De erfenis van oorlog, in goede en kwade dagen
In Zedelgem en Jabbeke, in het verre West-Vlaanderen, in de groene gordel van het Brugse Ommeland ligt het 365 hectare grote natuurgebied Vloethemveld. Omwonenden spenderen er hun zondagse middagwandeling en lokale lopers kennen de bosbaden als hun broekzak. Maar wat slechts recent op de voorgrond is gekomen is het verhaal van het krijgsgevangenkamp dat zich in de kern van het gebied bevond tijdens de nasleep van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Vandaag de dag wordt Vloethemveld uitgebaat door het Agentschap Natuur en Bos (ANB), dat naast zich in te zetten voor de fauna en flora, ook met het nodige respect wil omgaan met de restanten van het kamp. In een tijd van klimaatopwarming, stelselmatig verlies van ecosystemen en vervuiling van onze atmosfeer probeert ANB een prioritaire balans op te maken. Krijgt natuur de voorkeur op cultuur? Of is het net andersom?
‘Er was eens… oorlog’
Voordat er nagedacht kan worden over het belang van natuurlijk erfgoed ten opzichte van cultureel erfgoed is het belangrijk om in kaart te brengen over welk cultureel erfgoed er hier gesproken wordt. Het krijgsgevangenkamp Vloethemveld was operationeel van februari 1945 tot de zomer van 1946 en huisde over die hele periode 150.000 gevangenen, voornamelijk Duitsers maar ook Esten, Litouwers en Letten. De leefomstandigheden in het kamp waren streng en de spanningen liepen frequent op tussen de gevangenen, bewakers en omwonenden. Er was medeleven met de gevangenen, maar ook wrok voor het schrikbewind dat zij vier jaar lang hadden gehandhaafd.
De Tweede Wereldoorlog ligt al bijna een eeuw achter ons, maar de wrijvingen die daar ontstonden zijn tot op de dag van vandaag nog voelbaar. Dagelijks worden er inspanningen geleverd om slachtoffers erkenning te geven, terwijl er tegelijkertijd ook nieuwe groeperingen ontstaan die minder kritisch met de oorlogsmisdaden omgaan. Het is dan ook niet verrassend dat sites als Vloethemveld vastlopen op de vraag hoe ze dit controversiële erfgoed een correcte plaats kunnen geven in de maatschappij.
Voorheen werd omzichtig omgegaan met het kampverhaal door enkel de ellende van de ‘universele gevangenen' te benadrukken. Maar de omwonenden waren misnoegd en overtuigd dat er meer achter dat verhaal zat. ‘Ik vind het belachelijk dat we nooit iets meer hebben gehoord over dat krijgsgevangenkamp’, roept een omwonende vrouw uit, ‘dan moet het zijn dat ze er niet willen over praten’. ANB wil de donkere bladzijde een plaats geven in hun domein, maar heeft schrik dat er daardoor een negatief beeld zal ontstaan.
Geen wij-zij verhaal, maar een ons verhaal
Het is typerend bij controversiële sites dat bepaalde elementen, al dan niet intentioneel, vergeten worden. Daartegenover is het net essentieel alle aspecten van zo’n verleden bloot te leggen en de betrokken erfgoedgemeenschappen actief te laten meebeslissen welke elementen wel of niet gecommuniceerd worden. Bij de omwonenden van Zedelgem en Jabbeke was er veel interesse om meer te weten te komen over de krijgsgevangen en ook kritisch na te denken over hun leven en daden, zeker na het voorval met het Letse Bijenkorf Monument.
Dit monument werd in 2018 opgericht in Zedelgem en eind 2021, ten gevolge van de controverse, weer weggehaald. Het probleem met het monument was dat het geen nuance gaf over de effectieve rol die de Letse krijgsgevangenen hadden gespeeld in de jodenvervolging van de Nazi’s. Veel inwoners begrepen op het moment zelf niet goed waarom er in de eerste plaats een monument werd geplaatst, maar ten tweede ook niet waarom het zo snel weer werd weggehaald. Ondanks deze controverse gaven de omwonenden aan dat ze met de kennis die ze nu hebben toch erkenning willen geven aan de krijgsgevangenen. Sommigen opteerden zelfs om een algemeen herdenkingsmonument op te richten, mits de volledige en correcte contextualisering.
De betrokken erfgoedgemeenschappen maakten duidelijk dat in dit krijgsgevangenschap verhaal er niet gesproken kan worden over de overwinnaar tegen te verliezers. Een vrouw die haar hele leven al in en rond het domein woonde omschreef het als volgt: ‘We zijn allemaal mensen, en je kan niet weten tot welke soort extremen een persoon tot het uiterste kan gedreven worden. Natuurlijk zijn er mensen die slechter zijn dan anderen, daarom dat het belangrijk is dat dit kan verteld worden aan de wereld’.
Kip of het ei?
Vanuit de erfgoedgemeenschap is het bewaren van de culturele kenmerken van de site een must, en dit hoeft niet te contrasteren met het natuurbeleid van ANB. In de westerse wereld wordt al verschillende eeuwen cultuur en natuur als twee verschillende entiteiten gezien, maar die opsplitsing is eigenlijk maar schijn. Natuurlijk erfgoed en cultureel erfgoed hebben net de mogelijkheid elkaar te versterken, en daarbij hoeft de ene voor de ander niet onder te doen. UNESCO introduceerde in 1992 de term ‘cultural landscape’, wat zoveel betekent als een landschap dat zijn vorm heeft gekregen door interactie met de mens en daarvoor van historisch belang is geworden.
De vele restanten in Vloethemveld uit die periode van het krijgsgevangenkamp zijn vandaag de dag gedeeltelijk geïntegreerd in de natuurlijke evolutie van de flora en fauna van het domein. Waar op sommige plaatsen er barakken zijn verdwenen zijn er anderen waar de barakken net in evenwicht zijn met hun omgeving. Deze symbiotische groei hoeft niet negatief te zijn. Natuur en cultuur hoeven geen tegenovergestelde van elkaar te zijn, maar eerder twee kanten van dezelfde medaille.
