Image, Archive, and Erasure: Visual Strategies of Italian Identity from Fascism to the Present.
This thesis investigates how photographic and archival practices have shaped the construction of Italian national identity from unification to the present, exposing the continuities between colonial, fascist, and post-fascist visual regimes. Through the case study of Leone Jacovacci — an Italian-Congolese boxer whose 1928 victory was erased from public record — the research examines how archives function as instruments of power that define visibility and belonging. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Achille Mbembe, Ariella Azoulay, and Saidiya Hartman, it argues that absence within the archive is never neutral but a form of epistemic violence that structures collective memory.

By tracing the evolution of Italian image culture — from Lombroso’s pseudo-scientific photography to Mussolini’s propagandistic iconography and contemporary media — the study reveals how the aesthetic foundations of whiteness and exclusion persist beneath post-war and neoliberal narratives of modernity. Engaging both institutional and personal archives, the project proposes an alternative methodology grounded in solidarity and speculation: one that re-reads the archive not as a closed repository, but as a site of struggle and potential reactivation. Ultimately, it calls for a re-imagining of visual history as an ethical and political practice, where to look is also to take responsibility for what has been made invisible.

Dit onderwijsonderzoek situeert zich op de Toren van Babel in Gent, een school uitsluitend voor
anderstalige leerlingen. Uit de literatuur blijkt dat het leesniveau in Vlaanderen sterk daalt en dat
anderstalige leerlingen een steeds groter deel van de groep laagpresteerders representeren (De
Meyer et al., 2023). Recente literatuur ziet een significant verband tussen leesmotivatie en
leesvaardigheid, waardoor leesmotivatie een belangrijke factor is om op in te spelen als school (Toste
et al., 2020). Uit onderzoek van Gobyn et al. (2019) vloeien drie factoren voort die impact hebben op
leesmotivatie: autonomie, belonging en competentie. Het onderdeel belonging verdient hier
specifieke aandacht, aangezien verschillende studies ook uitwijzen dat school belonging, beïnvloed
door het diversiteitsbeleid van de school, een grote impact heeft op de prestaties van leerlingen met
een migratieachtergrond. Dit onderzoek wil de leesmotivatie van de taalbadleerlingen in kaart
brengen, achterhalen waarom ze (niet) gemotiveerd zijn om te lezen en vervolgens een aanzet geven
tot een leesbeleid dat rekening houdt met bovengenoemde factoren. De dataverzameling gebeurt
aan de hand van een vragenlijst, afgenomen bij alle 28 leerlingen uit het eerste jaar B-stroom, en 6
diepte-interviews met leerlingen die ook deelnamen aan de vragenlijst. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat de
meeste leerlingen een combinatie vertonen van autonome en gecontroleerde leesmotivatie. De
invloed van de school op leesmotivatie komt ook sterk naar voor. De vergaarde informatie en
inzichten in waarom leerlingen (niet) graag lezen zal gebruikt worden als startpunt om het leesbeleid
van de school vorm te geven.

Continued mobility has spawned a renewal of interest in the saliency of borders, opposing strengthened border securitisation to a borderless and globalised world. Current representations of the modern sovereign territorial nation-state and reification of territorial borders are increasingly contested, argued to be inconsistent with the construction and delineation of borders and boundaries in non-territorial terms.

Drawing on a micro-analysis of borders and boundaries, the purpose of this thesis is to uncover a ‘thick description’ of the ways in which South Sudanese refugees navigate borders during their mobility trajectories across the borderland between Uganda and South Sudan. Following refugees’ mobility trajectories, this thesis further aims to explore the threefold relation between subjective perceptions of borders and boundaries, the circumscription of communities of belonging, and evolving identity narratives. The particular borderland between Uganda and South Sudan, used as case study for this thesis, is characterised by a range of dynamic cross-border interactions and relations between both sides of the international border. While borders can divide sub-ethnic and/or linguistic communities, borderlands also lead to the creation of new and complex identities, often interrelated through linguistic, tribal, and cultural ties, as the findings of this research have indicated.

