Het Chinese adoptielandschap onder de loop in België - Een artikel voor en door geadopteerden
De laatste jaren is het adoptielandschap luidkeels besproken, bekritiseerd en geanalyseerd. Hierbij kwamen zeer veel negatieve ervaringen aan bod. Maar kunnen we zomaar een zwart-wit ervaring plakken op adoptie? Het doel van dit artikel is om meer inzicht te verwerven in de adoptie-ervaringen van Chinees geadopteerden in België.
Waarom?
Adoptie is een procedure met vele facetten die alles omvatten van identiteitsvorming tot 'raciale' hiërarchieën en representatie. De praktijk van adoptie wordt vaak verschillend geïnterpreteerd door de complexiteit en de persoonlijke ervaringen van geadopteerden.
Kritische adoptiestudies
Tot nu toe hebben studies over transnationale adoptie de neiging voorrang te geven aan de standpunten van adoptieouders of aan een theoretische benadering, waardoor de perspectieven van geadopteerden ontbraken.
Met de opkomst van de kritische adoptiestudies is er de laatste jaren meer en meer onderzoek vanuit het perspectief van geadopteerden toegankelijk geworden. Toch is het zeer beperkt en té breed. Dit onderzoek tracht deze leegte op te vullen door de stemmen en ervaringen van Chinese geadopteerde vrouwen in België evenveel gewicht te geven.
Nood aan nazorg
Hoewel de ervaringen over het algemeen positief werden bevonden dankzij externe factoren zoals vrienden en familie, onderstrepen hun ervaringen ook het gebrek aan langdurige nazorginitiatieven voor geadopteerden in België als gevolg van de schaarse initiatieven die bovendien vaak op lokaal niveau plaatsvinden.
De rol van nazorg vind ik eigenlijk echt heel belangrijk. Dat zou even belangrijk moeten zijn als de strenge selectieprocedure voor adoptieouders.`
Eindstand
De bevindingen geven een algemeen inzicht in de ervaringen van vrouwelijke Chinese geadopteerden in België, en onthullen hoe maatschappelijke en politieke krachten transnationale adoptie in tijd en ruimte hebben vormgegeven. Bovendien wordt een verklaring gegeven voor het feit dat zoveel geadopteerde meisjes uit China zijn, wat het directe gevolg was van het één-kind-beleid en de algemene zoon-preferentie. Wanneer de gegevens door de lens van identiteit worden geanalyseerd, blijkt dat Chinees geadopteerden vergevingsgezinder zijn ten aanzien van identiteitsgerelateerde kwesties aangezien het één-kind-beleid een belangrijke factor is geweest bij het afstaan van kinderen. Bovendien hebben de ondervraagde geadopteerden zich nooit volledig wit gevoeld aangezien zij door anderen niet als wit worden beschouwd. Dit suggereert dat geadopteerden kwetsbaarder zijn voor racisme en discriminatie vanwege de ondervertegenwoordiging van de Aziatische identiteit in de Belgische media.
