Maak kennis met Ivonne: één van de elf zestigplussers die bovenstaande vragen beantwoordde voor deze masterproef. De cirkels tonen alle personen waar Ivonne tijdens de kindertijd en middelbare leeftijd contact mee had. Personen waarmee ze veel contact had, staan binnenin. Personen waarmee ze minder contact had, staan eerder in de buitenste cirkel. Is haar antwoord vergelijkbaar met wat je zelf hebt geantwoord op bovenstaande vragen? En wat met Ivonnes kinderen? Die heeft ze niet.
Deze masterproef gaat dan ook over zestigplussers zonder kinderen. Ivonne vertelde net zoals tien andere kinderloze zestigplussers over haar leven in een interview. Deze groep wordt immers niet vaak aan het woord gelaten. Men vergeet dat sommige ouderen geen kinderen hebben of scheert iedereen zonder kinderen over dezelfde kam.
De sociale netwerken en levenslopen zijn echter bij iedere kinderloze zestigplusser anders en zijn zelf dynamisch doorheen de levensloop. Met pensioen gaan zorgde er bij Gerard bijvoorbeeld voor dat vele contacten verwaterden:
Goh… ja het een dooft stillekes aan. En dat van uw werk, dat gaat redelijk snel dat dat afbouwt allez, dat ge daar nog weinig contact mee hebt. (Gerard, 69 jaar)
Wat vertellen de deelnemers over het feit dat ze geen kinderen hebben? Hier zijn ze het niet eens met elkaar. Sommigen benadrukken vooral de verschillen: ze denken dat het hebben van geen kinderen een nadeel is omdat ze denken minder steun te ontvangen dan ouders bijvoorbeeld. Anderen zien het hebben van geen kinderen als een voordeel omdat ze zich nu bijvoorbeeld volledig kunnen concentreren op hun werk en carrière maken. In sommige gesprekken ging het vooral over de gelijkenissen met ouders: ze meenden evenveel steun te kunnen ontvangen als mensen met kinderen.
Ik heb dus wel een tijd de kinderen van mijn broer in huis gehad en eigenlijk heeft dat weinig veranderd aan mijn manier van zijn. (Sara, 66 jaar)
De verschillende verhalen zijn uiteindelijk in de masterproef gebundeld in vier profielen die elk een verschillend sociaal netwerk beschrijven. Het sociale netwerk kan een sociaal dorpsnetwerk, slinkend netwerk, familiaal verenigingsnetwerk of een vriendschappelijk vrijgevochten netwerk zijn. Ook een mengeling van verschillende profielen is mogelijk. Familie, geliefden, vrienden, kennissen en huisdieren spelen een verschillende rol in de verschillende profielen. Ze geven of krijgen onder andere verschillende vormen van steun (ze helpen met strijken, laten de hond uit van de buurvrouw, doen boodschappen…). Als kind krijgen de meesten vooral steun van hun (groot)ouders. Nadien krijgen velen steun van hun partner. Wanneer het gesprek gaat over de hoogte- en dieptepunten in het leven, is liefde vaak een belangrijke factor in dit deel van het verhaal.
Ja, dat is dat is mijn tweede man, dat is een gans leven he kind, dat is een gans leven. (Fiona, 81 jaar)
In de verhalen van de deelnemers komen ook vrienden en kennissen naar voren. De rol van deze groep verandert regelmatig doorheen het leven en is moeilijk te voorspellen. Wat betreft collega’s, zijn deze voor sommigen boezemvrienden, anderen hebben er bijna geen contact mee. Ook qua contact met de buren is er veel variatie: Stan ziet zijn buurvrouw elke dag, Rosa ziet haar buurvrouw zelden. Uit de verhalen blijkt dat velen hun sociale netwerk in de toekomst graag willen behouden. Ze hopen op een goede gezondheid omdat dit een grote invloed heeft op hun huidige sociale netwerk.
Eén ding is wel duidelijk geworden: kinderloze zestigplussers bestaan. Het is een erg diverse groep die we niet over dezelfde kam kunnen scheren of vergeten. Verder onderzoek is nodig om de rol van kinderloosheid helemaal te doorgronden. Het zou waardevol zijn ook zieke personen, veertigplussers… hierover te bevragen om een beeld te krijgen van de verhalen van alle mensen zonder kinderen. De elf verhalen in deze masterproef lichten wel al een tipje van de sluier op.