Based on semi-structured interviews conducted in different refugee settlements in northern Uganda, the results highlight a multidimensional perception of borders among refugees: both in a literal and symbolic sense. Although a deep sense of longing for South Sudan, and subsequent national identification, remains, refugees have demonstrated differing nationalistic, tribal, and linguistic identifications. As identification is not a linear process, affected by the evolution of time and space, refugees have demonstrated a multi- layered and interrelated process of nationalistic, tribal, and linguistic identification, grounded across multiple locations at once. By rethinking the logic of borders beyond their territorial materialisation, and by including a symbolic dimension (referring to cross-border tribal and linguistic boundaries), this thesis illustrates the diversity and complexity underlying refugee’s sense of belonging and interrelated identity narratives, subjected to continuous processes of identity negotiations.

Deze masterproef is tot stand gekomen binnen de opleiding Interieurarchitectuur aan de KU Leuven, met als thema ‘The Bright Side of the Moon’. Deze publicatie biedt een inkijk in het ontwerpend onderzoek voor de masterproef ‘rituele passage’. Het onderwerp werpt een kritische en deconstructivistische blik op de transitie die plaatsvindt bij nabestaanden. Het onderzoek is voortgekomen uit persoonlijke ervaringen met plotseling verlies en het herbestemmen van ‘toegangbare plekken’ in zowel kerkgebouwen als publieke ruimtes. Als toekomstig interieurarchitect streef ik ernaar om telkens het persoonlijke, zowel van mezelf als van mijn omgeving, te integreren in het ontwerp, waardoor het begrip ‘interieur’ zich ontwikkelt tot een breder concept zonder grenzen.
Ik wil graag mijn dank uitspreken aan mijn begeleidende docenten, Tom Callebaut, Ignaas Back, Hilde Bouchez en Klaas Vanslembrouck, voor hun waardevolle begeleiding, kritische inzichten en motivatie tijdens het proces. De scriptie onderzoekt op welke manier een huisdier kan bijdragen aan het sociaal-emotioneel welbevinden van kinderen in een klas. Zowel de behoeften aan 'belonging', competentie en autonomie, beter gekend als de ABC-behoeften uit de zelfdeterminatietherie worden dankzij een klashond vervuld. Heel wat praktijkvoorbeelden staven dit onderzoek.

Following the considerable attention of activity-based models in transportation planning and forecasting, and the necessity to understand and reveal the impacts of transportation policies, this paper aims to simulate and examine a population policy scenario. It explicitly uses FEATHERS, a demand-side activity-based model, operational for Flanders, Belgium. The ABM is required to estimate how the interzonal migration of Flanders’ population from small towns/villages to large, urbanized city areas will closely affect the daily activity-travel choices of the individuals. A current baseline scenario is executed alongside three migration scenarios that account for a spatial redistribution of the population (2%, 5%, 10%) with equal proportions. Results suggest an impact on mode choice during peak hours, with a significant shift from car as a driver to public transport. Besides mode choice, there is a considerable decrease in the total number of trips. As a result, the total vehicle kilometres travelled, and total vehicle hours travelled reduce remarkably. While on the contrary there is hardly any effect on the activity choice.

Onderzoek toont aan dat rijkere jobs veel voordelen met zich meebrengen, toch zien we dat jobs van beperkte kwaliteit nog veel voorkomen. Mijn thesis beoogt te achterhalen waarom managers al dan niet gemotiveerd zijn om jobs met mogelijkheden voor autonomie te voorzien voor hun ondergeschikten. Hiervoor werd een schaal ontworpen op basis van de verwachtingstheorie en de theorie van gepland gedrag.

Belonging als universeel ontwerp: het fundament voor een diverse school

Een documentaire over de jongerencultuur in Maasmechelen waarin kinderen van migranten een samenhorigheid en inclusiviteit hebben gevonden van de Belgische samenleving die hen uitsluit omdat ze 'anders' zijn.

Om mijn driejarige opleiding, bachelor in de orthopedagogie, af te ronden schreef ik mijn bachelorproef over het toepassen van ‘The Circle Of Courage’ door opvoeders/begeleiders van jongeren, tussen 12 en 21 jaar met een lichte tot matige verstandelijke beperking en gedrags – en emotionele stoornissen, in de dagelijkse werking van een leefgroep en die zijn doelgroep.

 Migration has a long history since the birth of humanity. The largest movements of people in history were the barbarian migrations that overran the Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries AD and the Atlantic Migration to the Americas from the early 1800s to the early decades of the 20th century. For a thousand years, from the end of the Roman Empire in the West until the middle of the 15th century, the history of Europe, Asia, and North Africa consists of an almost unbroken series of invasions, wars, and conquests.
