Stimulerende schrijfsels: Creatieve schrijfinterventies om de appreciatie voor poëzie te vergroten in de derde graad doorstroomfinaliteit van het secundair onderwijs
This study investigates whether creative writing exercises can enhance the appreciation of poetry
among senior secondary students. Addressing the decline in reading appreciation and reading
comprehension, and the increased emphasis on creativity, a comprehensive lesson series of three
lessons centred on the poetry of Guido Gezelle was designed. This series incorporated both traditional
and AI-supported creative writing activities, providing a modern twist to Gezelle’s historical methods.
Using a group pretest-posttest design, the study evaluated changes in students' appreciation towards
poetry. Initial surveys revealed low interest and appreciation for poetry. Posttest results indicated a
positive shift in students' enjoyment and valuation of poetry, suggesting that creative writing exercises
can foster a greater appreciation of literary arts. However, the impact on students' future reading
habits remains uncertain, highlighting the need for further long-term studies. The study underscores
the potential of integrating creative writing into the curriculum to address the dual challenges of
declining reading interest and the need for creative skill development. Further research is needed to
explore the lasting effects on students' reading behaviours and to refine the implementation of
creative writing exercises.
