Mijn scriptie onderzoekt het model servicescapes en hoe dit een rol kan spelen in de toekomstige ontwerpen van retail design. Het eerste deel omvat de literatuurstudie. De betekenis van servicescapes, de relatie tot retail design en welke interpersoonlijke dienstverleningen er bestaan. De belangrijkste conclusie die hieruit voortkwam was dat het interpersoonlijke aspect van servicescapes relevant is voor retail design. Dit heb ik verder in detail onderzocht en hierdoor kwam ik tot een lijst van dienstensectoren die aandacht besteden aan het interpersoonlijke aspect. Finaal kwam de bankensector als meest relevante dienst, om verder te onderzoeken, naar voren. Daarop volgde het veldonderzoek startend met een online enquête om meer inzicht te verkrijgen in de wensen van de hedendaagse klant. Hieruit bleek dat er vooral in de sector 'fashion' en 'bouwmarkt' gebrek is aan interpersoonlijke service. Vervolgens heb ik casestudies van moderne banken, gelegen in Europa, geanalyseerd. Ze zijn een goed voorbeeld van de designstrategieën voor het interieurontwerp van een moderne bank. Dit onderzoek heeft zijn waarde voor retail design en heeft mij geholpen in de ontwikkeling van mijn masterproject.

This thesis explores the political imperative of public space in the Brussels Capital Region. The city-region, marked by administrative complexity and political stratification, is today also subject to a disconnect between citizens and representative democratic instances. This disaffection is exacerbated by broader political polarisation and hyper-politicization within Belgian society. Furthermore, despite discussions about a reappropriation of public space, true progress remains relative and often coincides with creeping processes of depoliticization.
Public space, however, plays a crucial role within the public sphere, which has been influentially theorised by Jürgen Habermas and Hannah Arendt. Habermas's historical analysis of the bourgeois public sphere highlights principles of accessibility, rational deliberation, and reasoned opinion-formation. This has been critiqued by Nancy Fraser for its exclusion of subaltern groups, leading to her concept of multiple counter-public spheres. Arendt in a different stance emphasises plurality as fundamental to politics, with the public sphere then being the site for action and speech.
The public sphere, although non-dismissible for forming critical public opinion and active citizenship in contemporary democracy, is today challenged by delocalisation and disembodiment. Therefore, in response to challenges to both sphere and space, the political imperative of public space proves essential to (re)consider. Public space must in this regard be seen as a relational entity with socio-physical and spatio-temporal dimensions. Characteristics such as accessibility, inclusivity, and potential for transgression are key, yet public spaces are more often dominated by patterns of e.g. securitization, privatization, and commodification.
The conceptualization of political public space in this thesis considers it as either a playground or a theatre, focusing on democratic performance of both citizens and architecture in itself. The general framework is subsequently applied to the case of the Brussels Capital Region. An analysis of XDGA’s non-realised design for the Schuman Square, a significant political and symbolic site, illustrates the potential and limitations of formal public spaces for embedding political action. In contrast, but refraining from hierarchisation, Filter Café Filtré Atelier’s OpenStreets project demonstrates the potential of informal public spaces to foster political engagement and activism around themes of common interest. The Decoratelier case study ultimately emphasizes the importance of genuine political engagement in public space, warning against superficial participation.
Addressing the political imperative of public space proves crucial for enabling citizen engagement within societal transformation. While public space alone cannot resolve polarisation, it can contribute by making abstract disagreements tangible and fostering continuous negotiation and debate. The thesis identifies key socio-physical and architectural considerations for evaluating the political imperative of public spaces, such as representation, control, and multi-publicity. The goal is to create a framework for spaces that represent both diverse publics and society, while enabling collective action and participation. After all, architects have a significant role in designing these spaces through re-engaging politics and aesthetics by treating space as an active participant in societal and political dynamics.

Deze masterproef onderzoekt de persoonskenmerken van eerste- en laatstejaarsstudenten verpleeg- en geneeskunde in Vlaanderen en de impact daarvan op interprofessionele samenwerking. Met een cross-sectioneel design werden persoonlijkheidskenmerken zoals neuroticisme, openheid en consciëntieusheid gemeten bij 659 studenten. Resultaten tonen dat verpleegkundestudenten hoger scoren op neuroticisme en lager op openheid dan geneeskundestudenten, wat invloed heeft op hun samenwerking en studiekeuze. Het onderzoek benadrukt het belang van zelfbewustzijn en persoonlijkheidskennis voor betere samenwerking in de gezondheidszorg en roept op tot meer gerichte onderwijsstrategieën om interprofessionele communicatie te verbeteren.

