Engels is geen 'must'

“Als je uitsluitend Engelse termen gebruikt, dan ben je niet goed bezig als journalist”, zegt Lars Godeau, eindredacteur bij Het Nieuwsblad. Uit een onderzoek van de KU Leuven blijkt dat de Vlaamse voetbalmedia in twee op de zeven gevallen een Engelse term gebruiken. “Het Engels is geen must, het is een toevoeging.”

Uit een onderzoek van de KU Leuven blijkt dat de Vlaamse voetbalmedia in 28,72% van de gevallen een voetbalconcept in het Engels uitdrukken. Dat is een van de conclusies van het onderzoek van Quinten Hiel, een masterstudent journalistiek die tussen november 2018 en maart 2019 twintig wedstrijden uit de Belgische competitie analyseerde. “Vlaamse voetbalmedia gebruiken inderdaad Engels en de manier waarop ze dat doen, komt duidelijk overeen.”

Uniformiteit

Hiel onderzocht de uniformiteit – zeg maar de overeenkomst – tussen het gebruik van Engels in de live commentaar, studioanalyse en de krant.

Hij stelde daarom twintig profielen van voetbalconcepten op en analyseerde twintig wedstrijden. “Ik ben zot van voetbal, maar wanneer voetbal schoolwerk wordt, snak je toch naar dat laatste fluitsignaal”, blikt Hiel terug op zijn dataverzameling.

“M’n vrienden lachten me weleens uit als ik zei dat voetbal kijken zwaar kan zijn, tot we samen een wedstrijd bekeken en ik luidop de woorden uit m’n corpus telde. Na vijf minuten smeekten ze me al om op te houden.”  

Hiel keek naar de frequentie van 104 voetbaltermen: 20 Engelse en 84 Nederlandse. Hij luisterde naar vier commentatoren van Play Sports, vijftien studiogasten in Studio Live en analyseerde meer dan honderd krantenartikels uit Het Nieuwsblad.

Enthousiaste commentator

Op basis van dat corpus stelde hij enkele grafieken en tabellen samen die hij meenam naar  zijn interviews met Lars Godeau van Het Nieuwsblad, commentator Philippe Crols en  analist Marc Degryse (beiden Play Sports).

“Engels mag in onze tekst geen tweede natuur worden. Nederlands blijft je basis en je Nederlands blijft je eik- en ankerpunt”, zegt eindredacteur Lars Godeau. “Soms krijgen wij ook heel warrige stukken door het Engels. Een bepaald journalist heeft de neiging om veel Engels in zijn stukken te smokkelen, wat eigenlijk ballast is. Soms is Engels niet nodig.”   

Ook voetbalcommentator Philippe Crols heeft een duidelijke mening over het Engels: “Ik zeg niet dat ik een allergie heb aan Engelse woorden, maar als er een fatsoenlijk Nederlandstalig woord voor is, dan moet je dat ook gebruiken.”

Wanneer hij de grafieken met zijn eigen gebruik van Engels onder ogen krijgt, reageert Crols tevreden. “Dit is wel representatief, denk ik. De cijfers die ik hier nu zie, kan ik mij perfect inbeelden.”

“Het is ook goed om te zien dat ik sommige synoniemen of alternatieven (zoals ‘uitbraak’, ‘omschakeling’ of ‘tegenstoot’ als alternatief voor ‘counter’, nvdr.), waarvan ik denk dat ik ze regelmatig gebruik, toch niet zo vaak gebruik. Dit is zeer leerrijk. Hier worden wij nooit mee geconfronteerd”, besluit een enthousiaste Crols.

“Na ons gesprek heb ik nog ruwweg een wedstrijd van Philippe geanalyseerd, omdat hij zei dat hij meteen met zijn resultaten aan de slag zou gaan. Er was inderdaad al een duidelijke verandering”, aldus Hiel.

“Philippe gebruikte sowieso al weinig Engels, maar nu was het nog minder. Hij gebruikte ook enkele taaleigen varianten waarover we gesproken hadden, zoals ‘videoscheids’ in plaats van ‘videoref’. Achteraf vroeg ik hem of hij opzettelijk andere woorden gebruikte en hij gaf toe dat hij tijdens de wedstrijd aan m’n studie dacht”, zegt Hiel met fonkelende ogen.

Opgeluchte analist

“Eén commentator wou niet meewerken, terwijl ik helemaal geen uitspraken doe over goed of slecht. Ik wil gewoon zien wat er gebeurt en waarom het gebeurt”, stelt Hiel.

Play Sports-analist Marc Degryse reageerde opgelucht toen hij hoorde dat de studie beschrijvend en niet normatief was. Tijdens het interview met Hiel geeft hij eerlijk toe dat hij niet bewust met Engels bezig is. “Het is dat je me er echt op attent maakt. Het zijn gewoontes. Je hebt de vaststellingen gedaan, er zijn woorden die ik altijd in het Nederlands gebruik en andere in het Engels, maar niet met het idee om de analyse nog wat duidelijker of sterker te maken.”

Hiel concludeert dat er geen taalbeleid over het Engels bestaat en dat de media er ook geen nood aan lijken te hebben. Commentatoren en analisten staan wel open voor taalfeedback en meer begeleiding. De Vlaamse voetbalmedia zijn niet bewust met Engels bezig, maar ondervinden wel veranderingen door de globalisering van het voetbal.
