Werelden op papier
Difference is a problem only if we believe that sameness is the normal state of things.
Met die woorden duidde de Kameroense historicus Achille Mbembe (°1957) op een eeuwenoude spanning tussen volkeren, culturen en religies, die in het negentiende-eeuwse Europa vorm gaf aan een vergaand koloniaal wereldbeeld. Daarin stelde het verlichte Westen zichzelf voor als de hoogste maatstaf van vooruitgang, terwijl alles wat daarvan afweek gedoemd werd in haar schaduw te verdwijnen. Het is een waardeoordeel dat tot vandaag aan de basis ligt van racistisch gedachtegoed en hardnekkige stereotypen over andere culturen en hun volkeren. Net daarom is het geen onderwerp dat rust in de geschiedenisboeken. Het leeft.
Klein land, grote ambities
In de late negentiende en vroege twintigste eeuw kwam
die denkwijze radicaal tot leven in de zogenaamde Scramble for Africa; de wedloop waarin Europese grootmachten haastig gebieden in Afrika onder elkaar verdeelden. België sprong daarbij in het oog: koning Leopold II (1835-1909) verwierf de Congo Vrijstaat (1885-1908) als persoonlijk bezit en groeide uit tot hét boegbeeld van Belgisch kolonialisme. Toch werd de rol van de alledaagse pers vaak onderschat. Ook populaire geïllustreerde tijdschriften – de ‘boekskes’ van toen – droegen bij aan het verspreiden van koloniale denkbeelden. Deze bladen, die als nieuw massamedium hun weg vonden in duizenden Belgische huiskamers, brachten verre volkeren en culturen dichterbij. Via gravures, foto’s, prentkaarten en reisverslagen kregen lezers zo een verleidelijk venster op een nog grotendeels onbekende wereld.
Ten tijde van kolonialisme droegen zulke beelden bij aan een hoger doel: het kleine België positioneren aan de hoogste toppen van orde en beschaving. Terwijl ons land zich in de late negentiende eeuw aan de buitenwereld dus voorstelde als een vooruitstrevende jonge natiestaat, werden culturele anderen, waaronder Arabieren, Aziaten en Afrikanen, steeds herleid tot het primitieve, het achterlijke en het onvolmaakte – alles dat het Westen meende dat het niet was of wilde zijn.
In mijn masterproef besloot ik precies die ‘werelden op papier’ te verkennen. Ik keek naar hoe drie grote regio’s werden voorgesteld: de Oriënt (het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika), Afrika (Congo, maar ook Oost, West- en Zuid-Afrika) en de Oude Wereld (Oost- en Zuid-Azië), allemaal door een lens van beschavingsdrang en kolonisatie. Doorheen mijn historische reis stootte ik op beelden die bol stonden van negatieve stereotypen en karikaturale voorstellingen. Volkeren werden gegeneraliseerd, culturen gereduceerd tot archetypes en complexe historische en sociale realiteiten werden weggefilterd, waardoor een vertekend en vaak denigrerend beeld werd gecreëerd dat contrasteerde aan dat van de westerling.
De visuele component opende bovendien voor vele lezers deuren die enkel woorden niet geopend kregen. Het zien van de culturele andere betekende dat ze uit de schaduwachtige verbeeltenis konden treden, en lezers direct geconfronteerd werden met realistisch aandoende, haast tastbare voorstellingen van verre, mystieke culturen en hun bevolkingen. Maar wat werd nu precies over die verschillende andere culturen geschreven en getoond?
De Oriënt
Po
pulaire media en politici hanteren vaak culturele representaties van het Oosten die voortbouwen op een tijdloos vijandbeeld. In de hedendaagse maatschappij heeft de “heroïsche” strijd tegen “heidens barbarisme” inmiddels plaatsgemaakt voor een oorlog tegen “islamitisch terrorisme”, maar de essentie blijft dezelfde. Het Oosten dient als ultieme tegenpool van het Westen: mysterieus en verleidelijk, maar tegelijk gevaarlijk en achtergesteld.
Turkse, Marokkaanse en andere Noord-Afrikaanse bevolkingsgroepen werden daarom vaak tweeledig gerepresenteerd: enerzijds als vijandige en strijdlustige tegenstanders, anderzijds als schilderachtige figuren die een zekere exotische, soms erotische, aantrekkingskracht opriepen.
Afrika
Afrika was volgens het Westen geheel onbeschaafd, zelfs wild. Het continent werd neergezet als primitief, kinderlijk en hulpeloos; een continent dat was stilgevallen in de oertijd. Westerse kolonisatoren zagen het als een maagdelijk land, dat nood had aan opvoeding en beschaving van westerse kolonisatoren.
Congo, toen nog het privébezit van koning Leopold II, werd in dat opzicht voorgesteld als een vredelievend project waar Belgische tussenkomst het land naar welvaart en voorspoed moest brengen, als een ouder begaan met de zorgen van een kind.
Die stereotypen zijn taai. Het beeld van Afrika als een arm continent zonder geschiedenis of cultuur blijft voortbestaan. Complexe realiteiten verdwijnen in een verhaal waarin het Westen redding moet brengen.
In de ban van Japan
In Oost-Azië maakte enkel Japan indruk. Omdat het land zich moderniseerde naar westers model, werd het geprezen als een natie die op weg was naar beschaving. China daarentegen was een vernederd land, aangetast door opium, bewoond door een volk dat als karikaturaal en wreed werd gekenmerkt.
Voor Zuid-Azië, waar Groot-Brittannië en Nederland de macht hadden, benadrukte de Belgische pers vooral het economisch gewin en de tropische schoonheid als bewijsstukken van succesvolle kolonisatie. Het werden schoolvoorbeelden van geslaagde kolonies, waaruit België inspiratie kon puren voor haar eigen kolonie.
Ook die oude koloniale vooroordelen hebben diepe sporen nagelaten. Japan wordt in het Westen vaak nog steeds bewonderd als technologisch en economisch modern – een land dat lijkt te passen binnen een westers succesmodel – terwijl China stereotiep wordt gezien als een machtige, maar bedreigende grootmacht. Zuid-Azië, inclusief India en Indonesië, wordt vaak exotisch voorgesteld in toerisme en media: kleurrijk, spiritueel, pittoresk, maar tegelijk een plek waar lokale complexiteit en historische autonomie onderbelicht blijven.
Op die manier blijven de koloniale stereotypen impliciet (en expliciet) doorwerken in de manier waarop niet-westerse landen vandaag worden waargenomen en besproken.
Een spiegel voor onszelf
Wat al deze voorbeelden tonen, is dat koloniale beeldvorming niet zomaar verdwenen is. Ze zit ingebakken in de manier waarop we over culturele anderen én andere culturen denken. Oude gravures hebben inmiddels plaatsgemaakt voor sociale media, maar de mechanismen zijn opvallend gelijk: simplificatie, stereotypering, en de neiging om culturele diversiteit te reduceren tot één herkenbaar beeld ontdaan van nuance.
Door terug te kijken naar hoe de Belgische pers anderhalve eeuw geleden andere culturen afbeeldde, houden we onszelf vandaag een spiegel voor. De beelden tonen hoe sterk een samenleving behoefte kan hebben aan een tegenpool om haar eigen identiteit te bevestigen. Om een wildgroei aan denkpatronen uit te roeien, is het daarom belangrijk bij de wortels te beginnen; het zijn immers geen curiosa uit een ver verleden: ze leven door en verblinden ons voor de echte rijkdom in verschil.