Obesity prejudice is pervasive, especially in sports environments (Boudreault et al., 2022;
Greenleaf et al., 2012; Thedinga et al., 2021), and negatively impacts individuals who are
overweight or obese, including under -or unemployment, unequal treatment policies.,
discrimination in health care practices, and a higher risk of self-intentional harm and suicidality. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an evaluative conditioning (EC)-based poster, grounded in the newly emerging inferential framework, designed to reduce two common stereotypical beliefs: ‘Overweight people are lazy’ and ‘Overweight people lack motivation to exercise’ (RQ1); while also assessing its effect on the evaluation of individuals who are overweight (RQ2).

The researchers hypothesized that the inferential EC-based poster in the experimental
condition would significantly reduce the stereotypical beliefs (H1a), as well as the reduction would be significantly greater in the experimental condition compared to the control condition (H1b), in which a traditional EC-based poster was presented. The inferential EC-based poster included the pairing of individuals who are overweight (i.e., unconditioned stimulus) with t-shirts displaying ‘I love/heart-symbol fitness’ (i.e., conditioned stimuli), and a slogan to clarify the relation between the pairings. Both posters were displayed in the gym setting and the outcome variables were measured using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires.

The results were mixed, providing partial support for H1a but no support for H1b. This
may be attributed to methodological issues common for research in naturalistic settings. While the intervention did not consistently reduce all targeted stereotypical beliefs or consistently show stronger effects than the traditional EC-based poster, it did significantly reduce the belief that overweight people lack motivation to exercise, with a small to moderate effect size. Furthermore, the study may have found a significant positive effect of the inferential EC-based poster on the evaluation outcome. However, this potential effect should be further examined.

This study highlights the promise of inferential EC-based posters as a potential tool for
reducing obesity prejudice and stereotypical beliefs in everyday environments such as gyms. The findings underscore the importance of further research to replicate and refine inferential EC interventions, focusing on optimizing design variations and enhancing their impact in real-world contexts.

This master's thesis researches the governance aspect of New Zealand's Te Urewera Act. It answers the following question: 'What does a commons evaluation of the Te Urewera Act demonstrate about Rights of Nature's (RoN) potential to contribute to the reinstatement of (Indigenous) commons?' The research starts with a descriptive chapter, comprising an introduction to the Te Urewera Act, its historical background, the RoN movement and the commons framework, followed by a thorough legal analysis of the Act. Then, the paper determines the way in which the Te Urewera framework can be classified as a commons. Further on, Elinor OSTROM’s eight design principles for sustainable commons institutions are applied to the legal framework, revealing continued state involvement. The paper explains this particular feature through the founding principles of international law, and their continued influence on the international legal framework. Building on these findings, the concluding chapter communicates the role of the RoN aspect in Te Urewera's governance structure and the general potential of RoN for the reinstatement of (Indigenous) commons. The research paper concludes with a call to consider RoN and commons together more often, especially in the context of international law.

This thesis focused on the employees with burnout history in Belgium to investigate their experiences of returning to work after burnout and to examine how mindfulness practices can support them during the reintegration period.

STEM-workshops ondervinden problemen op het vlak van laagdrempeligheid en het bereiken van een groot publiek. Met deze bachelorproef willen we een antwoord bieden op deze uitdaging.

Kan een online bibliotheek
voor het delen van lesmaterialen bijdragen aan het behalen van het doel van het tijdelijke Europees onderzoeksproject ‘SEAS’: de samenwerking tussen scholen en lokale gemeenschappen te vereenvoudigen om actuele duurzaamheidsvraagstukken te proberen oplossen? Deze thesis zoekt als antwoord op de onderzoeksvraag een strategie voor de nieuwe online SEAS-bibliotheek,
en baseert zich daarbij op ‘het strategisch marketingplan’ (SMP) .

