefaandoening veroorzaakt. Koeien die zich in deze situatie bevinden worden kreupel genoemd. Kreupelheid heeft in de eerste plaats een negatief effect op de gezondheid en het welzijn van de dieren. Daarnaast leidt kreupelheid ook tot economische verliezen voor de melkveehouder. De melkproductie daalt, de reproductie verloopt moeizaam en kreupele koeien worden in het algemeen reeds op jongere leeftijd geslacht. Ook de behandeling van kreupele dieren vormt een extra kost.

Aanpak van het probleem

Om de negatieve effecten zo veel mogelijk te reduceren, is een vroege detectie van het probleem noodzakelijk. Vroeger waren landbouwbedrijven kleiner en gediversifieerder. Elke landbouwer had een nauw contact met zijn dieren en wanneer er ergens een probleem dreigde te ontstaan, kon direct worden ingegrepen. Op moderne landbouwbedrijven is deze aanpak niet langer mogelijk. Manuele systemen voor kreupelheidsdetectie bestaan nog steeds, maar het gebruik van dergelijke systemen is subjectief en tijdrovend. De tijdsdruk op moderne melkveebedrijven is te hoog om een regelmatige evaluatie van de kreupelheidstoestand te maken met behulp van manuele systemen. Daarom zijn automatische kreupelheidsdetectie modellen ontwikkeld die de melkveehouder waarschuwen zodra het probleem zich voordoet. Het aantal variabelen dat in deze modellen wordt gebruikt is groot, maar het potentieel van loopsnelheid als variabele is nog niet onderzocht. Verwacht werd dat kreupelheid de loopsnelheid van melkkoeien negatief zou beïnvloeden en dat het gebruik van loopsnelheid als een extra variabele in automatische modellen de prestaties van deze modellen zou verhogen.

Onderzoek loopsnelheid

Alle data gebruikt in dit onderzoek werden verzameld op een commercieel melkveebedrijf in Arendonk, België. Om het effect van kreupelheid op de loopsnelheid van koeien te onderzoeken, werden manuele en automatische loopsnelheidsmetingen verzameld. Op basis van de manuele metingen werd een significant effect gevonden van kreupelheid op de loopsnelheid. De manuele loopsnelheid bedroeg gemiddeld 1,05 m/s voor de kreupele koeien. Deze waarde was significant lager dan de manuele loopsnelheid van gezonde koeien die gemiddeld 1,29 m/s bedroeg. De betrouwbaarheid van dit resultaat was hoog.

Op basis van de automatische metingen, berekend uit video-opnames, kon niet langer een significant verschil worden teruggevonden. De automatische loopsnelheid was wel lager voor kreupele koeien, maar het verschil was niet significant. Een groot deel van de verklaring ligt in het beperkte gezichtsveld van de gebruikte videocamera.

Ontwikkeling automatische kreupelheidsdetectiemodellen

Om het potentieel van loopsnelheid in automatische kreupelheidsdetectiemodellen te onderzoeken werden tijdreeksen voor drie variabelen verzameld: loopsnelheid, rugkromming en activiteit. Rugkromming en activiteit zijn variabelen waarvan het nut in automatische modellen reeds is aangetoond. In deze studie werden drie types modellen ontwikkeld: statistische modellen, dynamische auto-regressieve modellen en input-output modellen. De modelstructuren werden geoptimaliseerd en de prestaties van de ontwikkelde modellen werden bepaald. De sensitiviteit en de specificiteit werden berekend voor elk model. De meest interessante modellen werden geselecteerd en gevalideerd.

Over het algemeen lag de specificiteit hoger voor modellen die de loopsnelheid gebruikten maar de verschillen bleven beperkt tot maximaal 5%. Het best ontwikkelde model was een statistisch model gebaseerd op rugkromming en loopsnelheid. De specificiteit en sensitiviteit bedroegen 81,6% en 18,3%. Dit was een veelbelovend resultaat voor een statistisch model. De resultaten van de dynamische auto regressieve modellen en de input-output modellen waren echter niet beter dan voor de statistische modellen ten gevolge van praktische beperkingen van de opstelling welke het gebruik van dynamische informatie in de gemeten variabelen beperkten.

In vergelijking met gepubliceerde modellen, bleven de prestaties van de hier ontwikkelde modellen beperkt. Toch kan het, zeker op basis van de significant lagere loopsnelheid van kreupele koeien bij manuele metingen, interessant zijn om de opstelling zoals gebruikt in dit onderzoek aan te passen op een manier die toelaat de dynamische informatie in de variabelen in rekening te brengen. Een camera met een breder gezichtsveld lijkt hier veelbelovend.
