Tiërra is het afstudeerproject van Ornella Torres Melkebeek gerealiseerd onder begeleiding van Frank Goethijn (Productontwikkeling UAntwerpen) in het academiejaar 2019-2020. 

Het resultaat is een product-set voor tuin en moestuin eigenaars waarmee zij zelf, microbieel bodemverbeteringsmiddel kunnen aanmaken. Dit middel toepassen verhoogt de hoeveelheid micro-organismen in de bodem en aldus ook de bodemgezondheid.

Beschrijving

De set bestaat uit 3 producten: een collectie tool waar de lokaas inzit om de micro-organismen te "vangen", een reactor gedeelte waarin de gecollecteerde micro-organismen vermenigvuldigd worden tot bodemverbeteraar en een app, om de gebruikservaring te optimaliseren en om preciezere resultaten te bekomen.

Oorsprong

De  werking van Tiërra is gebaseerd op een traditionele, agrarische methode om de bodem te verbeteren. Het hoofdingrediënt van de formule zijn de zogenaamde Indigenous Microorganisms, die via een lokaas uit de bodem worden gehaald. De lokaas (rijst) wordt in een container gestopt en voor 7 à 14 dagen in de bodem begraven. Het resultaat is een klomp inheemse bodem micro-organismen die verder worden verwerkt tot bodemverbeteringsmiddel.

Werking

Om 10 L bodemverbeteraar aan te maken met Tiërra, zal de  klomp micro-organismen die men met de collector tool verkrijgt, aangelegd worden met water en 250ml melasse. De melasse dient om de micro-organismen te voorzien van nutriënten tijdens het fermentatieproces. Een luchtpomp aëreert dit proces voor 48h lang in het reactorgedeelte. Eenmaal klaar, wordt het verkregen middel tot 1:20 verdund en aangebracht op de bodem.

Micro-organismen worden gecollecteerd, vermenigvuldigd en terug aangebracht op de bodem.

Voordelen

Het resultaat is een versgemaakt, biologisch middel. De biomassa in de bodem verhogen zal onder andere efficiënter de verontreinigingen in de bodem verteren, planten een boost geven en zelfs de bodemstructuur verbeteren. Het is een ideale oplossing voor al wie met een moestuin wil starten in meer vervuilde omgevingen zoals na verbouwingen of in de stad. Ook is het bestemd voor al wie stopt met het gebruik van pesticiden en die schadelijke restanten op een efficiënte en ecologische manier uit zijn bodem wil halen.

Micro-organismen in dit middel zijn voltalliger aanwezig en bezitten een veel grotere overlevingskans nadat ze op de bodem worden aangebracht dan bij de kant-en-klare versies ervan. Daarbij, zijn kant-en-klare microbiële bodemverbeteraars vaak duur, dus kan de gebruiker van Tiërra er op de lange termijn ook geld mee besparen.

Tiërra is ontworpen zodat de gebruiker geen voorafgaande kennis hoeft te hebben over het zelf maken van zijn of haar eigen microbiële bodemverbeteraar en direct aan de slag kan!

Het middel kan o.a. gebruikt worden om resten van pesticiden uit de bodem te helpen

Slot

Met het ontwerp wil ik het belang van bodemleven en bodemgezondheid in kaart brengen. Daarbij, wil ik ook aantonen dat innovatie niet altijd hoeft te ontstaan uit de nieuwste ontwikkelingen. We kunnen best nog wat leren door terug te kijken hoe men vroeger de problemen oploste die ook nog de dag van vandaag aanwezig zijn.
