Young adult fantasy literatuur leent zich voor kritische reflectie over identiteit, macht en
maatschappelijke structuren. Magie en alternatieve werelden bieden een symbolische
weergave van machtsstructuren, privilege en uitsluiting. Binnen het bestaande literatuur- en intersectionaliteitsonderzoek ontbreekt echter een intersectioneel instrument dat de
verwevenheid tussen magie en sociale machtsstructuren benadert. Deze masterproef herwerkt the wheel of power and privilege, zoals ontwikkeld door Sylvia Duckworth, om intersectionele machtsstructuren in YA-fantasy te analyseren, met specifieke aandacht voor magie. Ik demonstreer het gebruik van dit aangepaste model aan de hand van twee personages uit de boeken Shadow and Bone van Leigh Bardugo en Children of Blood and Bone van Tomi Adeyemi. Het aangepaste model biedt een systematisch en visueel denkkader dat toelaat om macht in fictieve werelden intersectioneel te analyseren en zo bijdraagt aan een verdiepend inzicht in de werking van fictieve machtssystemen.

Deze scriptie kijkt naar twee hedendaagse hervertellingen in Young Adult literatuur van de eeuwenoude mythe van de verkrachting van Persephone, namelijk de Godin Test trilogie (2011-2013) van Aimée Carter en Girl, Goddess, Queen (2023) van Bea Fitzgerald. Deze scriptie wil licht werpen op de verschillende opties die er zijn om deze oude mythe te verwerken op een manier die het verhaal nieuwe perspectieven geeft en relevant is voor een Young Adult, hedendaags publiek. Daarbij is het niet de bedoeling om uitputtend te zijn, maar om iets toe te voegen aan het onderzoek naar hervertellingen van Griekse mythen. Om een achtergrond te bieden voor verdere discussie, volgt eerst een korte introductie van de mythe en discussies over de literaire categorie Young Adult. Vervolgens wordt gekeken hoe de auteurs omgaan met welke klassieke bronnen, hoe ze bekende mythologische figuren verwerken tot personages, en hoe hun verhaalwereld en plot van invloed zijn op deze herbewerking. Omdat de mythe verbonden is met het huwelijk als overgangsritueel voor meisjes, zal ook aandacht worden besteed aan het genderaspect in deze hervertellingen. De conclusie zal vervolgens de belangrijkste verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen de twee auteurs weergeven, die een verschillende aanpak hebben in hun verwerking van het bronmateriaal vanwege hun verschillen in setting en plot.

De thesis richt zich op het ontwikkelen van een gebruikersgerichte oplossing om de winkelervaring van jongvolwassenen te verbeteren en hen aan te moedigen om zonder auto boodschappen te doen, met behulp van een gebruiksgerichte ontwerpmethode.

The question of what constitutes truth today is in debate. In particular, young people seem to have difficulties in verifying the information they encounter online. The digitization means an increasing prevalence of fake news on digital media platforms. This becomes a problem because research has shown that young people mainly consume news that they find online. Fake news raises questions concerning the extent to what young adults trust news online. With this in mind, this master’s thesis focuses on: ’What role do fake news production and dissemination have on trust in news on digital media platforms among Flemish young adults?’

In the literature review, the context is given in which fake news could occur. Understanding this media phenomenon has become more important because denoting everything as fake news can cause potential implications such as damage to the reputation of people, obscuring public debate, or influencing political decisions.

For this master’s thesis, an online quantitative survey was conducted. The attitude of 279 respondents aged between 18-34 in Flanders was measured by a multiple regression analysis. The results show that age and social media contacts play a significant role in the trust of young adults in online news.

Furthermore, the study finds significant correlations between social media features and trust in online news as well as between trust and the extent they interact with online news.

In a highly unequal society, many young Brazilians suffer oppression based on their class, race, gender, sexual orientation and religion. In the transition to adulthood, a period that is already marked by important changes, this brings along specific needs that need to be met. This research answers how ICBIE, a cultural centre in Salvador da Bahia, tries to meet those needs by providing a
space for young people to participate in activities and volunteer. Young adults from the region and volunteers of ICBIE have participated in a survey and in-depth interviews to find the answer to the central question of this thesis:
“How does volunteering at ICBIE contribute to the personal and professional development of young adults living on the Itapagipe Peninsula of Salvador, Bahia?”. Their answers, insights and stories were complemented by observations and were compared with, and analyzed through the lens of
national data and concepts from Robert Havighurst, Social Justice Theory and Anti-Oppressive Practises. The results show that young adults face a multitude of obstacles, mostly related to oppressive practises. Classism is the form of
oppression that stood out, connecting almost all of the respondents. And while ICBIE can’t directly change the root of these oppressive practises, it mitigates the harmful effects caused by them, by creating a place where volunteers can
learn, take up responsibility, open their view on the world, create meaningful bonds, feel safe and loved, and cultivate hope and resilience for the future.

This study is an initial attempt to investigate how alternative housing can contribute to a better integration of Unaccompanied Young Adult Refugees (UYAR) in Ghent. It recognizes the vulnerability of the target group and tries to meet their social, cultural and practical needs. Respondents, both stakeholders and UYAR, took part in qualitative research by participation in in-depth interviews and focus discussion. The results show that UYAR suffer from socio-cultural isolation and experience difficulty establishing an inter-ethnic network. Furthermore, they experience obstacles in their search for a house. Discrimination, high rental prices and difficulties with domicile are some of the most common problems. This study claims that alternative housing such as cohousing between UYAR and native-born Belgian student s would both solve the housing problems and the social segregation of UYAR. It will stimulate positive integration by ‘social learning’ and benefits the native students as well in finding proper housing and experience a multicultural way of living. The results suggest that a similar model would be beneficial for all stakeholders, but hard to reach because of legal and budgetary restrictions. Therefore, profound research should be set up to investigate the possibilities to adapt the legal frame. Also, a detailed financial plan is required to discover the feasibility and to adapt the plan if necessary. These recommendations are reserved for experts.
