Lenzen en snippers bij een tocht - een fotografisch-literair onderzoek naar het oeuvre van Sigurd Lewerentz.
“Het was alsof hij onder een bijzondere hoek naar de wereld keek...” (Wilson, 1997).
Mijn werk, dat opgevat is als diptiek of tweeluik, vormt in eerste instantie een gefragmenteerd tekstueel-beeldend onderzoek naar een methodiek om architectuur te analyseren.
Het beeldend luik handelt telkens over de fenomenologie, terwijl het tekstuele luik de architectuur benadert vanuit een literaire invalshoek. In mijn werk pas ik die persoonlijke methodiek vervolgens toe op het oeuvre van Sigurd Lewerentz, maar die zou ook voor werk van andere architecten kunnen gelden. De reden waarom ik voor hem koos, is door mijn fascinatie voor zijn immer kritische houding ten opzichte van tijdsafhankelijke tendensen in de architectuur, maar ook ten opzichte van zichzelf. Zijn werk is een direct resultaat hiervan.
Sigurd Lewerentz (1885–1975), een van de meest vereerde
en gemythologiseerde architecten uit de (Zweedse) architectuurgeschiedenis, was een man van weinig woorden. Hij kon wel uren naar een spijker of steen staren, zich afvragend hoe dit element dan wel niet geproduceerd was.
De zwijgzaamheid die hem zo typeerde, alsook zijn overtuiging dat zijn architectuur voor hem moest spreken, eerder dan hij zelf, zijn allicht de redenen voor zijn relatieve onbekendheid (Wilson, 1997) (Archipel vzw, z.d.).
Analoog aan zijn eigen ontwerpmethodiek en iconografische denk- en werkwijze, kijk ik op basis van vier lenzen naar
zijn gebouwde werk vanuit een register dat bestaat uit een welbepaalde combinatie tussen tekening, tekst en beeld, net zoals hij me dat ook voordeed. Deze elementen komen in dit werk samen, en daardoor wordt de continuïteit in het werk van Lewerentz duidelijk.
