Attitudes tegenover seksuele delinquenten: een kwantitatief onderzoek binnen de opleiding Criminologische Wetenschappen naar de invloed van de Big Five persoonlijkheidskenmerken
Attitudes tegenover zedendelinquenten: speelt persoonlijkheid een rol?
Speelt persoonlijkheid een rol bij de vorming van attitudes tegenover zedendelinquenten bij studenten criminologische wetenschappen? Deze masterproef aan de UGent tracht daar een antwoord op te bieden met als doel om inzicht te krijgen in bestaande attitudes en hun voorspellers. Neuroticisme blijkt een voorspeller van bepaalde attitudes te zijn, net zoals leeftijd. Ook is er een verschil zichtbaar tussen attitudes in verschillende studiejaren. Verder onderzoek is aangewezen.
Studenten criminologische wetenschappen bevraagd naar hun persoonlijkheidsprofiel en de invloed hiervan op attitudes tegenover zedendelinquenten.
Studenten criminologische wetenschappen
In het academiejaar 2021-2022 werd een onderzoek gevoerd in het kader van de masterproef criminologische wetenschappen. Het onderzoek vond plaats aan de Universiteit Gent, meer bepaald bij de studenten criminologische wetenschappen. Door diverse vragen werd gepeild naar hun persoonlijkheidskenmerken en naar hun attitudes tegenover zedendelinquenten om na te gaan of er mogelijks een verband bestaat tussen beide.
Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd om predictoren in kaart te brengen die mee attitudes vorm geven. Eens er meer inzicht is in attitudes en welke factoren deze beïnvloeden, kan gericht getracht worden om onjuiste attitudes te veranderen. We weten al dat attitudes beïnvloedt kunnen worden door sociale en andere media, door significante anderen en dergelijke meer. Maar het gaat verder dan dat. Welke factoren liggen er nog mee aan de oorsprong van bepaalde attitudes?
Persoonlijkheidsprofiel
De deelnemende respondenten vertoonden geen opmerkelijk persoonlijkheidprofiel. Ze scoorden hoog op de waarden voor extraversie en altruïsme en gemiddeld op de waarden voor consciëntieusheid en verbeelding en intellect. Op de waarden voor neuroticisme scoorden ze gemiddeld laag. Ook werd er een verschil geobserveerd tussen studenten in de eerste, tweede en derde bachelor voor het kenmerk consciëntieusheid, waarbij de eerste lager scoorden dan de laatste, en tussen studenten in de tweede bachelor en master voor het kenmerk neuroticisme, waarbij eveneens de eerste lager scoorden dan de laatste.
Invloed op attitudes
De attitudes in de criminologie opleiding waren gemiddeld tot laag. Op een schaal van 84 scoorden zij 43, wat wijst op een lage attitude. Er werd statistisch nagegaan of er een verband bestond tussen persoonlijkheidskenmerken en attitudes, ook rekeninghoudend met controlevariabelen. Daaruit bleek dat er een verband merkbaar was bij het kenmerk neuroticisme, namelijk een negatief verband. Dit kenmerk omschrijft de emotionele (in)stabiliteit van personen. Hoe lager de score voor neuroticisme, hoe lager de attitude tegenover seksuele delinquenten. Verder werden er m.b.t. andere kenmerken geen opvallende vaststellingen gedaan. Wat wel opmerklijk was, is de stijgende lijn in positieve attitudes naar studiejaar. Zo vertoonden studenten uit de eerste bachelor beduidend negatievere attitudes dan studenten uit het masterjaar. Dit kan er op wijzen dat studenten een hogere kennis over menselijk en delinquent gedrag hebben opgedaan gedurende hun opleiding en dat dit zorgt voor positievere attitudes. Er moet wel waarkzaam met deze resultaten omgesprongen worden aangezien er een verdoken invloed kan zijn van leeftijd.
Dit onderzoek leert ons dat er bepaalde persoonlijkheidskenmerken mee vorm geven aan attitudes tegenover seksuele delinquenten, namelijk neuroticisme. Mogelijks bestaat er een nog grotere invloed van persoonlijkheidskenmerken op attitudes en bestaat er mogelijk eveneens een grotere invloed van achtergrondkenmerken. Verder onderzoek zal dit moeten verduidelijken door met name rekening te houden met meer achtergrondinformatie, door een grotere groep mensen te bevragen uit tal van disciplines en door algemeen diepgaander onderzoek te voeren. Op die manier kunnen de resultaten doorgetrokken worden naar een grotere groep mensen.
