Living with Intelligence: Een verkenning van toekomstige interacties met intelligente systemen

Help! Mijn stofzuiger begint te praten!

Je wekker gaat vijf minuten eerder af dan anders want er is veel verkeer onderweg. Met je ogen half open wandel je naar de keuken waar de lichten automatisch aangaan. Er wacht een warme kop koffie voor je in het koffiezetapparaat, iets straffer dan normaal want je bent gisteren wat later gaan slapen.

Dit bescheiden toekomstscenario is misschien vandaag al mogelijk. Hoe langer hoe meer krijgen toestellen in onze omgeving computers ingebouwd. Ze werken efficiënter, geautomatiseerd en zijn verbonden met het internet. Kortom, ze zijn slim. Met komst van artificiële intelligentie gaat technologie nu ook zelf beslissingen maken, leren en evolueren. Welke nieuwe ervaringen gaan hieruit vloeien? En hoe gaan we als gebruikers hier mee omgaan?

Tijdens deze masterthesis onderzocht ik de verschillende functies, interacties en effecten van intelligente toestellen. Met het doel om mensen te engageren om zelf na te denken over hoe slimme toestellen hun leefwereld kunnen veranderen.

Artificiële intelligentie voor de deur

AI. Smart Objects. Machine learning. Het zijn begrippen die je tegenwoordig wel vaker tegenkomt bij nieuws over een innovatieve technologie. De laatste jaren is het veld van artificiële intelligentie erg populair geworden. Krachtigere computers en de hoeveelheid beschikbare data door ons gezamenlijk internetgebruik leidt tot een explosie van onderzoek en nieuwe toepassingen. Meer en meer zien we machines complexe taken uitvoeren. Taken waarvan we tot voor kort dachten dat ze menselijke intelligentie nodig hadden. Zintuiglijke waarneming, patroonherkenning, het besturen van complexe systemen, het produceren en verwerken van taal. The sky is the limit voor deze technologie.

Artificiële intelligentie maakt nu de beweging van gespecialiseerde velden zoals gezondheidszorg en geautomatiseerde industrie naar een meer huiselijke omgeving. Hier smelt het samen met dagdagelijkse producten. Deze slimme toestellen beschikken over sensoren, wat rekencapaciteit, een internetverbinding en toegang tot data.  Vaak kunnen ze ook luisteren, zien, ervaren, geautomatiseerd beslissingen maken en nu ook leren en evolueren. We zien toestellen waartegen we kunnen praten, thermostaten die automatisch je huistemperatuur regelen en kleine robotstofzuigers die behendig je meubels vermijden.

Zijn er nog twijfels?

Naast optimisme over de mogelijkheden van artificiële intelligentie zijn er ook bezorgdheden. Zo werken deze slimme systemen vaak als zwarte doos of ‘blackbox’. Hierbij krijgen gebruikers geen inzicht in de werking van een toestel. Zo gaf onderzoek aan dat de gebruikers van Nest thermostaten niet begrepen waarmee het toestel bezig was. Ze gaven aan dat hun slimme thermostaat zijn eigen ding doet. Een gevoel van controle hebben over de toestellen die je gebruikt is doorgaans een belangrijk principe. Hoe kan je immers werken met iets dat onvoorspelbaar en ondoorgrondelijk is? Als we deze toestellen willen blijven gebruiken, gaan we uiteindelijk de controle moeten overlaten aan deze automatische systemen?

Een oplossing hiervoor kan zijn om technologie op een meer menselijke manier te doen communiceren. We zagen het al eerder bij sciencefiction films waarbij computerprogramma’s een gesprek kunnen voeren en robots niet meer te onderscheiden zijn van mensen. Hoe langer hoe meer gedragen computers zich als mensen; ze rijden rond, praten tegen ons, doen salto’s en openen deuren. Dit soort menselijke machines zien we reeds ingezet worden in de zorgsector tegen eenzaamheid. We leren echter hoe we moeten communiceren met mensen. Wat als technologie dit ook op dezelfde manier doet?

Hoe dan ook, als machines kunnen leren en voor zichzelf nadenken evolueren ze van passieve gebruiksvoorwerpen naar actieve toestellen. Gaan we door deze evolutie uiteindelijk op een meer betekenisvolle manier moeten samenwerken? We zien reeds voorbeelden van nieuwe relaties en samenwerkingen die gesmeed worden tussen mensen en machines. Zo worden lager opgeleide arbeiders omgeschoold tot robot arm operator. Op een intuïtieve manier tonen ze de hightech robotarmen welke taken ze moeten uitvoeren door ze naar de juiste locaties te begeleiden. De machine neemt zo de routinematige taken over terwijl wij instaan voor de meer creatieve invulling van het definiëren van de doelen en de taken.

Een oude technologie in een nieuw licht

Deze thema’s van controle, imitatie en samenwerking stonden centraal in de uitwerking van een drieledige interactieve installatie. Mensen laten nadenken over een moeilijk en niche thema zoals artificiële intelligentie is geen sinecure. Ik koos ervoor om de thema’s te gronden in een vertrouwd object. Het zijn dan ook dagdagelijkse lampen die ik gebruik als medium om te reflecteren over de invloed dat intelligente technologie kan hebben op ons dagelijkse leven.

De drie lampen genaamd LOK, Lumo en Lium belichten elk andere thema’s. LOK is een lamp waarop geen controle uit te oefenen is. Ze heeft geen schakelaar voor de lamp aan of uit te zetten. Echter voorspelt de lamp aan de hand van data wanneer je het licht nodig hebt. Ook over zijn hardware heb je geen controle. De lamp vervangt automatisch zijn eigen componenten als deze verouderd worden. Lumo daarentegen werkt volgens menselijke emotionele intelligentie. De lamp werkt enkel wanneer het goedgezind is. Zo kan het eenzaam, bang en kwaad worden wanneer het niet correct behandeld wordt. Bij de derde lamp, Lium staat samenwerking centraal. De controle over het licht wordt dynamisch overgedragen tussen mens en toestel door middel van een gemotoriseerde dimmer. Het laat wederzijdse beïnvloeding toe en stimuleert tot onderhandelen en compromissen zoeken.

De drie lampen - Lok, Lium en Lumo

De drie lampen werden opgesteld bijgestaan door een ondersteunende video die de functies van elke lamp in detail toont. Toeschouwers reflecteerden nu zelf over intelligente technologieën en vertelden over hun persoonlijke ervaringen met slimme toestellen. Er zijn heel wat kansen bij een toekomst waarbij mensen ook kunnen nadenken over de technologie die uiteindelijk in hun huis gebruikt zal worden. Dus kijk in het rond, observeer de toestellen in je omgeving en haal de ontwerper in jezelf naar boven. Hoe kan dit slimmer werken?
