Als blikken konden doden … Hoe tonen katten dat ze elkaar (minder) graag hebben?
“Wat vinden mijn katten nu eigenlijk écht van elkaar?” Deze vraag stelt menig katteneigenaar zichzelf wanneer hij zijn huistijgers door de kamer ziet tuimelen of elkaar straal voorbij ziet lopen. Ook wetenschappers stellen zichzelf gelijkaardige vragen. Deze scriptie probeerde via video-observaties een nieuwe blik te werpen op de sociale interacties tussen katten en hiermee zowel eigenaar als dierenarts te ondersteunen in het management van multi-kat huishoudens.
De kat is de dag van vandaag het meest populaire huisdier in België. Veel van deze katten leven samen onder eenzelfde dak in zogenoemde multi-kat huishoudens. Aangezien de kat een niet volledig sociale soort is – ze wordt “flexibel sociaal” genoemd – kunnen multi-kat huishoudens bestaan uit bevriende katten (een sociale groep) of solitaire individuen. Tussen solitaire katten ontstaat weleens conflict. Dit kan een grote bron van stress zijn voor zowel kat als baasje. Enerzijds kunnen katten negatieve gezondheids- en gedragseffecten ondervinden ten gevolge van chronische stress. Anderzijds kan de band tussen huisdier en eigenaar verslechteren waardoor ook baasjes ongelukkig worden. Om deze negatieve effecten te voorkomen, is meer inzicht in de sociale interacties en relaties tussen katten in een multi-kat huishouden nodig.
De scriptie bestudeerde de interacties van huiskatten in multi-kat huishoudens via videomateriaal aangeleverd door katteneigenaren. Het onderzoek had twee doelen: enerzijds systematisch alle gedragingen oplijsten en beschrijven, anderzijds een vergelijking maken tussen sociale groep en geen sociale groep katten.

Het scriptieonderzoek werd uitgevoerd in verschillende stappen. Eerst selecteerde een enquête via sociale media baasjes van twee gezonde katten ouder dan één jaar oud. In dezelfde enquête werd gepeild naar de mate waarin eigenaren vriendelijke gedragingen tussen de katten waarnamen om te bepalen of de dieren een sociale groep vormden of niet. Geschikte eigenaren filmden vervolgens hun katten in enkele opgelegde contexten: tijdens eetmomenten, slaap- of rustperiodes, spel- of vechtinteracties, ontmoetingen en als de katten elkaars vacht verzorgden. Geschikte video’s werden daarna geanalyseerd door de student met het programma The Observer XT, waarbij het gedrag van elke kat in elke situatie systematisch werd bijgehouden. Via statistische testen werden tenslotte sociale groep en geen sociale groep katten met elkaar vergeleken.
Niet alleen bekijken mensen graag funny, cute of non-stof-laughing kattenvideo’s, ook waren katteneigenaars er massaal in geïnteresseerd om hun eigen katten te filmen voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Finaal slaagden 42 eigenaren erin het onderzoek succesvol te voltooien en het gedrag van hun katten in alle opgelegde situaties vast te leggen. De 42 bestudeerde kattenduo’s (84 katten) werden verdeeld in twee groepen: 31 paren (62 katten) vormden een sociale groep of waren bevriend en 11 duo’s (22 katten) vormden geen sociale groep of waren solitaire individuen.
Laten we een kat een kat noemen
De eerste doelstelling van dit onderzoek – het oplijsten en beschrijven van gedragingen van katten tijdens interacties – werd bereikt. Hiervoor werd gebaseerd op de huidige literatuur en de bestudeerde video’s een zogenaamd “ethogram” opgesteld. Een ethogram is een lijst van gedragingen met bijbehorende beschrijving specifiek voor een bepaalde diersoort. Zulke lijsten zijn nodig om eenduidige communicatie tussen wetenschappers mogelijk te maken en verschillende onderzoeken met elkaar te vergelijken. Er wordt in een ethogram afgesproken om een bepaalde gedraging eenduidig te benoemen – ter vergelijking noemen we een appel appel en geen peer – en beschrijven zodat het voor iedereen herkenbaar is – een appel is een “ronde, harde,, zoetzure vrucht met een klokhuis waarin donkere pitjes zitten”(bron: woorden.org). In deze scriptie werden gelijkaardige definiëringen voorgesteld voor de gedragingen van huiskatten. Een voorbeeld is wurggreep (Engels: stranglehold) waarbij de beschrijving luidt “een kat bijt langdurig in de nek van een andere kat, waarbij ze deze kat doorgaans op haar plek houdt door de voorpoten rond de nek te houden”. Via het opgestelde ethogram kunnen we de vraag “wat doen katten?” beantwoorden, zodat ook verder onderzoek mogelijk is naar het “waarom’, “wanneer” of andere vragen.
Hou vrienden dichtbij, maar vijanden … toch beter op afstand
In de volgende twee paragrafen volgt hetgeen waar u als lezer op zat te wachten: “Hoe kan ik herkennen dat mijn katten elkaar (minder) graag hebben?’. Wanneer sociale groep katten vergeleken werden met geen sociale groep katten, konden enkele opmerkelijke gedragsverschillen aangetoond worden. Sociale groep katten zullen betrekkelijk meer worstelen en spelrol vertonen. Beide gedragingen zijn onderdeel van sociaal spel tussen katten. Bij worstelen tuimelen de katten samen over de grond, waarbij ze elkaar ingehouden kunnen bijten, vastgrijpen met de voorpoten of trappelen met de achterpoten. Bij spelrol rolt een kat op de rug met de buik bloot en de poten gebogen. Katten die elkaar graag hebben, tonen dit dus door fysiek contact op te zoeken en samen te rollebollen.
Geen sociale groep katten daarentegen bewaren liever de afstand door sociaal te staren, volgens deze scriptie vooral tijdens eetmomenten. Sociaal starende katten maken onderling intens oogcontact. Hiermee proberen katten elkaar te overbluffen en weg te jagen: wie wegkijkt, verliest. In deze scriptie zagen we deze verscholen vorm van agressie vooral in eetsituaties, wat een uitdrukking kan zijn van competitie tussen de katten voor het voer.
Besluit
Deze scriptie brengt baasjes weer een stap dichter bij het begrijpen van hun huiskatten. De sociale interacties tussen huiskatten zijn complex, maar dit onderzoek bracht extra inzichten: bevriende katten zullen samen spelen, terwijl solitaire individuen elkaar aanstaren. Indien katten in eenzelfde huishouden niet overeen komen, kunnen managementmaatregelen de spanning verlichten. Het voorzien van voldoende schuilplaatsen en bronnen (eten, water, slaapplaatsen etc.) is hierbij cruciaal. Op die manier kunnen we onze favoriete viervoeters en zo ook de baasjes gelukkig houden!