Onderzoek toont aan dat rijkere jobs veel voordelen met zich meebrengen, toch zien we dat jobs van beperkte kwaliteit nog veel voorkomen. Mijn thesis beoogt te achterhalen waarom managers al dan niet gemotiveerd zijn om jobs met mogelijkheden voor autonomie te voorzien voor hun ondergeschikten. Hiervoor werd een schaal ontworpen op basis van de verwachtingstheorie en de theorie van gepland gedrag.

This research assesses the most occurring problems and challenges as well as environmental influences on an information system’s success in developing areas. It produces and applies a model based on the theories of IS Success by DeLone & McLean, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and the Integrated Model of Business Value (IGB). This model gives an answer to the need of more research in the domain of sustainability through multi-case research in developing contexts. It generates new insight on the literature, confirms and questions some existing statements and proposes new hypotheses for future research. A checklist for future IS designers or researchers was added to incorporate the most important elements found in this research. The paper concludes on the importance of the IS’ perceived usefulness, the social influences and the IS’ locality, as well as daring to think outside the box so to work with the available resources and to foster creativity.

Op welke manier kan architectuur bijdragen aan palliatieve zorg? Dat is de centrale onderzoeksvraag en rode draad door de scriptie. Het doel van deze scriptie is om verschillende parameters die gerelateerd zijn aan architectuur en die positief kunnen bijdragen aan het welbevinden van een persoon in de laatste levensfase samen te vatten uit een literatuuronderzoek, en deze vervolgens in de praktijk te toetsen aan verschillende relevante casestudies.

Deze masterproef gaat na of job crafting stimuleerbaar is via een micro-interventie. Daarnaast bekijken we het effect van job crafting op de werk-privé combinaties. Hiervoor maken we gebruik van een experimenteel design.

Online sociale netwerken hebben vaak last van veiligheids- en privacyproblemen. Door gebruikersgegevens niet op te slaan op een server, maar bij je vrienden en familie, kan Big Brother niet meer meekijken. Jammer genoeg is het maken van zo'n sociaal netwerk erg moeilijk. Deze thesis presenteert een platform om dit erg te vergemakkelijken.

In deze scriptie worden de verschillende mogelijkheden van advertising besproken met behulp van Artificiële Intelligentie.

Eerst wordt er uitgebreid uitgelegd wat AI is en hoe het werkt, door dieper in te gaan op begrippen zoals Deep Learning, algoritmen en machine learning.

Vervolgens wordt de geschiedenis van AI besproken aan de hand van mijlpalen en kan u lezen wat deskundigen en wetenschappers voorspellen voor de komende decennia.

Dan worden verschillende toepassingen van AI in advertising besproken aan de hand van voorbeelden. De niches waarover ik schrijf zijn content creation, content curation, Programmatic, Google, Facebook, DOOHapps en chatbots.

Tenslotte kan u enkele interviews lezen met professionals uit de bedrijfswereld die al reeds AI in hun bedrijf gebruiken.

Motiveert autonomie onze leerlingen? Kan je leerlingen hierin ondersteunen met de tablet? Samen met een teacher design team ben ik op zoek gegaan naar een antwoord op deze vragen. Alle leerlingen bezitten talenten en kwaliteiten die wij als leerkracht kunnen stimuleren en ondersteunen. Helaas merken we dat sommige van hen hun motivatie verliezen. Via dit project stimuleren we leerlingen om het verhaal achter een zelfgekozen actueel beeld te reconstrueren en om hun eigen leerproces te sturen.

Collective Patchwork, Patchwork of Collectivity is een architecturale strategie om een gemeenschap te activeren om aan zelfbeheerde regeneratie van hun wijk in verval te doen: El Cerro, Havana. Dit project stelt een manier voor waarop de gemeenschap positief gebruik kan maken van de huidige dynamiek en het complexe socio-culturele en politieke klimaat in Cuba. Hoe kan architectuur bijdragen om de energie, vindingrijkheid en ondernemersgeest van de Cubanen te benutten als kracht om evolutie en levendigheid in hun buurt op te wekken?

Deze scriptie omvat een onderzoek naar het verbinden van technische kunststoffen met lasertechnologie. Aan de hand van statistische modellen is gezocht naar de optimale parameters voor het verbindingsproces.

Het natuurgebied Blaasveldbroek nabij Mechelen bevat een bezoekerscentrum en een blokhut. Deze worden onderzocht om te worden tot 'de groene poort' van morgen. Belangrijk is de beleving van het landschap tussen de stad Mechelen en de Dijle-Zennevallei, dit aan de hand van originele ruimtes, diensten en producten.

