De Iconografie van het Boek Tobit in Westerse en Indische Miniaturen (1400-1600)
Toen ik de tentoonstelling Gläubiges Staunen – Biblische Traditionen in der islamischen Welt in het Pergamonmuseum in Berlijn bezocht tijdens de zomer van 2017, was er één Mogolminiatuur die me opviel. Het museum beschreef de iconografie van deze miniatuur, waarop een engel met een vis is afbeeld, als gebaseerd op de Tobiaslegende. (Fig. 1.). Zoals de titel ervan duidde, ging de tentoonstelling over Bijbelse thema’s in de Islamitische wereld. Het was dus niet erg moeilijk om uit te zoeken dat de iconografie van deze Mogolminiatuur eigenlijk uit het Bijbelboek Tobit afkomstig was. Voor mijn thesis besloot ik het verhaal over hoe deze iconografie in India terecht kwam te reconstrueren, maar tegelijk ook een voorafgaande geschiedenis van de iconografie in Europese miniaturen te schetsen. De bedoeling was dat westerse en oosterse kunst in mijn thesis aan elkaar verbonden werden, iets wat te weinig gedaan wordt in de kunstgeschiedenis.
Het Bijbelboek Tobit is in tegenstelling tot andere apocriefe boeken geen verhaal over heldhaftige hoofdpersonages zoals Judith en Daniel, maar een verhaal over gewone mensen die gered worden door hun geloof in God. Tobit is een Jood die in ballingschap woont, maar nog steeds de regels van God opvolgt. Op een dag wordt hij blind en als hij dan ook nog ruzie met zijn vrouw krijgt, is hij zo wanhopig dat hij aan God vraagt of hij mag sterven. Ondertussen is ook zijn verre familielid Sarah zo verdrietig dat ze God vraagt om haar te laten sterven. Ze is namelijk al zeven keer getrouwd, maar tijdens haar huwelijksnacht wordt haar echtgenoot elke keer vermoord door de demoon Asmodeus die verliefd is op haar. Omdat Tobit denkt dat hij gaat sterven, stuurt hij zijn zoon Tobias op reis naar Media om het geld dat hij ooit bij een neef achterliet op te halen. Tobias vertrekt samen met Azarias die de weg naar Media kent. Azarias is eigenlijk de engel Rafael die zich vermomt als een mens. Samen beleven ze heel wat avonturen. Ze vangen onder andere een vis die Tobias probeert op te slokken en verbranden de lever van de vis tijdens de huwelijksnacht van Sarah en Tobias, iets wat de demoon Asmodeus voor altijd wegjaagt uit de buurt van Sarah. Uiteindelijk keert Tobias veilig, getrouwd en met het geld dat zijn vader in Media achterliet terug naar huis. Hij geneest zijn vader met de overige resten van de vis die hij ving.
Hoewel ik eerst verwachtte dat ik enkel miniaturen die het kleurrijke verhaal afbeelden zou terugvinden in Bijbels, bleek niets minder waar. Mijn zoektocht naar een antwoord op de vraag hoe en in welke westerse manuscripten de iconografie van Tobit een rol speelde, leidde uiteindelijk tot de conclusie dat de iconografie van het Bijbelse verhaal in zelfs in secundaire boeken werd afgebeeld. Het thema werd benut in de context van de typologie – een methode waarbij verhalen uit het Oude Testament een verhaal uit het Nieuwe Testament voorafspiegelen. Personages uit het Bijbelboek Tobit kregen zo een vaste plaats in de Biblia Pauperum, Speculum humanæ salvationis en de Bible moralisée. In boeken voor persoonlijke devotie en kerkboeken werd vooral het beeldthema van Tobias en de engel op weg naar Media populair en op het vlak van secundaire boeken is Tobias te vinden in de Confessio Amantis als een kuise held die dagenlang bidt voordat hij zijn huwelijk consumeert (Fig. 2). Ook in encyclopedische werken dienen de personages uit het Bijbelboek Tobit als voorbeelden van goed gedrag.
Op het einde van de vijftiende en het begin van de zestiende eeuw moesten illuminaties uit handschriften langzaamaan tijd maken voor gedrukte prenten die om economische redenen voor een wijdere verspreiding van iconografische thema’s zorgden. De prentkunst zette in het begin vooral de herkenbare iconografie van manuscripten voort, waaraan het publiek reeds gewoon was. Tobias en de engel op hun weg naar Media is een episode uit het Bijbelboek dat in de veertiende eeuw was uitgebloeid tot een cultus voor Florentijnse handelaars en dat ook heel populair was in de context van persoonlijke devotie. Het thema werd in prenten gegoten door kunstenaars zoals Maerten van Heemskerck (1498-1574) en Georg Pencz (1500-1550). Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat er kostbare middeleeuwse handschriften naar India werden meegenomen, maar in de vorm van gravures die devotionele thema’s uit handschriften nabootsten kwam de iconografie van Tobias en de engel in India terecht via de Jezuïeten die goedkope devotionele prenten meenamen tijdens hun missies aan het hof van de Mogolheerser Akbar (1542-1605). Deze koning was ook geïnteresseerd in andere religies dan de Islam en hoewel de Jezuïeten hem niet konden bekeren tot het Christendom, zouden de prenten die ze meenamen wel voor een artistieke transformatie zorgen in het atelier van zijn hofhouding. Er bestaan Indische miniaturen die duidelijk geïnspireerd zijn op gravures die de engel Rafael en Tobias met de vis afbeelden, maar toch zijn Mogolminiaturen vaak assemblages van meer dan een iconografie. De engel Rafael werd zo bijvoorbeeld omgetoverd in een Indische vrouw en Tobias in een kleine, halfnaakte putto met vleugels.
In de literatuur over het iconografische thema in de Indische miniatuurkunst wordt over het algemeen aangenomen dat zowat elke miniatuur die een engel met een vis of twee personen waarvan er één vis vasthoudt afbeeld een Indische interpretatie is van Tobias met de vis of de engel Rafael en Tobias met de vis. Er wordt in deze literatuur weinig rekening gehouden met de Perzische beeldcultuur waarop de Mogolkunst vaak geïnspireerd is en waarin er een verhaal over een engel bestaat die wordt afgebeeld met een vis. Het tweede deel van mijn thesis tracht zich tegen deze eenzijdige visie af te zetten en concludeert dat beelden die een engel met een vis vasthouden eerder van de iconografie van de engel Jibrail afkomstig zijn, terwijl beelden van een personage met een kind en een vis dan wel weer afkomstig zijn het Bijbelboek Tobit. De lezer van deze thesis maakt dus samen met de iconografie van Tobias een wonderbaarlijke reis vanuit Europa tot in Mogol-India, waarin kritische insteken de leidraad zijn.
