Nederlands verplicht? Niet in elke klas!

Hoe gaan leerkrachten om met de groeiende taaldiversiteit in hun klassen? Uit deze masterproef blijkt dat leerkrachten dit op verschillende manieren invullen. Sommige leerkrachten gebruiken de thuistalen van leerlingen om hun leerproces te ondersteunen, anderen kiezen om enkel het Nederlands toe te laten in de klas. Deze verschillende werkwijzen tonen het belang van nascholing van leerkrachten om met de meertaligheid in hun klas aan de slag te gaan.

Meertaligheid als troef

“Dat is dan ook zoiets dat vanuit de politiek not done is eigenlijk [...], terwijl dat dat wetenschappelijk totaal anders is.” (Leerkracht uit deelnemende school)

De meertaligheid in scholen neemt de laatste jaren sterk toe. Dit wordt in Vlaanderen vaak tegemoetgekomen door te focussen op het Nederlands. Onderzoek toont echter aan dat wanneer de thuistaal van leerlingen niet welkom is op school, leerlingen minder gemotiveerd zijn. Daartegenover blijkt dat het verwelkomen van thuistalen een groter gevoel van acceptatie bij leerlingen realiseert, wat het leerproces ondersteunt. Daarom is het zinvol om als leerkracht met thuistalen aan de slag te gaan en dit als school te ondersteunen.

De school aan zet

Elke school voert op verschillende domeinen een eigen beleid. Eén van deze domeinen is taal. Het taalbeleid van scholen kan een centrale rol spelen in het ondersteunen van leerkrachten om met de thuistaal van leerlingen aan de slag te gaan. Concreet kunnen scholen dit doen door hun taalbeleid strategisch vorm te geven. Dit betekent dat de school taalonderwijs aanbiedt dat gebaseerd is op wetenschappelijke inzichten, maar ook leerkrachten ondersteunt in het verwerven van kennis en vaardigheden over sterk taalonderwijs.

Taal in elk vak

Taalonderwijs wordt vaak gezien als lessen Nederlands, Frans of Engels. Het kan echter ook verder gaan dan taalvakken. Scholen en leerkrachten kunnen bijvoorbeeld aan de slag gaan met functioneel meertalig onderwijs. Dit is een manier van lesgeven waarbij de thuistalen van leerlingen actief worden gebruikt om lesinhouden aan te leren. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld aan de hand van bronnenmateriaal in de thuistaal van leerlingen in de les geschiedenis of leerlingen met dezelfde thuistaal toe te laten om in hun thuistaal iets aan elkaar te verduidelijken. Deze aanpak kan dus ook buiten taallessen gebruikt worden om het leerproces van alle leerlingen te ondersteunen.

Samen sterker in de klas

Leerkrachten moeten voldoende ondersteund worden om met meertaligheid aan de slag te gaan. Dit kan door hen bij te scholen. Uit deze masterproef blijkt dan ook dat leerkrachten de meerwaarde van nascholing gericht op functioneel meertalig onderwijs erkennen. Dit is volgens leerkrachten vooral succesvol wanneer ze binnen de school samen aan de slag gaan met dit thema. Daarnaast blijkt het ook van cruciaal belang dat initiatieven voor nascholing overeenstemmen met de visie van het taalbeleid van de school. Desondanks bleek ook dat er een duidelijke tekortkoming was in die nascholing. Zo gaven leerkrachten aan dat ze opvolging op lange termijn missen. Scholen kunnen bijvoorbeeld hun leerkrachten eraan herinneren om met functioneel meertalig onderwijs aan de slag te gaan door posters met concrete tips in de leraarskamer op te hangen.

Waar wringt het schoentje?

Het blijkt echter niet evident te zijn voor leerkrachten om met functioneel meertalig onderwijs aan de slag te gaan. Zo blijkt dat leerkrachten verschillende drempels ervaren. Leerkrachten spreken bijvoorbeeld over een groot aantal verschillende talen binnen een klas, de klasgrootte, lesinhouden die zich moeilijk lenen tot het gebruik van thuistalen en een gebrek aan tijd. Daarnaast blijken ook persoonlijke overtuigingen van leerkrachten, een gebrek aan middelen en een inconsistente opvolging vanuit het beleid het gebruik van functioneel meertalig onderwijs te bemoeilijken.

Onderlinge verschillen

Het werd binnen deze masterproef duidelijk dat scholen op verschillende wijze met functioneel meertalig onderwijs aan de slag gaan. Eén school ging hier al actief mee aan de slag en organiseerde nascholingen rond dit thema. In een andere school was dit helemaal niet het geval. Desondanks bleken in deze school ook elementen van functioneel meertalig onderwijs aanwezig te zijn.

Achter de schermen van het onderzoek

Om tot deze bevindingen te komen, namen drie secundaire scholen deel aan dit onderzoek. In deze scholen spreekt meer dan de helft van de leerlingen thuis een andere taal dan het Nederlands, waardoor de werkwijze van deze scholen bijzonder interessant was om te bestuderen. In iedere school werden verschillende beleidsdocumenten geanalyseerd. Deze documenten stonden telkens in verband met het taalbeleid of het nascholingsplan van de school. Daarnaast werden in iedere school interviews afgenomen met leerkrachten om hun persoonlijke ervaring met professionalisering in het kader van functioneel meertalig onderwijs in kaart te brengen. Ten slotte werden de bevindingen uit de analyse van de documenten en de interviews samengebracht om tot bovenstaande conclusies te komen.

Wat kunnen we hiermee?

Om met de groeiende meertaligheid in Vlaamse klassen aan de slag te gaan, is het dus belangrijk dat scholen hun taalbeleid strategisch vormgeven. Door een taalvisie te ontwikkelen die het gebruik van functioneel meertalig onderwijs ondersteunt en nascholing hierop af te stemmen, kunnen scholen leerkrachten versterken in hun kennis en vaardigheden om met meertaligheid aan de slag te gaan. Dit komt uiteindelijk ook ten goede van het leerproces van de leerlingen zelf. Binnen die nascholingen blijkt het cruciaal om leerkrachten samen te laten leren, maar ook opvolging te voorzien zodat de verworven inzichten en vaardigheden op lange termijn blijven ingezet worden.

De overheid zou scholen hiertoe kunnen stimuleren en ondersteuning bieden in het opstellen van een strategisch taalbeleid. Scholen kunnen in hun taalbeleid meer expliciete aandacht besteden aan de meertaligheid van hun leerlingen en nascholing van leerkrachten. Ten slotte kan ook de lerarenopleiding meer aandacht besteden aan het aanleren van concrete werkvormen die het meertalige repertoire van leerlingen omarmen.

Een uitdaging met toekomst

De groeiende taaldiversiteit bij leerlingen in het Vlaamse onderwijs blijft een uitdaging. Het is echter zinvol om kritisch te blijven tegenover de huidige focus op de Nederlandse taal. De thuistaal van leerlingen kan namelijk ook een troef zijn in het leerproces van leerlingen. Alle leerlingen. De voorwaarde is echter dat leerkrachten en scholen hiertoe voldoende ondersteund worden. Dit is een piste die verdere verkenning waard is.