Sandwich panels show excellent possibilities towards low-energy building solutions. Although, regarding the application of sandwich panels for outdoor applications, a durable performance is required. This work investigates the mechanical performance of textile reinforced cementitious composites (TRC) with an alkali resistant glass textile when exposed to durability cycles, namely 100 freeze-thaw cycles, 50 heat-rain cycles and combination of both. The characterization of the tensile behaviour was done by means of non-destructive and uniaxial tensile test. The loss in mechanical performance of the aged specimens seems to be governed by the physical damage attributed to durability loading. Further investigation on the micro-scale processes will be of interesting use to entirely understand the degradation processes. Knowledge and quantification of this loss is essential for the design of sandwich panels for renovation purposes

De tijd is gekomen om terug te keren naar onze natuur. We gaan steeds meer toe naar een resultaat gedreven economie. Op kantoor wordt je voortdurend op de schouders getikt door een van je collega’s en in een koffiebar ben je ook meer bezig met je omgeving dan met je werk. We missen een plek waar we rustig kunnen werken en brainstormen, een plek waar je je volledig kan focussen op je eigen werk.

Een onderzoek naar de relatie tussen architectuur en melancholie. Vertrekkend vanuit andere kunstvormen om te zien hoe men daar mee omging. Het eindresultaat resulteerde in hoe ik kon omgaan met mijn eigen melancholie en daarmee aan de slag kon gaan.

Nowadays, performing multitasking activities on the move has become more and more popular. Such propensity has increasingly attracted lots of attentions from scholars. In this streamline, the thesis is to explore how multitasking activities are performed in different modes of public transport (PT) in Brussels city, and whether they are affected by the demographics, distance and level of crowdedness factors. In addition, it looks into the way and how PT passengers interact with their information and communication technology (ICT) devices. Structured observation is used to conduct the survey of 1216 PT passengers (on bus, tram and metro) in May 2016. The result shows, on the one hand, that the length of the journey and demographics have significant impact on passengers’ decision to multitask. On the other hand, it proves that the frequency of using ICTs not only being influenced by demographics, but its relationship with the transport types is also moderated by crowdedness level. On top of that, a comparison with a previous study which adopted a different methodology but in the same context is conducted both to confirm the reliability and validity of this paper and to give an insight about Brussels public transport and its users’ multitasking tendency.

Tijdens deze scriptie werd een procedure ontwikkeld om snel en eenvoudig proteïnen met lineaire herhalingen te verlengen of verkorten. Deze procedure laat toe om meerdere energetisch geoptimaliseerde sequenties te bekomen.

Iedereen zucht wel eens. Voor de meeste mensen is dit zo een normaal deel van de ademhaling dat er niet over nagedacht wordt. We weten al dat zuchten een resetter functie heeft voor de ademhaling. Maar toch gaan mensen soms op vreemde momenten zuchten. Kan men leren zuchten?

Beschrijving en uitwerking van verschillende technologieën voor het ontwikkelen van een modulaire backend en deze gerechtvaardigd aan de hand van vergelijkingen. Gebruikte technologieën zijn het Entity Framework Code First, het Repository Pattern en Dependency Injection aan de hand van Autofac. Er wordt vertrokken vanuit de basisprincipes van het domain driven design.

Gebruik van cellenliggers: safety scanWellington Place, Leeds, Verenigd Koninkrijk. De site waarop vroeger het Leeds Central Station gevestigd was, wordt omgebouwd tot een prestigieuze trekpleister met talloze horeca- en handelszaken en bijhorende woon- en parkingfaciliteiten. Dit tot 2016 lopend project is één van de vele recente constructies waarbij er geopteerd wordt om cellulaire staven - de klassieke stalen I-profielen met cirkelvormige openingen in de lijfplaat – te gebruiken.Economisch materiaalgebruik, maar wat is het effect van deze openingen op het bezwijkgedrag van de liggers?

Er is geen unaniem akkoord over de kwestie en dat zorgt voor knelpunten. Sommige landen zetten zware grenscontroles in, ondanks het Shengen-akkoord van 1993 dat vrij verkeer van personen in Europa toelaat.
