Toen was het stil
Stilte en geluid, geluid en stilte. Twee woorden die tezamen paradoxaal lijken. Toch zijn er enkele enkele geluidskunstwerken – een moderne kunstvorm die draait rond geluid – waarbij ook een bedoelde stilte aanwezig lijkt te zijn. Is dit wel mogelijk?
Een betekenis van stilte
Ben je ooit al eens op een plek geweest waar er complete stilte heerst? Of viel het je op dat er toch nog geluid was? Hoorde je je eigen lichaam? Amerikaans componist John Cage bekende in de jaren 1950 dat er niet zoiets als absolute stilte bestaat. Waar je ook komt, je zult steeds omgeven worden door geluid. Stilte heeft bijgevolg diverse betekenissen gekregen zoals geluiden die niet intentioneel zijn, die onze aandacht of rust niet verstoren, enz. Stilte is geen vorm van geluid, maar ze is ook niet zijn tegenovergestelde.
Meer dan stilte
De relatie van stilte met kunst en de mens is zeer boeiend. Ze is een manier om tot rust te komen en even te ontsnappen aan de dagelijkse, drukke maatschappij. Ze maakt deel uit van non-verbale communicatie en is een uitlaatklep voor moeilijkere thema’s en gevoelens. Ook is ze van groot belang in religieuze praktijken als een weg naar je innerlijke zelf of God.
Stille noten
Geluidskunst is een kunstvorm waarbij geluid of muziek en beeldende kunst samenkomen. Laten we hierom even uitweiden naar de rol van stilte in muziek en in beeldende kunsten.
Voor 1900, toen in de westerse klassieke muziek nog strakke regels en normen golden, kwam stilte voornamelijk voor in de vorm van een rust of om een dramatisch gevoel bij de luisteraar te veroorzaken. Vanaf de eeuwwisseling kwam daar verandering in: met de opkomst van de industrie, technologie en de Wereldoorlogen sijpelden nieuwe geluiden de Westerse muziek binnen. Hierdoor zochten componisten van toen ook naar nieuwe manieren van muziek maken want de oude deden er voor vele niet meer toe. Hiermee ging ook een nieuw gebruik van stilte gepaard: stilte kreeg een grotere, meer autonome rol in muziekstukken. Al deze zoektochten leidden uiteindelijk tot een van de grootste breekpunten uit de Westerse klassieke muziek-geschiedenis: John Cages 4’33” (1952), een compositie met alleen maar stilte. Dit werk veranderde voorgoed hoe de wereld naar stilte kijkt. (Luistertip: beluister dit werk zeker eens intussen) Dit inspireerde talloze componisten en kunstenaars, en sindsdien heeft de wereld stilte als iets meer dan een afwezigheid van geluid verwelkomd.

Leegte
Ook in beeldende kunstwerken heeft zich eenzelfde tendens voorgedaan: voor 1900 waren kunstenaars vooral bezig met het vullen van hun werken en hadden niet echt aandacht voor stilte, of, hier beter gezegd, leegte. Toch waren al enkele kunstenaars zich bewust van de kracht van leegte op een canvas zoals de Franse kunstenaar Jacques-Louis David die de helft van zijn schilderij Marat (1793) voorzag van een zwarte, donkere leegte. Vanaf de eeuwwisseling verkenden kunstenaars allerlei innovatieve manieren om nieuwe kunst te creëren. Sommigen gingen zelfs zo ver dat het doek gewoon leeg was zoals Kazimir Malevich’ Black Square (1913). Tientallen jaren later deed de Franse kunstenaar Yves Klein dit op veel grotere schaal: een hele tentoonstelling, Le Vide (1958) gewijd aan niets en leegte. Kunstenaars als Malevich, Cage en Klein hebben ongetwijfeld bijgedragen aan de nieuwe erkenning van stilte in de kunsten.
Geluidskunst: een stil kunstje?
Vooraleer we kijken naar hoe stilte en geluidskunst samengaan, leg ik hieronder even uit wat geluidskunst nu eigenlijk betekent. Deze kunstvorm ontstond vorige eeuw samen met de industrialisering en opkomst van de technologie. Geluidskunst heeft in de eerste instantie betrekking op geluid of iets auditiefs. Daarnaast worden alle geluidskunstwerken steeds vergezeld van een visuele ondersteuning: dat kan een fysiek object, projectie of zelfs niets zijn. Geluidskunst is gekend om haar toegankelijkheid net omdat ze zo open van vorm is: kunstenaars hangen niet vast aan strikte regels. Ook gaat het kunstwerk altijd in dialoog met de omgevende ruimte zoals een betekenisvolle relatie met de context. Bezoekers kunnen errond wandelen of met een bepaalde handeling het werk activeren. Dit is meteen het laatste belangrijke kenmerk van geluidskunst: de rol van de bezoeker of toeschouwer.

Hoe paradoxaal het ook klinkt, er bestaan enkele geluidskunstwerken die draaien rond bedoelde stilte – een stilte die de kunstenaar intentioneel verwerkte. Zo kan stilte bijvoorbeeld het onderwerp van het werk, een manier om de toeschouwer tot rust te brengen of een bepaalde boodschap te communiceren, een doel wanneer de grenzen van geluid overschreden worden of stilte in de vorm van leegte in de visuele ondersteuning zijn.
Geluidsinstallatie Tacet van Paul Beuk en Hekkenbergarchitects
Tacet (2008) is een geluidskunstwerk van Paul Beuk en het Nederlandse bedrijf Hekkenbergarchitects dat zich bevindt in het Klankenbos in Neerpelt. De bezoeker komt via een ondergrondse ingang terecht in een geluiddichte, glazen box middenin het bos en wordt zich al gauw bewust van een paradoxaal gevoel: een bosrijk uitzicht zonder enig bijpassend geluid – geen tsjilpende vogeltjes, geen vallende noten, geen ruisende wind door het bladerdek. Met dit kunstwerk hoopten de kunstenaars bij de toeschouwer een unieke ervaring teweeg te brengen en hem/haar bewust te maken van de stilte die hier duidelijk bedoeld is.
Conclusie
Stilte is niet de tegenovergestelde maar ook niet een vorm van geluid. Ze kwam al voor in composities en beeldende kunstwerken als meer dan een loutere afwezigheid van geluid. Dit toont aan dat stilte deel kan uitmaken van een geluidskunstwerk zonder het meest belangrijke kenmerk van geluidskunst – een omgang met iets auditiefs – tegen te spreken. Het is niet alleen mogelijk, maar ook een meerwaarde voor geluidskunstwerken. Stilte is een medium om bepaalde, soms moeilijke boodschappen door te geven en een manier om je innerlijke zelf te vinden of tot rust te komen. Stilte is een kunst op zich.
