Hoe houd je jezelf in (mentale) beweging?

            “Het Dodentochtgevoel is geen fysiek maar een mentaal gevoel. Het gevoel dat je krijgt nadat je vanuit het diepste dal terug naar de oppervlakte bent gekropen, enkel en alleen op wilskracht. Het is verbazingwekkend wat de menselijke geest kan, zelfs al wil het lichaam niet meer meewerken.” , aldus Jef Cauwenberghs (een jonge ongetrainde reporter die voor de allereerste keer deelnam aan de Dodentocht in 2015) in zijn artikel met de beklijvende titel: Welkom in de hel.

De Dodentocht, een sportieve manifestatie waarover journalist Jef Cauwenberghs schrijft, wint ieder jaar aan belangstelling. Het is een bekend wandelevenement dat jaarlijks georganiseerd wordt in de Vlaamse gemeente Bornem, waarbij de deelnemers binnen de 24 uur 100 kilometer dienen af te leggen. Het toenemende succes blijkt onder andere uit het razendsnelle tempo waarop de 50ste editie van deze honderdkilometertocht in 2019 was uitverkocht. Binnen de twee uur waren alle 13 000 beschikbare tickets de deur uit (Delforge, 2019). Het is duidelijk dat steeds meer mensen ‘het Dodentochtgevoel’ willen ervaren. Merkwaardig is de impliciete contradictie van deze vaststelling. Waarom is een evenement dermate populair terwijl vele deelnemers verwijzen naar ‘het diepste dal’ waaruit ze kropen? Hoe houden ze zichzelf 100 kilometer lang in (mentale) beweging? Is dit unieke massa-evenement een heldentocht of toch eerder een lijdensweg? Om op deze vragen een antwoord te bieden werd door de Universiteit Gent in samenwerking met vzw 100 km Dodentocht Kadee een kwantitatieve studie opgezet naar de effectiviteit van zelfmotivatie op de beleving van de deelnemers aan de Dodentocht.        

Goesting vs. druk

Vertrekkend vanuit de Zelf-Determinatie Theorie (ZDT) een breed toepasbare, wetenschappelijk ondersteunde motivatietheorie over het menselijk functioneren, bestudeert de huidige studie de motivatie, beleving en zelfmotiverende strategieën van meer dan duizend wandelaars. In totaal namen er 1383 wandelaars met een gemiddelde leeftijd van 43.39 jaar waarvan 60.2% van het vrouwelijke geslacht deel aan deze studie. De ZDT vormt een empirisch kader voor vele studies naar motivatie in sport, waarbij niet alleen de hoeveelheid motivatie van belang is maar absoluut ook het type motivatie. Het type motivatie kan op twee manieren beïnvloed worden. Enerzijds kan motivatie het gedrag in een bepaalde richting duwen als gevolg van interne doelen zoals het deelnemen aan de Dodentocht puur uit plezier. Anderzijds kan motivatie gedrag in een bepaalde richting trekken door eerder externe doelen zoals het deelnemen aan de Dodentocht om niet te moeten onderdoen voor een vriend. Wanneer gedrag wordt bepaald door interne doelen, dan spreken we over autonome motivatie of goesting, in tegenstelling tot wanneer er externe doelen worden gesteld door de deelnemers dan spreekt men van gecontroleerde motivatie of druk.

 Zelfmotivatie als mentale brandstof

De Dodentocht creëert een unieke situatie waarin de deelnemers gedurende een tijdspanne van 24 uur met slechts één taak bezig zijn namelijk wandelen. Met het oog op een longitudinale studie, een onderzoek over tijd, werd niet alleen naar de beleving en motivatie voor en na afloop van de Dodentocht gepeild, maar ook zelfmotivatie tijdens de tocht werd bevraagd. Zelfmotivatie kan gezien worden als een meer dynamisch aspect van motivatie waarbij actieve inspanningen geleverd worden om de eigen motivatie aan te passen, met andere woorden op welke manier de deelnemers zichzelf tijdens de tocht motiveren om zo zichzelf letterlijk in beweging te houden.

Op vier verschillende momenten gedurende de Dodentocht werd zowel de hoeveelheid als het type zelfmotivatie bevraagd om de fluctuaties in kaart te kunnen brengen, meer specifiek op 27.3 kilometer in Ruisbroek, op 53.7 kilometer in Merchtem, op 72 kilometer in Lippelo en op 89.8 kilometer in Sint-Amands. De resultaten toonden aan dat de deelnemers zichzelf doorheen de tocht steeds meer probeerden te motiveren. Vooral het type gecontroleerde zelfmotivatie nam het sterkste toe. Verder wezen analyses uit dat het type motivatie voor de start van de Dodentocht het gebruik van het type zelfmotivatie tijdens de tocht voorspelde. Zo was de kans groot dat als je met veel goesting aan de start stond, ook tijdens de Dodentocht meer autonome zelfmotiverende strategieën ging toepassen. Daarnaast bleken zelfmotiverende strategieën unieke moderatoren te zijn voor het verschil in de motivatie en de beleving voor en na de tocht. Zo bleek het gebruik van autonome zelfmotivatie een versterkende rol te spelen op alertheid en een bufferend effect te hebben op gecontroleerde motivatie en de mate van bedruktheid na afloop van de Dodentocht. Daarentegen resulteerde het gebruik van gecontroleerde zelfmotivatie tijdens de tocht achteraf in meer gecontroleerde motivatie en minder alertheid, dit alles bovenop het geslacht en de leeftijd van de wandelaars.

Of de Dodentocht door de deelnemers achteraf als heldentocht of als lijdensweg ervaren wordt, is bijgevolg mede afhankelijk van het type zelfmotivatie dat gebruikt werd tijdens de Dodentocht. Het type motivatie waarmee de deelnemers aan de start van de Dodentocht staan kan hierop een voorspellend effect hebben. Er mag met andere woorden geconcludeerd worden dat zelfmotivatie een fundamentele bron kan zijn om de beleving van een deelname aan de Dodentocht te veranderen of te behouden, wat aansluit bij de definitie van het jonge concept ‘zelfmotivatie’. Verder is het een manier om jezelf in (mentale) beweging te houden. Als een mentale brandstof, zal het type zelfmotivatie significant bepalend zijn voor de kwaliteit van die brandstof. Goesting of autonome zelfmotivatie zal met andere woorden effectiever zijn om jezelf in mentale beweging te houden dan druk of gecontroleerde zelfmotivatie. Aangezien de beperkte kennis over zelfmotivatie, is verder onderzoek gebaseerd op de huidige studie naar de effectiviteit van zelfmotivatie dan ook onontbeerlijk gezien het belang ervan voor de toekomst in diverse contexten.
