De nacht die zichzelf choreografeert
A real rave isn’t about watching; it’s about
being essential to the moment. The space

Een rave draait niet om kijken, maar om meedoen. Toch duikt de ravecultuur steeds vaker op in theaters, nachtclubs, muziekfestivals en kunstinstellingen. Wat blijft er over van die collectieve energie wanneer de dansvloer een podium wordt of andersom?
Rave is namelijk niet zomaar een stijl, maar een methode om mensen, lichamen, muziek en ruimte met elkaar te verbinden. En die methode verandert zodra het van omgeving verandert. Op de dansvloer ontstaat een wisselspel tussen kijken, bewegen en reageren. Niemand heeft de choreografie ingestudeerd, maar toch ontstaat er iets dat erop lijkt.
Een ruimte zonder muren
Een rave heeft opvallend weinig nodig. Een soundsystem, licht, mensen en een plek kunnen volstaan. De architectuur hoeft zelfs niet vooraf als clubruimte te bestaan.
De ruimte ontstaat terwijl de nacht bezig is.
De dansvloer is geen neutrale doos waarin een evenement plaatsvindt. De beweging van de crowd maakt voortdurend nieuwe ruimtes: hier ontstaat een plek om te dansen, daar een plek om te kijken, verderop een doorgang of een tijdelijk middelpunt. Zodra de aandacht verschuift, verandert ook de ruimte, oftewel: No walls, only fields.
Die gedachte krijgt een radicale vorm in het werk van Temporary Pleasure. Choreomania werd niet opgevat als een voorstelling die toevallig in een club plaatsvindt. De club zelf wordt het performatieve materiaal. Temporary Pleasure werkt met het idee van een nomadische club: een tijdelijke infrastructuur die telkens opnieuw kan ontstaan, afhankelijk van locatie, publiek en omstandigheden.
De ‘amateur’
Een dansende menigte laat zich moeilijk vastleggen in een vaste reeks bewegingen. Sommige lichamen springen, schokken, trillen of herhalen eindeloos dezelfde beweging. Anderen verliezen zich in de massa. Soms lijkt de groep één organisme te worden. Een nieuwe raver krijgt geen choreografie uitgelegd. Die kijkt, voelt en doet mee. Bewegingen verspreiden zich door de menigte en veranderen onderweg. De training, met andere woorden, ís de performance.
Historica en choreografe Kélina Gotman gebruikt hiervoor het begrip fitful bodies: lichamen die beven, dansen, schokken, trillen of zich collectief synchroniseren. Zij leest deze lichamelijke ontregeling als alternatief voor het efficiënte en gecontroleerde lichaam dat de moderne samenleving doorgaans verlangt.
De dansvloer is niet alleen een plaats om aan de dagelijkse werkelijkheid te ontsnappen, maar mede een politieke omgeving waarin lichamen tijdelijk anders mogen functioneren: minder efficiënt, minder voorspelbaar en minder individueel.
Wat niet in het archief past
Hier wordt het begrip critical fabulation van Saidiya Hartman relevant. Hartman ontwikkelde dit begrip vanuit de vraag wat je doet met levens en ervaringen die nauwelijks in historische archieven zijn vastgelegd. Sommige mensen verschijnen uitgebreid in archieven, terwijl anderen vooral worden beschreven als probleem, overtreding of statistiek. Hartman gebruikt verbeelding om zichtbaar te maken wat een archief niet kan vertellen.
Dat werpt een onverwacht licht op de rave(r).
Want wat blijft er over van een nacht die voorbij is? De rave(r) verdwijnt namelijk op het moment dat het gebeurt.
Choreomania probeert die ervaring daarom niet simpelweg na te spelen, maar opnieuw iets van haar lichamelijkheid te laten ontstaan. De performers zijn zogenoemde classically trained ravers: lichamen die zowel choreografische training als de ervaring van de dansvloer dragen. Hun expertise komt uit herhaling, uitputting, improvisatie, oogcontact en het leren lezen van de energie van anderen.
Ze representeren geen “echte raver” voor een publiek. Ze fabuleren een lichaam dat moeilijk te vangen is: technisch getraind én anti-disciplinair, gecontroleerd én ontregeld. De choreografie reconstrueert de rave niet, maar intensiveert eigenschappen die al in die lichamen aanwezig zijn.
Niemand staat op het podium
Een spotlight beweegt door de ruimte. Even wordt één persoon zichtbaar. Rond dat lichaam vormt zich een tijdelijke arena. De aandacht verschuift en de arena verdwijnt. Een nieuwe ontstaat elders.
Het licht bouwt zo geen podium. Het verplaatst het podium voortdurend.
Dit principe wordt zichtbaar in het Danceopticon. Waar een traditionele theaterspotlight een performer uit de massa haalt en de aandacht op één punt concentreert, laat Choreomania het licht door de crowd circuleren. Een danser wordt zichtbaar, anderen reageren en beweging kan zich verspreiden.

De choreografie bepaalt daardoor niet wat iedereen moet doen, maar organiseert de omstandigheden waarin iets kan gebeuren. Rave is niet vrij omdat er geen regels zijn, maar omdat diens regels mogelijkheden openen: ruimte maken, reageren, volgen en doorgeven.
De nacht choreografeert zichzelf.
Rave in the spotlights
Precies daar wordt de migratie van rave naar theater interessant.
In Room With A View van (LA)HORDE wordt rave uit diens oorspronkelijke ecologie gehaald en op een podium geplaatst. Wat op de dansvloer vloeibaar en collectief was, wordt daar zichtbaar, geordend en leesbaar. Het publiek kijkt. De performers worden bekeken.
Het theater maakt zichtbaar wat er gebeurt wanneer een praktijk die op circulatie draait, terechtkomt in een systeem van zichtbaarheid. De energie wordt geconcentreerd en vormgegeven en daardoor leesbaarder, maar verliest een deel van diens spontane circulatie. Op de dansvloer dans je met anderen; op het podium voor anderen.
De raver verandert mee.

De rave als methode
De belangrijkste vraag is daarom niet waar een rave plaatsvindt, maar wat het doet.
Ze organiseert aandacht, laat beweging circuleren, maakt tijdelijk ruimte en brengt lichamen in een toestand waarin ze elkaar voortdurend beïnvloeden. Ze creëert een vorm van collectiviteit die niet volledig vooraf kan worden vastgelegd.
In het theater wordt die methode deels een beeld; in Choreomania wordt het opnieuw infrastructuur voor participatie.
De rave blijkt zo minder een plaats dan een techniek van samen-zijn: een tijdelijke manier om een groep mensen te laten voelen dat de nacht niet vóór hen gebeurt, maar door hen. Het moment waarop één lichaam beweegt en een hele ruimte volgt, bestaat alleen zolang iedereen erin zit. Daarna is de nacht voorbij — en begint het elders opnieuw.
